"sorry for calling so late — i couldn't stop thinking about you."

Summary:

suna can't fall asleep and neither can you.

Work Text:

suna shouldn't be feeling this jittery. it's not like him and truthfully, he hates it.

it's well after midnight and for once, it isn't his fucked up sleep schedule keeping him up. no, it's the hammering within his chest and the remnants of adrenaline still pumping through his veins; a lot went down at atsumu's party and he rubs his face, warm beneath his palm.

for a moment, he wonders if he just imagined it all—a series of alcohol-infused scenarios only he could come up with—because pining does a lot to a person overtime. in his case, it's been a few solid months.

but suna remembers everything, from the look on your face when he pulled you in for a kiss, to the sound of the twins hollering in the distance before he flipped them off, to the the way your fingers gripped at the collar of his shirt just as he was about to pull away. it was definitely real. all of it.

suna groans, though it isn't one of regret. he groans because he can't believe himself—he can't believe that he's actually resisting the urge to smile.

his palms grow clammier by the second. he brings his phone to his face and squints at how bright the screen is. perhaps it's the alcohol still in him, but he wants to talk to you—about what, he isn't exactly sure. if he knows one thing though, it's that he just really wants to hear your voice.

your name is easy to find, not because of how often he texts you, but because of the string of emojis that follow after it. suna doesn't use emojis—not when it comes to his contacts, at least—but you added them there after stealing his phone once and he just never had the heart to change it back ever since. two yellow faces and a heart that have no correlation whatsoever, but they're all so very you.

his fingers hover just above your name. he doesn't even bother glancing at the time and presses call before his doubts take full control and tell him that what he's doing is a terrible idea.

one ring, then another, and just as he's about to give up after the third, he hears your voice.

"hello... rin?" you sound tired, your words coming out a little slurred and muffled.

the sheets rustle beneath his weight and he sits up a little, a hand sliding through his hair. his heart continues to pound away and he feels a little guilty. he hopes that his voice doesn't crack when he speaks, "shit, did i wake you? sorry." it doesn't.

"no, no. you're good," you answer. in the few seconds of silence that follow, he can hear the rustling of sheets from the line on your end. "uh, i couldn't sleep, actually. you too?"

suna notices your nervous laugh and this time, he doesn't fight the urge to smile. maybe he's feeling a little confident now, but he hopes that it's because you're thinking about what happened at the party, too. "yeah, something like that."

you hum in thought. "well, i don't mind keeping you company. just don't fall asleep on me without saying 'goodnight', yeah?"

he rolls his eyes, but laughs because you're laughing; it's nice and contagious.

"yeah, yeah. the same goes for you."

you laugh again. "so..."

"sorry for calling so late, by the way. i just," he pauses. his voice is oddly soft now, a little shaky—he hopes that you don't notice—and he inhales before continuing, eyes falling shut. "this is gonna sound real corny but… i couldn't stop thinking about you."

suna is met with silence and for a moment, he's pretty sure he fucked up—because who says that?—embarrassment clawing at his chest, the skin of his cheeks burning. and then a giggle, airy and almost faint, but it's there, and he waits for whatever it is you have to say to him.

"you know," you start and he can hear the beginnings of a smile catching on your lips. your voice is just as quiet as his, almost a whisper. "i couldn't stop thinking about you, too."

"y-yeah?"

"the twins aren't gonna shut up about it, you know?" you don't have to say anything for him to catch on. it's ridiculous how loud his heart is beating.

suna groans into his palm and you suppress giggle. he can already hear the sound of atsumu's taunts and see osamu's smirk. "they're idiots."

the line falls silent again, but you break it before he can.

"i just have one question." you sound so hesitant all of a sudden, almost as if you don't really want to ask it, and suna feels himself worrying. "you didn't do it because you were drunk, right?"

"i… no."

when suna hears your voice again, it's laced with a laugh of relief exhaled out in shaky breaths. "oh, thank god because... i feel the same way."

okay, he has to be dreaming now, he's sure of it. but with the way his chest tightens, he can't be more wrong. it turns out being giddy doesn't mix well with alcohol because he speaks before he can even process what he's saying, "then how about a date? tomorrow. we'll even ditch the twins." he adds the last part with a ghost of a smile, envisioning you doing the same.

"if we both manage to wake up, sure, rin. i'd love to."
