Work Text:

Gema and Macy met in middle school, and have been in the same classes even up into high school, until Gena had to leave… but Gena transferred to Twitter High School later into that school year, and they met each other again. And it was quite obvious that the two were not going to get along. At first, they seemed like they could cohabitate. But, it became increasingly obvious that that reality was becoming no more.

Small bickerings turned to loud shouting matches. Small mishaps turned into giant, childish battles. It was insane, really. People would look on in shock, not knowing how to stop this. Teachers tried to step in, but their actions would make the two girls just… angrier. They just really hated each other’s presence.

Macy soon transferred out, not wanting to deal with Gena anymore. Gena was very happy with this, believing she could… well, rejoice. Her enemy was gone!

But, as she entered college, she found that things would never be “normal” again.

Somehow, they keep running into each other. Somehow… They keep winding up near each other. It pisses each other off. And now here they are, sitting in the same damn dorm.

Macy is absolutely thriving, and Gema is no different. Macy has grown more confident and strong, and Gema is still growing into her shoes. But, the two never lost their fire for arguing. But, the question was, if they hated each other so much, why did they not request different dorms?

“You’re so fucking annoying…” Gema huffed, sitting on her bed, laptop on her lap.

“Oh shut it, all I was doing was laughing,” Macy retorted with an eye roll, on her own bed across the small room; she was on her phone, scrolling through her respective apps.

“Yeah, and your voice is annoying as hell,” Gema said, crossing her arms. Great, now she can’t even do homework, or play whatever game she wanted to play at the moment- Genshin was it? Probably.

Macy sighed and dropped her phone, throwing her head back with an exasperated sigh. “And you just like the sound of your own,” she spat right back. Both girls, who were once just relaxing, had gotten right back to snapping in a matter of seconds. They argued nearly every time they spoke, and it was a miracle that they hadn’t strangled each other already.

Gema glared, and slammed her laptop shut, “whatever, I’m going out.” She announced, standing up.

“Go ahead, I wouldn’t dream of stopping you,” Macy said, glaring right back at her.

Gema wanted to say something back, but she didn't. She just bit her cheek, kept her glare up, and walked right out. She made sure to slam the door behind her, as if to signify her true anger. Macy wasn't affected, as usual. She just stared at the door with a risen eyebrow, before shaking her head with a tired sigh.

This really was getting old, but both girls couldn't help but yell and get angry at one another. What else were they going to do? They don't know really anything else about each other... now do they?

Gema went to go stay with a friend in another dorm room. She knocked, and was let in quick. "Hey Amy," she said with a sigh as she stepped in.

Amy gave a small smile, closing the door behind her friend. "Hey... another fight?" She asked with a little chuckle. She got a nod as an answer, and watched as Gema plopped onto the bed. They had plenty of time and ability to vent, since Amy's roommate was currently out... oh so convenient.

Amy hummed, moving and sitting down besides Gema. "It's really tiring you out, Gem. Don't you think it's time to... you know, get a new dormmate?" She asked.

Gema huffed, "nah." She said almost instantly. She didn't even think on it.

"But, why?" Amy asked, genuinely confused.

"That would be boring as hell. I may hate Macy, but arguing can be fun as hell sometimes," Gema huffed. Amy was quiet for a moment, before she shook her head. "You're so ridiculous," Amy chuckled.

"What? I'm not!" Gema said quickly, causing Amy to laugh a bit more, "you so are!" She countered.

It became a back in forth with them, but never once did it turn hostile at all. And yet, even with the lack of hostility, this simple and playful arguing left Gema feeling a bit empty, like it was missing something. As if, it was missing the usual fire. Gema doesn't argue... actually, that's a lie, she argues a lot. But, she argues with Macy the most. This just felt boring.

"Anyway... you guys have like, nothing in common!" Amy said, "you get nothing except for an adrenaline rush out of staying in that dorm," Amy said.

Gema rolled her eyes, "we both like dogs, we like a lotta the same kinds of music... oh, we both like video games. I mean, she's more into minecraft and I like Genshin, but we both like games... that's similar, right?"

Amy was once more stunned quiet. "If you hate her so much, why do you know those things?"

Gema blinked, "oh... well... uhm... she talks really loud, and she gets super annoying so sometimes I can't help but listen cause of how loud she talks," she said quickly.

"Uh huh... whatever you say," Amy laughed, leaning back against the wall. Gema narrowed her eyes before sticking her tongue out at Amy, "so annoying..."

"Like Macy?" Amy asked.

