My Best Friend's Brother

Summary:

A normal evening at his best friend's house may be not be what James gets this time around.

Loosely based on Best Friends Brother by Victoria Justice.

Notes:

This has been spinning around in my head since I heard the song again years later so why not? Just a huge fluff ball of words. Also, I wrote Regulus more mature. I'm not sure why. It just happened like that.

Work Text:

“Hello?"

A lighter voice that was most certainly not Sirius picked up the phone. It sent shivers down his spine.

“Regulus! Hey. Uh, I didn’t know you were at Sirius’ place today,” he timidly spoke into the phone.

“Yeah, I’m spending the weekend. Did you want to talk to Sirius?” Regulus asked him with a slight tilt to his voice that meant he had a smile on his face.

“Mhm. Thanks. Nice talking to-

“Hey, Prongs! What’s up? Are you still coming over?” Sirius interrupted him with a burst of excited energy he always seemed to never run out of.

“Yeah, I'll be over soon. I just wanted to call to make sure we were still on for today," James answered.

“Of course. Come on, James. Hurry up!” Sirius exclaimed and hung up in a flourish.

He sat there with the phone still in his hand, panicking internally. Regulus would be there too. He could do this. They've spent time together before, but Regulus was so beautiful that it was hard for him not to get distracted. Sirius teased him sometimes when he would get caught staring. He couldn’t help it.

Finally putting the phone down, James grabbed his jacket and made his way out the door to head over to Sirius’ place.

Sirius and James listened to records while they played video games for a couple of hours, like usual. Every weekend Remus, Sirius, and James would get together and hang out doing whatever.

Regulus would join them sometimes. Those were the days when James would feel like he was in a trance the whole time. Now it was just the two of them and it was nice and quiet except for the occasional bickering over who did better on the game.

“Hey! Remus is stopping by in a few minutes, but he isn’t staying because he has to go to work," Sirius informed him twenty minutes into the game.

“Oh, is he stopping by to give you some kisses, Paddy!” He teased Sirius while making kissing faces at him.

Sirius just blushed at the statement and responded, “You’re just jealous because you don’t get to kiss this beautiful face.” They both laughed until a knock on the bedroom door garnered their attention.

“Sirius, your boyfriend is here.” Regulus teased and appeared in the doorway with a smirk on his face.

“Oh shit. Be right back.” Sirius said, rushing out of the room and down the stairs. James and Regulus heard the front door slam behind him.

James started to panic at being left alone with Regulus. He stared down at his feet, trying not to make eye contact with him.

“So, how are you doing, James?” Regulus asked.

Looking up, he could see Regulus leaning against the wall beside the entry of the room, with his hand raking through his hair.

He looked like a model. His dark black hair was so beautiful, and his eyes were a piercing silver that seemed to look right into his soul when he saw them. He tried to avoid making direct eye contact but giving in to it always felt so riveting. Regulus had on what looked like one of Sirius’ old band t-shirts and black pants that shaped his body very well.

Realizing he hadn’t replied, he quickly began rambling. “I’m good. What about you? It’s kind of cold today. What’s up with the weather changing so much? One day it’s hot then it’s cold-”

“Are you okay?” Regulus pointedly asked with a small smirk on his face.

“Yeah. Sorry. I just- Sorry," James said with a light blush on his face.

“No, don't be sorry. It’s cute when you ramble.” Regulus said and pushed off the wall.

He walked over to where James sat on the floor at the end of the bed and sat down beside him. Their legs brushed from the proximity making James look away with a light blush on his cheeks. Regulus was always so flirty with him when no one else was around.

James let out a squeak-like sound when Regulus reached out and grabbed his hand and began rubbing it softly with his thumb. “So. I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go with me later to the diner downtown?” Regulus asked.

James’ eyes widened and he was wearing a look of confusion. “Uh, why? I mean, yeah, but-”

“I want to take you out. I mean, we have never hung out without Sirius around so it would be nice with just the two of us. A date, if you want?” Regulus said and scratched the back of his neck nervously.

