Mother Always Knows

Summary:

Lady Asgardian reader (you could make her human, or gender neutral it won't change anything important in the story) who has known the royal family for years and has started what she thought was a secret relationship with Loki only to find out mama knows all.
Loki x Reader, but the focal point is Frigga, because I was in the mood to write her in particular

Notes:

It is technically a sequel to my last story Libraries and Late Night Snacks, but it can stand alone just fine. It’s short and fluffy and focuses on the reader’s relationship with Frigga. If you do read it after the other story, it takes place a few months after that. Still consider it prior to Thor 1 or just plain ol’ AU.
Originally written by me a few years ago for my Tumblr.

Work Text:

You traveled through the open market enjoying all the sounds and scents that Asgard had to offer this morning. It was shaping up to be the nicest day in a few weeks and you were pleased to feel the sun warm your skin this early in the day. Wandering somewhat absent minded you watched others ogle at golden wares and haggle over fruit prices. You should have been shopping for produce for your mother, but you were enjoying simply meandering the curving paths of the market too much to focus on any particular vendor.

You heard a commotion behind you. Turning to the noise you saw people moving away from the central path, making way for a small collection of horses. It didn’t take you more than a moment to recognize the newcomers to the market. Each horse was elegantly adorned with headdresses and a couple draped in silks. You stepped out of the pathway, but only slightly, making sure to stay in the front of the crowd. As the horses slowed you nodded to the two guards riding the first horses, they nodded back before one hopped off his horse to walk around to help the third passenger off her horse.

As always Frigga was a beauty beyond comparison. Her golden hair falling down her back perfectly complimenting the ivory dress she wore. She spotted you instantly coming up to you with a radiant smile.

“Good morning y/n. How is this morning treating you, my dear?” Her voice always soft and melodic.

“Very well ma'am” you replied bowing your head.

“No need for formality sweetheart. We’ve know each other far to long for that.” You met her smile and nodded. “Are you here to shop?” She asked eyeing the empty basket in your hand.

“Yes, or at least that is what I should be doing. I got a bit distracted with the nice weather.” You answered and she looped an arm around your free one.

Turning back to the guards and the maiden who accompanied her, she gestured them over. “Could you please take the horses to the edge of the market and keep watch there?” She addressed one of the guards. He agreed and started to take the horses in that direction with another guard. You ventured back into the thick of the market with Frigga, her maiden and the remaining guard.

You successfully acquired everything your mother had requested and against your pleadings, Frigga didn’t allow you to pay for anything. You thanked her countless times and each time she simply smiled and told you it was the least she could do. You always liked the queen, she was sweet and easy to talk to. You never felt awkward round her and you learned quickly she was much wittier than you would have believed upon only seeing her sit next to Odin. You knew it was from Frigga that Loki learned his charm and wit.

After you both were satisfied with your bundle of goods and a bit tired from walking the entire market’s length, you reached the royal horses at the market’s edge. Frigga asked the same guard from earlier to this time take your goods to your house for you, insisting you come with her back to the palace for brunch and tea. You couldn’t deny her.

As expected the cakes, fruits, and cheeses presented on a terrace at the palace were extraordinary. You ate your fill, but noticed about half way through your meal that Frigga spent most of the time simply watching you. A thoughtful look graced her beautiful face.

“Do I have something on my face?” You asked, touching the side of your chin.

She laughed lightly, “No no, dear, I was just wondering…” she looked back towards to the doorway inside, smiling as a shadow moved away from the entrance as she did. “You know I love my sons very much.” You nodded. “I like to think I know them very well.” You nodded again, a knot forming in your throat. Frigga knew.

She continued, “I’ve also known you for quite a long time. I’ve watched you grow up into quite the remarkable woman, I must say.”

You whispered a “Thank you.”

“That all being said, I have noticed a couple things as of late.” Her smile only widened as she spoke. Frigga knew. “One. You have been visiting us quite frequently these last few months. You are practically always here in fact. Yet oddly enough your bed seems untouched most mornings when the chambermaid comes to straighten up.” Frigga knew. “Two. My youngest seems to be rather enthusiastic these days. To be honest I haven’t seen him enjoying himself this much since I was teaching him tricks as a child.” Frigga knew. She definitely knew.

You could feel your face heat up and you tried to your best to make eye contact with her, but you couldn’t bring your self to quite look at her anymore. “Ma'am, I…” you trailed off.

She laughed again, “You should know by now I’ve come to love you immensely. If there were to be any particular reason for your frequent visits and Loki’s heartwarming attitude, I would fully endorse it.” She stood up at that and wished you a good day, elegantly leaving you dumbfounded on the terrace. Yes, Frigga most definitely knew.

You sat there alone for a moment silently sipping tea. As if he’d been waiting for Frigga to leave, which he probably was, Loki himself walked out on to the terrace soon after she left. You stood up and turned to him, letting him come up to you. He ran his hands up and down your arms smiling wide. Raising an eyebrow at your dumbfounded expression. “Everything alright, my love?”

“Your mom knows about us.” You stated simply, ready for him to express concern over this revelation. He simply continued to smile wide.

“Well obviously she does,” his casual response causing to open you mouth in disbelief. “We haven’t exactly been very secretive.” He laughed so similar to Frigga. You were still reeling from everything, unable to comprehend that he was okay with this.

“It was your idea to keep it hushed!”

“Of course it was, but only at first. I did revel in the idea of keeping you as my dirty little secret. Now I feel quite the opposite.” His smile turning a bit wicked. “Now I want to mark you in such a way that no matter where you go, what you do, everyone will know that you are mine.”

You slapped his shoulder as if you were against the idea. However both of you knew you weren’t. Of course you were his. You were utterly and completely his.
