Work Text:
I had just met Sata Kyoya this year. He was your typical 'prince', good looks, good grades, and a great personality. He was overly considerate and kind, the type of guy to help an elderly person across the street. (Or at least that's how he came across) That's why it didn't come as a shock when most of the girls on campus had a crush on him. Even girls off campus liked him, at lunch there would be tons of girls who would head over to our university just to see him. Not that he ever paid attention to any of them.
"Maybe he's gay?" Yuki said, as we watched him reject another girl from behind the school wall. We didn't make a point of stalking others, but we couldn't help our curiosity. Especially when Toru, the pretties girl on campus was involved. We had to watch.
"Shh, I cant hear with you talking."
"I am really flattered" He starts, his charming smile plastered onto his face. "But I'm sorry, I don't have a phone." His smile changing to look slightly sympathetic, it was fake though. You wouldn't be able to tell if you didn't know him, lucky for me I did. Well enough to know this 'prince' act was a lie. Other than that I don't know him that well, he kept to himself. The only reason we became friends is because Yuki and I would pester him all the time. Eventually his mask dropped and we saw the real Sata Kyoya. Let me tall you, the guy had a horrible personality. I was positive that even if he did get a girlfriend, she would be able to handle him, I don't think he could do relationships.
"Liar." Yuki whispers, even though Kyoya wasn't in earshot. Toru looked dejected as she left, I felt bad for her. She had to get all that courage to confess, and doesn't even get a proper rejection.
"I can see you." Sata comments once Toru was gone. Yuki and I exchanged a look, as if asking each other if he meant us. "Yes you two idiots."
"Shit." We both say as we walk towards him. We were almost completely sure he couldn't see us, we should have known better though. Kyoya was almost always aware of his surroundings. It was like he was use to people stalking him, the struggles that come with popularity.
"You didn't have to lie to her." I said, slightly upset at his response to her confession. As someone who has confessed before I could sympathies with Toru. It wasn't just that, I hated lies. People who lie are the lowest. Honesty is the most important thing, if you weren't honest there was no reason to trust you ever. I understood why he lied, to spare her feelings and to get out of a tight spot but he should have been honest.
"When did I lie?"
"Dude, the phone." Yuki comments, more teasing than anything. He found Kyoya's disinterest in girls amusing, not really caring about his treatment towards them. I guess he idolized him because he could treat them like that, not that either of them were bad people. Sure I didn't always agree with their moral code and their personalities could use work but they had great qualities despite all that. I mean I would never be friends with them if I thought they were horrible.
"It was easier than telling her I didn't want to give it to her, girls are so relentless." He said, a smirk resting on his face. That was something about him that infuriated me. He always wore this cocky over confident smirk, as if he knew something you didn't.
"I-" I got cut off by an obnoxious ring tone. It was an overall peppy pop song, something my sister would listen to. It as even more shocking to see Sata pull out his phone, since he always complained about this kind of music.
"Speak of the devil" He mumbled under his breath, barley above a whisper. "Sorry I have to answer this." He sighed, although a small smile threatened to over take his face. He answered the phone and almost immediately we could hear someone talking. It wasn't loud enough to make anything out. "Okay." He paused, a real smile placed onto his face. He seemed genuinely happy to be talking to whoever was on the other end of the call. "I said okay didn't I?"
"Who do you think it is?" Yuki whispered to me.
"No idea."
"I'm not the one who forgets things. If I said I would go, I will go." He sighs, sounding exhausted already. So maybe I jumped the gun, he might not be fond of the person on the other end. "Bye" The other end said something that made him look even more displease. "Yeah, you too." The other started talking but got cut off as he ended the call.
"Who was that?" I asked, beating Yuki to the question.
"Erika"
"Wait, wait hold on a second you gave a girl your number?" He looked confused for a second before laughing. You see Toru wasn't the first girl Kyoya had refused to give his number too. In fact every girl who ask he would reject, even if it was for a school project.
"Yeah, I didn't have much of a choice." Kyoya grimaced, shoving his phone into his pant pocket.