“Oh! A date! Yes, I would love to go," James exclaimed with a huge grin on his face.

Looking into the other's eyes, they both began to gravitate toward each other. James closed his eyes, expecting a kiss any second. He could only hear the sound of both of them breathing.

When they both heard Sirius’ footsteps coming up the stairs, they sprung apart. Regulus stood up and walked toward the door. “I’ll see you later then."

Before walking away, he winked back at James. When Sirius walked in, he bumped into his brother and yelled, “Reg, get out of here! James and I have some top secret stuff to plan."

After Regulus disappeared, Sirius turned to look at James with a creepy smile on his face and said, “So?”

“What?” James asked. He really wished that Sirius would get that look off his face.

“Did he finally ask you out?” Sirius replied in an exasperated tone.

“Wait, you knew?” James questioned with furrowed brows.

“Mate, we all knew. You could see it from a mile away. You may as well have worn a sign that said ‘Swooning over the less attractive Black Brother’ at all times,” Sirius teased.

James punched him in the arm.

“Ow!” Sirius laughed while still rubbing his arm.

“How did you know?” James asked.

“Well, you were constantly staring at each other when the other wasn't looking and then Regulus came up to me a week or so ago to ask if it was okay to ask you out," Sirius stated nonchalantly.

James softened, knowing that Regulus had asked Sirius first. Knowing he didn’t want to ruin that dynamic they all shared was so sweet.

“I really like him. I know he’s your brother, but he always makes me smile," James swooned over the younger Black.

“Okay. That’s all that matters, but if you hurt him we are going to fight and vice versa. I already had this conversation with him.” Sirius said and turned off the game along with the record player.

“Wait, why are you turning everything off?” James questioned.

“We are going to get you ready for this date,” Sirius proclaimed while he looked through the closet. James jumped up onto his feet while Sirius found some clothes that he found suitable for the evening. They were nice but still casual.

“Sirius, are you sure this is okay? I mean, this is your brother," James asked the other boy.

“Prongs, I love you and I love my brother. You are both in the top 3 people I care about. Also, if this works out, we can go on double dates! It'll work, don't worry. It makes sense,” Sirius pointed out and began excitedly rambling about all the places they could go out to together.

"You seem more invested in this than you should be," James mumbled and looked at his reflection in the mirror, eyeing his messy hair and glasses. Insecurity started eating at him on the inside. He never believed he stood a chance when it came to Regulus.

Taking a deep and calming breath, he walked toward the door. “I’m ready," James stated in an uneasy voice.

Sirius grabbed his arm with a tight grip. He turned him around and sincerely spoke, “You look great, mate. Regulus is downstairs waiting for you, I’m sure. Good luck, but I doubt you'll need it.”

James smiled while walking out of the bedroom and went downstairs. When he arrived at the bottom of the stairs, Regulus was standing there and his expression seemed to light up the whole room. James went lightheaded just looking at him. “Hi.”

“Hey. You look gorgeous," Regulus complimented him.

James shyly looked down to the ground, but then Regulus grabbed his hand and he inhaled deeply. “You look beautiful,” he breathed out in just a mumble after looking up into those silver eyes that haunted his dreams. Regulus’ cheeks were flushed.

“I-” Regulus was cut short when James surged forward and kissed Regulus with what little courage he could summon.

“Wow. What was that for?” Regulus asked with a dazed expression on his face.

“I have been waiting so long to do that,” James said while smiling bashfully at the other boy.

“Well, I hope we get to do it more because that was amazing,” Regulus said and looked at him with a glint in his eye. He looked so devilishly handsome and James came to a realization.

“I can’t believe I just kissed my best friend's brother," he exclaimed.

“Finally," a voice from upstairs trailed down to them.

They both looked up to see Sirius standing at the top of the stairs, leaning against the banister, smirking at them.
