Work Text:

Senku stared in astonishment as he felt the unfamiliar pang of anger course through his body. He watched as Gen slowly wrapped his arms around Hyoga’s neck, and melted into their embrace. He was making out with him, right in front of Senku. And as much he knew he had no right to be upset, it still hurt him. Bad. Senku sighed and turned around. Gen wasn’t his. He should not be feeling this way - Gen put out so many signs and Senku constantly rejected him. It was obvious that Gen was interested and needed someone he could depend on. But Senku steadily kept a one track mind on his future career.

This is what happens when you ignore signals. You lose your chance.

“Hey, wait up!” Gen yelled, quickly catching up to him. Senku groaned and began walking faster. He knew it was completely immature to act this way, he knew it would only have ill gains. But he could not help the overwhelming pain in his heart. Senku was not one quick to believe in rumors, but that did not mean he was a death fool. He heard the overwhelming supporting gossip about Gen’s frisky behavior, and his past relationship with Hyoga. He did not think twice of it before, until his heart started gaining feelings for him.

Was that it? Did he have a crush on the two-toned boy? “What is it, Asagiri?” He asked in an uncaring tone, picking up his speed.

“You left early yesterday, Senku-chan. I waited up for you.” Gen said, his staged smile shining brightly on his face.

“It didn’t look like it; it seemed more like you were waiting up for Hyoga.” He scoffed. Gen slowed down briefly as he processed his cold words, before catching up once more.

“What are you…”

“I do not have time to waste. Do you need anything from me?” He asked coldly. The words escaping his mouth surprised even himself; he never spoke with so much emotion before. He did not like it. He looked up to see Gen looking slightly hurt, although he seemed to keep walking alongside him.

“Senku-chan I... I’m sorry for bothering you.” And with that Gen stopped in his tracks and turned around. Senku watched as Gen walked away with a sorrowful aura. It hurt his heart, deeply. He felt everything in him screaming to run after Gen and apologize for his behavior.

For the first time in his life, Senku went against his better judgement and continued walking.

An entire week had passed, and whenever Senku saw Gen, he noticed the dark circles forming around his eyes. He perceived how he seemed to be quieter, and also staying further away from Hyoga. Not even Ukyo was speaking with him; he looked so lonesome in his solitude. But whenever he would look his way and their eyes would meet, he would see the repelling glower he would send back to him. Senku would quickly turn his head, returning his stares back to his own studies. He sighed, taking out his phone and pulling up Gen’s contact information. “Meet me tonight at 8 at the park we first spoke at.” He messaged, before putting his phone away and listening in for the rest of the lecture.

~~~
Senku paced back and forth as he checked his watch. It read 8:03 PM, and he started to feel overwhelmingly foolhardy for thinking that Gen would show up. He shook the thought and pang of sadness out of his mind and pulled out his sketches to work on.
5 minutes passed.
Then 10.
Finally, he decided it was getting well past the time to wait and got up to go home. “Yes, Senku-chan?” Senku turned around quickly to check and found that the voice indeed had come from Gen.
“...Hi.” He said quietly, all the words he had since practiced, for the first time escaping his excellent mind. “Thank you for uh, coming out so late.”
“What did you need, Senku-chan?” Gen quickly replied, distaste evident. He sounded so sad, so alone.
He hated seeing Gen like this.
“I felt it necessary to apologize for my behavior, earlier last week. It was imprudent and intrusive towards you.”
“Apology accepted.” He responded quietly, although his tone still demanded for respect. He was looking up at Senku and his expression was not wavering. For the first time Senku did not have a rebuttal or back up plan. He just looked back into Gen’s sorrowful eyes and begged for him to continue speaking. “Was there anything else you needed?”  Hearing his own words against himself stung aggressively. It was what he deserved, it is what he expected. But part of him hoped that Gen would let them start anew. “If that is all then I am going to return back home -”
Before he realized what he was doing, Senku had taken a hold of Gen and planted a passionate kiss against his lips. Gen did not fight, nor did he respond to his movements. He just stood still, almost as though he was on autopilot.
Senku pulled Gen close and planted his head on his shoulder. Senku felt a tear strolling down his cheek.
“Asagiri Gen. I have no idea what is going on between you and Hyoga, or with anyone else for that matter. I do not know about your past, or past struggles. All I know is that I have an overwhelming desire to see you smile. Whatever you need from me I will take it to the best of my ability to ensure that you receive what you deserve.” He said brashly, his eyes squinting from the hot tears. “I am so sorry for what you’ve been through. I am so sorry for what I put you through. Whether you choose to stand by my side or not, I will stay by yours. I won’t back out on you. I want you to know that you are not alone. Not anymore.” He finished, his chest heaving. He felt Gen hug him tightly before pushing him away. He looked up at Senku with dark eyes and an empty smile.
Senku hated it.
Gen cupped his cheek and pecked his lips before staring back at Senku. “See you in class, Senku.” He said softly before turning around and walking away.
It was the hardest thing Senku had to watch.
