Work Text:
We were just two kids in the backseat, falling in love.
We moved so fast, but was it fast enough?
The world spins ‘round till we fall on the ground, but I promise we’ll last
I won’t let us crash.
The music filtered in softly from the front of the car, soft piano accompanying the singer, and Enji sung along under his breath while Rei focused her gaze on the brightening sky above them through the sunroof. White hair was painted in pinks and oranges as the sun rose over the world. Rei had always wanted to watch the sun rise over the city. The world was quiet still.
Rei was the light that crept into everyone’s lives, like the dawn after a thunderstorm, Enji mused. Something everyone longed for, something beautiful, something easily missed or glossed over. Something people never realized the true preciousness of until it was too late. Something powerful and strong.
Enji had always been a morning person, though.
Maybe that’s why he felt so at home with Rei. Maybe that’s why when he looked into her eyes, all he could see was a future with her. It was terrifying, feeling something so strong when they were both so young, but maybe this is what love was like.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked softly, voice shaking in the surrounding silence, hand cupped to her jaw, glancing down her neck to rest on her shoulder. He was blushing, he knew it, but she was too. “R-Rei, can I… can I kiss you?”
“I…” Rei turned her head, eyes wide, caught off guard by the question. “Enji, I…”
“Yes?” he asked quickly, breath hitching in his throat as he awaited Rei’s answer.
“Are you sure we should be doing this?” Rei whispered softly, one hand reaching out to wrap tightly around Enji’s. “Your parents would lose it if they found out about us.”
“I don’t care what they think, Rei,” Enji promised, squeezing her hand gently. “Besides, not letting people date because of class differences is something in the past.”
Rei giggled softly, bringing her free hand up to brush the bangs from her eyes, pink tinting her cheeks more fully as she nodded, shifting in the backseat to lean closer to Enji. “Kiss me, please, Enji?”
Enji’s heart stuttered to a stop in his chest as he nodded, leaning forward to meet her. Dry lips, chewed through from nerves pressed together and they stayed like that for a moment, holding their breath as they kept their lips firmly together, neither one moving until Rei gasped out, moving away as an awkward laugh bubbled from her throat.
“That wasn’t very good, was it?” she asked, brushing her bangs away again, blush reaching to the tips of her ears. “I-I’ve never done that before!”
Rei fell into another fit of giggles, and Enji was right there with her. No, the kiss hadn’t been very good, but considering it was the first kiss either of them had shared was probably the reason, and it’s not like Enji had been any better.
They caught their breath, and Enji tucked loose strands of hair behind Rei’s hair, palm of his hand coming to rest against her cheek and then they were leaning into each other again, pressing their lips together again, teeth clashing together as neither could stop smiling. Rei pulled back quickly, tongue darting out over her lips before her face fell more serious. Slowly, she leaned forward again and Enji felt his face drop, lips closed for the next kiss. It was more comfortable like this, with Rei’s lips wet against his. He tilted his head against hers, pressing closer and the slide was good. Rei’s breath hitched through her nose as she mimicked the action. He could feel her lashes fluttering against his cheek, almost missing the sensation as his heart pounded hard and fast in his chest.
Rei pulled away slowly this time, forehead resting against his. “Can I kiss you again, Enji?”
