I See Seven Birds

Summary:

I see seven birds flying tirelessly from the storm,
Wide eyed and buoyant,
Embracing their dawn.
A century anew, existence reborn.
I see seven birds.

———

A recollection of where our birds began, and what has become of them.

Notes:

Hi there! This is my first published work, and it’s an attempt I made about a year ago now at some TAZ poetry angst. This started as a “haha ouch imagine Davenport angst with the o captain my captain line incorporated” and evolved into this. Enjoy!

Work Text:

I see seven birds.

I see seven birds flying tirelessly from the storm,
Wide eyed and buoyant,
Embracing their dawn.
A century anew, existence reborn.
I see seven birds.

I see the twins, a force of their own,
Flame and flamboyance,
Farewells unknown.
But no whole can live as a half alone.
I see seven birds.

I see the lover, humble and bright,
He never lets go:
The embrace feels so right.
A lover "back soon", love lost overnight.
I see seven birds.

I see the protector, selfless and brave,
He rushes in boldly,
His courage won’t cave - so desperate to welcome that blessed early grave.
I see seven birds.

I see the lonely journal-keeper, cold, blank slate,
Once hopeful, starry eyes
still unmarred by cruel fate.
A century of memories.

A decade too late.

I see seven birds.

I see the peacemaker, warm and kind;
To the lonely, he offers
Peace of heart, peace of mind.
Are you his friend? Or did he leave you too behind?
I see seven birds.

I see the wordless one, the leader, the joke.
He lived, and he flew,
And he spoke.
O captain, my captain! see how he broke,
and see how his wings the blood-rain does soak,
and see how he breathes in only to choke on the words.
I see seven birds.

I see seven birds flying tired from the storm.
Bright eyes grown dull,
Beaten and worn.
Broken minds, broken bodies,
Broken hearts to mourn.
I see seven birds.
