Chapter Text
Chapter One
Prologue
Early January
Misaki had been called many things in the short five years she had had her quirk. She had been called a demon, a devil, an experiment, the unfortunate result of a mutated quirk and genetic tampering. None of those had bothered her much, even the ones that made less sense but hurt more; the daughter of All For One, Distructor of Worlds, the End of Humanity.
The connection between the insults and her feelings had been severed a long time ago, they didn’t bother her anymore. She had always expected to be hated forever, the only people who weren’t terrified of her were her closest family and her friends from school. She hadn’t needed anyone else.
The day the world changed, the day Misaki made one of the biggest decisions in her life, a decision that would change her life and the lives of everyone around her, it had been a normal day in her parents' multimillion dollar Californian home. She had been in her room watching the patterns that were painting themselves across the ceiling as she commanded them. Her cell phone had rang across the room and the patterns had faded, she had waited for the second ring then when it came, she sat up.
Misaki got up from the bed on the third ring and picked up her phone from where it was sitting on the vanity across the room. “Hello?” She asked, not having recognized the number or the region in the slightest.
The door opened softly behind her and she turned, frowning slightly at her adoptive parents who were watching expectantly from the doorway.
“What-?” She started, pulling the phone away from her ear but there was a sound on the other end of the line and she went silent, pulling the phone back to listen.
“Is this Misaki Eastwood?” Asked a voice in a language that dredged up every memory she had slowly been suppressing.
“Yes,” She responded, the words coming to her easily as she remembered the language she had grown up knowing.
“Hello,” Said the voice, “My name is Nezu, I’m the principal at UA Highschool in Japan,”
Misaki’s breath hitched. “Yes,” She said again. “Nice to make your acquaintance,”
“I’m calling because- I assume your parents have told you?”
“No,” Misaki said, her eyes moving back to where June and Mark Eastwood were still peeking around the door.
“You’ve been accepted into UA’s hero course, on recommendation,” Nezu said.
“Who’s recommendation?” Misaki asked, completely confused and overly enthralled.
“You’re brother’s,” Nezu said, then at Misaki’s silence, added, “Shota’s been tracking your progress at your school- and we both believe you’d be an excellent addition to our hero course,”
“Shota,” Misaki said softly, trying to remember anything other than the faded memories of her life when she was living with her birth parents.
“How are you so useless? A quirkless daughter and a son who decides to be a teacher rather than a hero, how disgraceful,”
“You’ve ruined our family name!”
“Why couldn’t you have anything at all like your brother?”
“Misaki? Happy birthday kid, I’m proud of you,”
Every hurtful word had been from her mother, and every word trying to repair the damage had been from either her father or her brother.
She could see his face as she stared blankly at the dining room wall, the phone call long over.
“What do you think?” June asked. “Will you go?” She handed her youngest daughter her plate across the table late that evening.
Elli was watching Misaki warily, eyebrows creased slightly in worry, taking the plate from her mother.
“I don’t know,” Misaki said, but she did know. Because she had seen what would happen to the world in the patterns that had painted themselves across her ceiling if she didn’t.