"Oh shut it, no more talk of Macy!" Gema huffed.

And for the rest of the night, Amy and Gema talked about the most random conversation topics there is, like friends do.

But, over the next few days, it was a bit weird. Macy noticed it, and Gema tried to hide it. Macy would attempt to start an arguement for some stupid reason, and Gema would reciprocate... and yet, Gema seemed confused, as if she was contemplating her words as they were bickering. It caused the arguements to eventually fizzle out 9 times out of 10.

Gema was confused, and kept asking herself questions. Why does she know so much about Macy? She doesn't care about her, not by a long shot... right? Right, yeah.

-

With Macy, she's just wondering what has Gema so damn wound up. Macy finds herself wanting to make more arguments to let Gema get any pent up emotions out, but she quickly shakes those thoughts from her head. Why would she dare help her enemy? That is just outrageous.

Macy was currently at that cliche cafe near the college campus, talking with one of her own friends, Alex.

"Alex, I don't know what's up with this girl..." Macy sighed.

Alex chuckled, "you always say that. I bet she can say the same for you, though." He said.

Macy shook her head, "no, I'm always reasonable... wait, that's a lie. I do start random shit for no reason... but she does too!"

Alex hummed, "yeah, she does seem to be really irrational sometimes. I kinda wish people would jump to your side more and shut her-"

"Fuck that, no, Alex," Macy quickly said with a sharp glare, startling Alex quite a bit.

"Woah woah, alright," Alex chuckled nervously, holding his hands up in a sign of peace. "I come in peace, Mace, you didn"t even let me finish my sentence."

Macy leaned back in her chair, "no way was I gunna let you finish that sentence."

"Why, cause you hate anyone saying even the smallest bad thing about your precious Gema~?" Alex sang playfully.

"No! Shut up!" Macy exclaimed, blushing. "I'm just the only one allowed to talk shit about her," she huffed, crossing her arms firmly against her chest.

"Oooh, someone's protective!" Alex laughed, "don't worry, I won't say a thing about her," he added with a smug smirk.

"I really wanna slap that smirk off your face," Macy grumbled with her glare lightening up just a bit, "you're lucky I'm in a good mood."

The conversation continued as normal, but now Macy was thinking... why did she make such an outburst? Why does she actually care if people talk about Gema? Wouldn't that just give Macy some good laughs? Even that thought had Macy's blood boiling, and she truthfully had no idea why.

-

And once again, more days passed, and now it was Macy acting different. She wouldn't stalk Gema, but she would glare at whoever she heard talking about Gema in even the slightest negative way.

Say Gema's pencil looks lame? Glare.

Say Gema looks down today? Glare.

Say Gema's hair is messy? Glare.

Say Gema has something on her face? Glare.

Glare glare glare.

No one really noticed it as much, since Macy was being a bit sneaky with her actions. However, there was one person who noticed it:

Gema.

Gema most definitely noticed it, she always did. She always noticed it because she has always watched Macy. Not in some creepy, weird stalkerish way, but in a way that had Gema infatuated with Macy in a way.

Gema knows Macy's favorite color, food, animal, and more, just by listening to lingering conversations and previous encounters they had in middle and high school. They are somehow best friends, and yet massive enemies at the same damn time, yet they only acknowledge the enemies part. They have never once acknowledged any of their good moments.

Thatd probably because they are either scarce, or they've both just blocked them out.

Yes, they have both laughed at a joke. They have both laughed at something they saw online. And, the two have even praised the other for the quips one would bring to an arguement. And yet, they somehow forget this. Though, it's not their faults. Their interactions are drowning in negative thoughts and constantly yelling, that these small good moments mean nothing.

And, over the few days, these arguments have been diminishing. They'd glance at each other, but never say anything. They were both confused, and were just trying to focus on school work and other drama for now.

But, there was only so long that they could hold out.

And, it was Macy who broke.

-

"If you have something to say, just say it!" Macy snapped, glaring slightly at Gema, who was sitting on one of the two been bags in the dorm.

Gema blinked, surprised at being suddenly called out. "I- I'm... I have nothing to say," he said, trying to bring a huff to her voice.

"Uh huh, then why do you keep staring at me, hm?" Macy asked, arms crossed as she leaned against one of the shelves.

"Sometimes I like to look at you to examine your ugly face and think of new insults," Gema said.

"Oh? So you looking at me constantly is you examining me? Man, my ass might be so goddamn ugly it's gorgeous, because you stare all the time. My ass is just so irresistible isn't it?" Macy said with a smirk.

