Work Text:
Kou stared at himself in the mirror. He could have saved Mitsuba. He could have done something. He could have done anything . Anything to save him. But Kou was a dickhead so of course he didn’t. He was a piece of shit, how could he have not saved him? What was wrong with him.
He watched as a water droplet slide down the mirror. He reached into the medicine cabinet and grabbed out his antidepressants. He put two on his hand because he needed someway to get rid of the pain for tonight, But then he realized, why not get rid of the pain, forever ? He poured out over half of the bottle onto his hand and put it up to his mouth. He took a deep breath and then slipped them all into his mouth. He grabbed his cup of water and drank some to help get them down.
Kou stood there thinking about what he has just done. Less than 2 minutes later he started feeling sick. He started sweating really badly and his stomach felt like there was acid in it, eating away at the skin inside his stomach.
“TERU!”
“YEAH?” Kou was silent. How the hell was he going to explain what had just happened to Teru?
“KOU?” He still stayed silent. He heard Teru’s footsteps coming up the steps. Kou stared down at the sink, focusing all his energy on not throwing up. Teru walked up to the door and knocked on it. Kou’s legs gave out underneath him and he fell down to the ground making a loud sound.
Teru didn’t know what he was expecting to see when he opened the door but the last thing he was expecting to see was his little brother on the floor, gripping his stomach with an almost empty pill bottle on the counter.
“Kou!?” Kou slowly looked up at Teru, still trying so hard not to throw up.
“H-h-he-help m-“ He quickly turned his head to face the toilet and started throwing up. It felt like his organs were about to start coming out of his mouth too. Soon enough, all he was throwing up was blood. Teru rushed over to Kou and held his hair back for him.
“Kou, wh-why would you do this to yourself?!” Teru was trying to stay strong for his brother but it was kind of hard to whenever that brother was on the floor throwing his guts up. Kou couldn’t even talk. His mouth was full of blood. Teru reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed 911 as quickly as he could.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“M-My brother h-he’s just overdosed! He won’t stop throwing up blood, he’s looking really pale I’m pretty sure if i don’t help him soon he’s going to cough up all of his blood..”
“Okay, sir, please stay calm. Do you know what he overdosed on?”
“H-He overdosed on his antidepressants”
“Can I get an address?” Teru told her the address and then hung up right before she was about to say something else because he didn’t care. All he cared about right now was to take care of his little brother. He looked over to Kou who was laying his back against the bathtub. He was doing all he could to keep all the blood inside him but it was so hard.
“Kou, You could’ve talked to me you know? I could have helped you” Kou continued staring off into the distance.
“No, you couldn’t have”
“Kou... Please just talk to me” Kou glared at Teru.
“You won’t understand. You could never understand” Teru could feel the tears running down his face again.
“I don’t care if I don’t understand! Just talk to me, please! I don’t want you to die...”
“It’s too late for that. There’s no point in talking to you about my problems when i’m going to die soon”
“You won’t die, Kou! I won’t let you!” Teru felt Kou drop his head onto Teru’s shoulder. “Kou?” Teru looked over at Kou who was now very pale.
“Kou?!” Teru started shaking him but he wouldn’t wake up. “PLEASE, KOU, DON’T DO THIS TO ME!” Teru heard the paramedics come in.
“UP HERE!” Teru yelled before putting his attention on Kou again. “Kou, it’s gonna be okay” The paramedics came in and picked him up to bring him out to the ambulance.
It had been a month since Kou’s attempt and he was still in the hospital. The doctors said that he was in a coma and he probably wouldn’t wake up for awhile. Teru didn’t care if Kou wouldn’t wake up for a whole year , he still came and visited him every single day, waiting for when he would wake up. He just wanted his baby brother back. Every single day, Teru would go to the hospital after school and do his homework in Kou’s hospital room. His grades had dropped a lot since the night of Kou’s attempt because usually when he was in Kou’s hospital room he would accidentally zone out instead of doing his work. One day while Teru was doing his work, Kou woke up.
“Te...ru...ni-nii” Teru looked up at him in shock and dropped his notebook and pencil to the floor.
“K-Kou, your a...awake!” Teru could feel tears start to fall out of his eyes. Kou just looked around in confusion.
“What’s happening? Where am I?”
“Kou, your in the hospital...” Kou looked up at him in surprise.
“Wh-What?!”
“You’ve...” Teru paused for a moment. “...been in a coma... for a month” Kou’s eyes widen in horror.
“N-No that can’t be... I-I’ve...” Kou quickly gripped his chest. Just then Teru could hear Kou’s heart monitor speeding up.
“K-Kou!”
“I... need... the-the d- d-doctor” Kou hit the nurse call button on his bed and one of the nurses came in along with two doctors. Teru quickly got out of the doctors’ way and let them go up to Kou. Kou let out a loud scream of pain. He was shaking really badly, his breathing was very off, and he kept on gripping his chest. Kou started calming down a bit as his senses started to fail him one by one. The first to go was his sight as he saw everything get blurry and dark until he couldn’t see anything anymore. No matter how many times and how hard he tried to open them, he still saw black. The last sense to go was his hearing. He could hear Teru screaming in sobs and the doctors yelling orders at each other, but the last thing Kou heard before he lost every single feeling and sense in his entire body, was the sound of the heart monitor flatlining.
