Before Campbell met Alec

Chapter Text

Campbell looks up at the knock on his door. “Hello?” He sits up from the bed and goes over to the door. “Mail.” The man at the door says, passing the boy an envelope. “Okay?” He grabs it, nodding before closing the door. “Who would…?” He asks, sitting back down on the bed with it. He looks at the hand writing, trying to work out whose it was. He opens it up, sliding the bit of paper out. He takes a shaky breath, seeing the initials at the bottom; R.R. “Oh my God.” Campbell opens it up shakily. He skimmed over the letter, it fell from his hand at the last line. ‘My darling you will never be unloved by me’. “No. Please no.” He whimpers, pulling his knees into his body and laying on his side shaking. “He can’t...how does he?” He starts to panic, breathing becoming erratic. “Help.” He tries to shout but it comes as a strained whisper. He looks to the letter on the floor, reaching out to grab the phone and trying to dial Eddie’s number. “Please...please.” He tries to take a breath, the line going through. “Campbell?” The man’s voice rings through, Campbell settling a little. “He found me…” The man nods. “Do you have somewhere else to stay? If he knows your address. Can you tell someone, police?” Campbell shakes his head. “He’s...what if he finds me before I can do that. He might already be here.” He looks to the door. “I don’t think I’d resist. He’s too strong…”

Eddie shakes his head, he starts to pack a bag. “I can come down there? Or I could come pick you up?” Campbell shakes his head. “I can’t go back there. Too many bad memories.” He was still watching the door, he had been since reading the letter. “You shouldn’t come down. It would make him more mad if I was with someone.” Campbell was panicking, he was coming up with scenarios in his head. “Campbell, listen to me. Breathe...In and out.” There was a knock at the door. “Eddie…” He whimpers, grabbing one of his books. “I’m sure it’s just the people who run the motel.” He tried to soothe but didn’t believe that himself. “Cub?” Robbie calls through the door. “Campbell? Are you still there?” Eddie says, the phone was hanging off of the table, Campbell had hidden behind the bed. “Campbell?” Eddie says again, he stays on the line but starts to get worried. “Cub I know you’re in there. Did you get my letter?” Campbell was shaking, tears falling from his eyes. “The lovely man at the desk gave me a key. I said I was your partner.” He puts the key in the lock, twisting it and opening the door. “Why are you hiding from me cub?” Campbell can feel Robbie’s shoes on the wooden floor. “There you are.” Robbie smiles. “What’s happened?” He sits down, pulling the boy to him. Campbell was too frozen in fear to do anything. “I’ve got you. Don’t worry my cub. I’m here now.”