"No shit," Gema said, without really thinking. Fuck.

Now that got both girls to just... pause. Both were stunned, and now both were silent. What the actual fuck just happened.

"Wha... what?" Macy stammered out.

Gema's face had turned a bit red, and she shook her head. "That came out wrong! I didn't mean to say that! Nope nope!" She said, hoping to recover herself.

Macy narrowed her eyes, "oh no way in hell you're taking that back! Tell me the truth, dammit!" She said.

She had been doing her own thinking... she had thought back on what Alex and she were talking about, why she was so hyper protective of Gema. Macy really didn't want to admit it, but beneath all of that anger and arguing, lied some form of attraction. She had pushed it down so far, from even the start of middle school. And now here it is, bubbling back up. But now, Macy isn't exactly scared.

She isn't scared of telling people she liked another girl now. It's just *telling* the girl who she liked, that she likes her, is the problem. Gema most likely just hates her, so why should she bother?

But what Gema just said had Macy's mind exploding. What if Gema really did reciprocate feelings? What if she really did feel the same? Now, that would certainly change things with them.

Gema fell silent again, and stared at Macy in shock. "What does it mean to you? You wouldn't care anyway!" She said angrily.

"Oh, you have no idea!" Macy huffed. "You have no idea how much your answer will affect me, so just tell me the truth! Did you mean that, or no?"

Gema chewed on the inside of her cheek, shifting in the bean bag. She then muttered out, though loud enough for Macy to hear it, "yes..."

"Oh godddamit..." Macy breathed out, practically crumpling to the floor with a sigh.

"What?!" Gema huffed, anger immediately coming back up to the surface. "Are you gunna make fun of me for this shit? Great!"

"No, you idiot!" Macy groaned. "I'm the same way!" Sbe said quickly.

"What?" Gema asked, instantly confused again, and quite curious.

"If my ass is irresistible, so is yours," Macy said, wringing her hands together.

Now both girls were silent. Now this was something. Gema didn't know what to make of this. She had been unknowingly pining for Macy for years on end, but covered it up with hatred and constant arguements.

But now, here's Macy, announcing she feels the same way.

"You're lying, you're lying just to fuck with me," Gema said, shaking her head. "I'm not falling for your tricks!"

"Oh come on, why the hell would I lie about liking someone? Actually... lots of people do that, yeah, but I'm not that kinda person! I know I can be a bitch, but come on," Macy huffed. "I'm not that low," she said.

Gema took a deep breath and shook her head a bit, "that... I just..."

"Can't believe it?" Macy asked. "Same here."

They were quiet again for some minutes. They both sat in their respective spots, just thinking. What were they going to do now? They couldn't just... come up with a solution right then and there, could they?

"Give me your number," Macy sighed.

"What, why?" Gema asked.

"Even after all these years, I never once got your number, and vise versa. I think now it's time," Macy said, taking out her phone.

"Oh..." Gema nodded slightly, and gave Macy her number. "What now?" Gema asked as Macy typed in her number.

"I mean, what else is there? We clearly both like each other for some unknown fucking reason... so, all that's left is for us to date or some shit," Macy said.

"What?!" Gema exclaimed. "Not so fast! That's so weird!" She said quickly.

"Then what the hell do you have in mind?" Macy asked with a tilt of her head.

"Ack, I dunno, how about we get to know more about each other?" Gema offered.

They're arguing yes, but... it has a different feeling. Gema and Macy aren't angry, and aren't upset at the sounds of the other's voice. All good signs.

"...okay, that does sound smarter," Macy sighed.

"Duh," Gema huffed.

"Oh, shit it," Macy countered.

"Make me," Gema said with a smug little smirk.

"Oh my god... you little..." Macy grumbled, but she couldn't help the little smile that curled onto her own lips.

It's not even misunderstandings that caused their arguing. It was just them hiding their feelings, and both yelling at each other to cover said feelings up. They were both coping with anger, and now they had managed to crack their shells and open up. It took literal years, but here they are.

"...how about you take me to that bakery up the road?" Gema asked.

"Hm... I could go for a muffin, sure," Macy said, moving to stand up.

"You're paying!" Gema said, smirking as she bolted out the door.

"Oh my god, you're so fucking annoying! No way!" Macy whined, and yelled as she ran after Gema out of the dorm.

The other people in the hall were so confused. Macy and Gema both left the dorm, yelling yet smiling and even laughing.

What the literal fuck happened?

Feelings did.