"God Mr. Popular much." Yuki dramatically sang out, draping his arm across Kyoya and my shoulder. "Anyways, Sata my love I really need your help with todays lab."
"No" Kyoya said, pushing Yuki's arm off. "Do your own work."
"Stingy"
I found Yuki and Kyoya sitting down at one of the free library tables. Kyoya was wearing glasses, that would have looked ridiculous on anyone else. They were thick red framed glasses, with a slightly blue tinge to the lenses. Of course on Kyoya they looked great, man I hated him sometimes.
"Yo!" Yuki called out when he saw me, waving me down to sit with the two of them.
"How was class?"
"Ugh, dude Chem should be a human rights violation. Like seriously who has time to memorize all the formulas and equations. I signed up to do experiments not math."
"Sounds rough"
"Right! See you get me, Sata here is a natural genius."
"Its crazy what having braincells can do." Kyoya chirped up, still writing notes down.
The three of us worked on homework together, only occasionally chatting. Believe it or not Yuki and I weren't stupid, I mean we got into this university after all. I actually scored higher than Kyoya on our last exam.
Kyoya got up leaving to go to the washroom.
"Sometimes I forget that man in human." Yuki laughs.
"mmm" That's when I notice the phone on the table buzz loudly and light up. "Is that yours?" I ask gesturing to the phone.
"Nope, must be Sata's" Yuki said, looking down at the phone.
"Dude you shouldn't read his texts."
"Its fine, come on I bet you're curious too." He said, not touching the phone. "Besides it on the table face up its just asking to be read." Another loud ding sounded. His eyes widened while looking at the phone. "Oh damn." He whispers.
"What?"
"I thought we shouldn't read his texts." Yuki comments, pursing his lips to hide his smile.
"Slide it to me." Yuki slides over the phone, the home screen lights up.
Dog
I really miss you
Oh I saw a dog that looked like lime!
San-chan's hair is super long now, you should see.
I got a new dress.
Should I cut my hair?
I miss you 💕
"Dude." I look back at Yuki.
"I know."
"What do you know?" A familiar voice asks from behind me.
"Oh Sata, its been a while how are you?" Yuki asks, a great cover really. Sata might not have thought anything was up.
"What are you two doing?"
"You got a text and we were just seeing if it was important, I was gonna run it over."
"It was just on the table we couldn't help but see it." Yuki says at the same time. Great.
"Yeah?" He sticks out his hand waiting for his phone. He looks at it quickly reading the message before putting it into his pocket without a response.
"Who was that?" Yuki bravely asks. "Why are they called dog?"
"Is that any of your business?" He asked, his red eyes becoming more intense. Ill give it to him, the man looked intimidating.
"No."
"Don't look at my phone, got it."
"Yep, yes sir, absolutely never again."
"Wait Sata aren't you being a bit unfair. I mean you did leave it on the table. It wasn't like we unlocked it, it popped up on the home screen." I defended.
"So?" He crossed his arms, glaring more intensely.
"I'm just saying don't be so mean."
"It's fine" Yuki said, straining his voice. He was trying to get me to back down as to not make it into a bigger deal. Unlucky for him I wasn't one to back down.
"Whatever"
"Anyways, it looked like you should probably answer it." I tried, the atmosphere was awkward. It wasn't the first time me and Kyoya had bumped heads. We were both very strong willed people who didn't enjoy being wrong.
"Dude" Yuki said, giving me a weird look. Despite his intrusive personality, and lack of a filter, he was the first to drop a topic if he felt someone was uncomfortable. I wouldn't push the topic if I thought it would upset Kyoya or even make him uncomfortable. This time it was half a pride thing since I felt Kyoya's reaction was a bit uncalled for. Sure we looked at his phone, but we didn't open it or do anything invasive.
"Its fine, I just called her."
"Her?" Yuki asks no longer trying to avoid the topic.
"Well I'm not gay." Yuki slides over ten dollars to me. "I hate you guys."
"Wait unimportant, you have a girlfriend?" I asked, well more yelled.
"Keep it down, next time I'm kicking you out." The librarian warned.
"You have a girlfriend?" I whispered back.
"I do."
"Can we see her?"
"No."
