What was supposed to be a casual Saturday evening with your son at Wayne Manor quickly devolved with one declarative sentence from Jason’s mouth after several hours of the family actually existing peacefully together for a change.
“By the way, B, we keep forgetting to mention it, but we’re engaged.”
You froze where you had been looking over Damian’s sketchbooks with him on the couch.
“About time,” the boy scoffed.
“Damian,” you muttered chidingly, rolling your eyes.
“What? It’s true. You’ve been together longer than I’ve been alive.”
“Jason had to be sure Gotham wouldn’t run you off,” Tim teased. “But congrats.”
“Thanks,” you smiled at him. Your gaze shifted back to Bruce, the smile falling once you saw the way the man was studying you.
A frown tugged at his lips as he turned back to his second son. “Are you sure this is a smart decision? Especially given that she’s hiding from Ra’s?”
“Well, I’m not in hiding, so–”
“You should have asked my opinion on the matter before proposing,” he steamrolled right through your objection.
Your eyebrow quirked up, jaw clenching in mild irritation. Somehow, you doubted you would ever get used to how controlling the Bat-family patriarch was. Still, that didn’t stop the bubble of indignant chatter from rising up out of your mouth. “Well, I didn’t realize I needed his Dad’s blessing since he’s a grown ass man, but I’ll keep that in mind for next time.”
“Wait, are you saying that you’re the one that asked for marriage?”
You couldn’t prevent the smirk that tugged at your mouth at his baffled tone. It was a look, you were amused to note, that was mirrored on your son’s face. “What gave you that idea, Brucie?”
A little bit of his soul seemed to leave his body based off the blank-eyed stare he leveled you with in response.
You just shrugged. “Got tired of waiting for him to do it.”
He sighed heavily. “Just … Give me your word that you’ll be cautious. It would be dangerous–”
“If our enemies thought getting married somehow made us worry about each other more? We’ve been together for years; a label swap isn’t going to change how much we already care about each other. You know that, right?”
“She has a point,” Damian chimed in. “They’re already so all over each other that every criminal in the city knows they’re head over heels. Besides,” his tone shifted to one of haughty pride, “as if any of them stand a chance against Mama.”
You grinned as you pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Thank you, Habibi.”
Bruce was pinching the bridge of his nose when you looked back up at him. “Just be careful.” There was a pause. “Please.” You could read the silent plea in his eyes. Please take care of yourselves because I can’t lose Jason again.
That was a concession you could make. “Of course,” you agreed to that unsaid request. Another pause as you let the heavy atmosphere lift. “So since we’re on the subject, is this the part where I ask you to walk me down the aisle?”