"Stingy man!"
I had been a month since Sata had told us about his girlfriend and Yuki and I were trying our best to find out more about her. The only thing we were fairly sure about was that she did not go to school here. Which meant they were long distance, that made getting to know more about her hard.
"We should all go somewhere this week, since we have it off." Yuki said as energetic as ever.
"Sata will probably be with his girlfriend."
"Right" He exclaimed as if he forgot about her. "Ten bucks she's a model." Yuki said as we sat down at the café. We had just finished out last class of the day and decided to meet up at our favorite café.
"Then why wont he show us pictures, I mean wouldn't you brag about that?" Yuki clicked his tongue.
"A normal person yes, but this is Sata. He is so private plus I bet he has that whole possessive personality type." I hummed in agreeance. Sata was the possessive type.
"Do you think he acts all sweet around her, like a prince?"
"I cant see any girl who would put up with his real personality for long."
"True, speaking of which how long have they been together?"
"Over a year, that's my bet."
"We should call him over and force it out of him." Yuki said, pulling out his phone and calling him. "You done with class? Great! We are at the café see you." He hung up without giving him
"You didn't give him the chance to talk." I wheezed.
"If I did he would have said no."
It was about ten minutes later that Sata showed up. As soon as he walked in all eyes went to him, it was as if a celebrity had walked into the café. Yuki and I both rolled our eyes as the girls in the next table whispered about him being a prince.
"Why was I called out here?"
"We wanted to hang with our best friend, obviously."
"Right" He sarcastically replied.
"We were talking about our plans for this week since we have it off, are you going anywhere with you're girlfriend?"
"Yeah she wants me to visit."
"That's fun, where is she?"
"Why are you so curious?" Sata asked, lifting up his eyebrow.
"We are just interested in your life. You know as friends do."
"Who said we were friends?"
"Wow, that hurts" Yuki said clutching his chest.
"Cuts deep man." I played along, if I hadn't known Sata I would have been hurt by his words or at least ticked enough to avoid him. I didn't have time to hang with people who didn't like me, but I knew Sata and I knew he had a roundabout way of talking to people, and how he liked to keep everyone at arms length.
It was a normal Friday night, I was studying in my dorm for the chemistry test we had tomorrow. When my phone started buzzing relentlessly. I already knew it was Yuki from how fast the texts came in.
Yuki added you have been added to a group chat with three others
Yuki, Reki & 2 others

Yuki changed the group chat to
Operation meet Erika
you are all so going down
That marked the start of the most chaotic month of our lives.
Reki, Sata's roommate, had the biggest advantage. Since most of the time he could hear a brief bit of their phone calls, at least from Sata's end. Of course Sata started to catch on and took his calls somewhere else. Reki did manage to find out Erika was the same age, and was studying something to do with art.
Yuki took a different approach, internet stalking. Which was a complete bust when he found out the only form of social media Sata had was texting. Someone on campus had made a fan account for him that Yuki had searched for hours looking for an the Erika out of the twenty that followed him. 'This could be her?' He said showing a bright eyes girl with long blonde hair and a perfect figure. Of course when he asked Sata all he got was a smirk, which didn't seem to prove anything. A week later the girl posted a picture with her boyfriend and crushed Yuki's hope.
"Maybe he lied, I mean are we sure he has a girlfriend?" Reki asked as we walked out of Calculus 2 together.
"No way, he does call her everyday." Yuki interjected, joining us as we walked outside of the university.
"Maybe its his sister?" He had talked about his older sister quite a bit, although never fondly. I couldn't imagine him calling her everyday out of his own free will.
"No way, he wouldn't make this up." Yuki said but didn't sound convinced "Would he?"
"You three what's going on?" A familiar voice asks from behind us.
"Hmm?"
"You have all been acting strange. spill." He said, crossing his arms and glaring down at us.
"Nothing" Reki and I both said, before he turned his gaze to Yuki.
"We were just talking about your girlfriend, they don't think she is real."
"Well unlike someone, I don't pretend to date." He said, obviously a jab to one of us. I wasn't sure who though since none of us had claimed to have a girlfriend unless it was something only Sata and them knew about.
It was later that day that Reki had dragged Yuki and I out of our dorm and towards his.
"What's going on?"
"Shh" he said, motioning for us to come closer but be quite. Creeping up to his door. "Sata is on a skype call with his girlfriend." She whispered.
"Open up then."
"Wait guys I don't know, they don't get to talk a lot we wouldn't want to ruin it for them."
"Oh shut up, like you don't want to see her." Yuki said, which wasn't completely wrong. The more it was kept a secret the more I wanted to know why, I mean why not show her off? Still it didn't feel right... It was too late to voice my opinion because Reki opened the door and there was Sata turning back and glaring at us.
"What are you doing here?" He asked, watching us walk into the room.
"Just visiting" Yuki smiled, moving to look at his screen. The screen was completely black except for the 'call ended' scrolled across. "Damn"
This went on for weeks, every time failing miserably.
It had been a month and a bit since we started the bet, and it had gone no where.
We had almost completely given up on ever meeting Sata's girlfriend when out of the blue Sata texts us.
The boys😎
Hey, Erika keeps bugging me to meet you guys.
No way! We get to meet the girlfriend!
Yeah I would totally be down, when?
She is coming down this weekend.

Yeah but they haven't seen each other in person for months
True dat
20 she a model
No way
Finally the awaited day had arrived, we would get to meet Erika. Yuki and I had arrived at the café half an hour early, both excited to meet the famous Erica. Sata had arrived right ion the dot joining us at the table alone.
"Where is your girlfriend man?" Yuki asked bravely.
"Late." He muttered glaring, obviously mad at her tardiness. It was ten minutes later that a brunette girl rushed into the café, her hair disheveled. Normally I wouldn't have looked twice at such an average girl, it wasn't that she was ugly, she was just plain. The definition of ordinary brown hair and brown eyes like every other girl in Japan. It wasn't until I saw the way Sata looked at her that I made the connection.
I had never seen such a fond look on his face before, he looked at her like she was the world. Though when their eyes met his face went back to stoic as she walked over.
"I'm so so so sorry, I got lost, I had no idea how big it is here." She apologized bowing to the table before looking at Sata waiting for him to say something, he didn't. "I'm Erica by the way, its nice to meet you."
"Its nice to meet you Erica I'm Yuki, I've heard a lot about you."
"Good things I hope, although knowing Sata...." she trailed off not finishing her thought, although we both understood what she meant.
"No this man wouldn't tell us anything about you, so you get to fill us in."
Erica lit up and started ranting about her apprenticeship in glass blowing. Her rant slowly turned into how she met Sata and their relationship, to her friends at school and her favorite foods. She asked a few questions and would excitedly join in when she heard anything either of us had in common. Sata would interject a few times but mostly just listened, he even looked mildly happy, which for Sata was a rare sight.
"Actually Sata talks about you guys a lot, he really likes you. Although knowing him he probably doesn't say it a lot."
"Erica." Sata said warningly although she didnt seem to really care.
"No he doesn't."
"He is so mean to us." Yuki said, in a flirty tone, that Erica didn't catch, but Sata did. He didn't comment he just glared.
"I know right, he has such a bad personality." Erica agreed nodding along. "So thank you for being friends with him."
By the end of the meeting I could understand what Sata saw in Erica she was a sweet girl with a bubbly personality and it was obvious she was madly in love with her boyfriend and cared about him a lot. At first glance you would think Erica was wrapped tightly around the claws of her sadistic boyfriends, but knowing Sata and seeing the way he looked at her it might just be the opposite.
The most surprising thing about this visit was Sata, he seemed to be in love with Erica. For someone who didn't talk about his girlfriend and talked sweetly to other girls, he didn't seem like the type to fall this deep. This was a new side to Sata that made me view him in another light, Sata Kyoya always seemed to be changing in front of me. At one point he was a prince, perfect and kind. To a devil, with a cold hear and fake persona, to a friend, to a loyal boyfriend who seemed wrapped around Erica's finger.
Yuki and I came to the same conclusion when they both left, Sata definitely didn't seem like the type.
