Ticket Preorders for the anticipated movie ‘Redamancy’ have gone back online after selling out in record time.
Akaashi pursed his lips as he stared down at the screen of the phone in his hand. Messages flicked across in record speed- he was used to having a lot of notifications, but the traffic his twitter had been getting in the few weeks since the Redamancy hype started was record breaking.
Sakusa glanced over at him from the driver's seat of the car, his hand clutched tight around the steering wheel. “What are you thinking?”
Akaashi tore his gaze away from his phone and through the windshield. The street ahead of them was oddly devoid of traffic. Akaashi shouldn't be surprised, since they were heading out of the city to the next filming location, but he was used to the heavy traffic of a big city.
“Do you think you're going a bit overboard this time?” He finally settled on asking, after battling with words for a few moments.
Sakusa didn’t bother to lift his gaze from the road. “With what?”
“You know what.”
Sakusa only shrugged. “It's good for the hype. You think anything else could have gotten people as excited for this movie as they are now?”
Akaashi said nothing. Just let the conversation drop and the two of them fall back into steady silence.
Ah yes. The famed Bokuaka rivalry. The one that had torn up the internet, the one that had propelled both his and Bokuto’s careers to new heights. Akaashi could understand the appeal- the fans wanted drama. Intrigue. What better way to get that then a rivalry between your favorite actors?
It was a shame it was all fake.
Akaashi wasn't even entirely sure how it started but he could probably put together a basic picture. Long ago, years ago, when they were both still trying to make a name for themselves. Their agents had known each other prior to being hired by each of them, had a proper rivalry of their own going for who knows what reason. And their burning desire to prove they were better than the other bled onto Bokuto and Akaashi, constantly pitting them against each other for starring roles for the same movie.
The fanbase did the rest.
And truthfully, Akaashi had no idea how it had managed to go on as long as it had. He was shit at pretending to hate Bokuto, despite being an actor. The fact that most of their bickering could be done over written words was his only saving grace. And lord knew he couldn't genuinely hate him- the golden band around his ring finger proved that.
Ah, the fans would lose their minds if they knew.
“Our rivalry is nothing more than an extension of your own.”
Sakusa’s gaze narrowed and he glared out at the road like it had personally wronged him. “Just as well. If Atsumu thinks he's a better agent and has a better client than he's got another thing coming.”
“I’m flattered by your faith in me.” Akaashi teased, but he knew Sakusa’s confidence was genuine. Akaashi wouldn’t have stuck with him as an agent all these years if they didn't believe in each other.
Sakusa was a good friend. And as his good friend it was Akaashi’s solemn duty to give him a hard time about the unbearable tension he and Atsumu had going on, for Akaashi’s sake if nothing else. Pretending to hate his husband was exhausting.
“Oh shuddup.” Sakusa muttered, and Akaashi only laughed. “We’re almost there. Get ready.”
“Oh how exhausted I’ll be,” Akaashi mused as Sakusa turned the car onto a dirt road, leading through an empty grassy field that they would be shooting in. “Having to act even when we aren't filming. Pretending to hate my beloved no less!”
“Cut the dramatics. It's good for press.”
“But good for my heart? I think not.”
“You don't look it but you're every bit as dramatic as that husband of yours.”
“My heart, Sakusa.”
“I’ll buy you some Cheerios.”
From the corner of his eye, Bokuto watched as Akaashi and Sakusa pulled up to the filming location. They had to arrive separately, feeding into the illusion of their rivalry, and Bokuto made sure to keep his gaze pointedly fixed on the hustle and bustle of the crew getting everything ready for filming as he lounged about near his own car.
“Yer kinda obvious.” Atsumu said suddenly. Bokuto’s heart leapt to his throat and he whipped his head around to stare at his agent wide eyed.
“No I’m not.” He finally settled on saying.
“Then stop looking over there. Rivals don’t ogle each other.”
“I’m not ogling!”
“Ya really are.”
Bokuto sighed, leaning his head back against his car. “This is hard. Why must I get dragged into your guy’s little rivalry?”
“You weren't complaining when it helped get the both of ya off the ground.” Atsumu said. “Besides, even if it's not as big of a rivalry as everyones been led to believe, ya can't tell me you guys aren't at least a little competitive. Dontcha wanna be the best?”
That caught Bokuto’s attention. “The best?”
Atsumu nodded, latching onto the idea immediately. “Ya can love him and still want to compete with him. See who’s better.”
And Bokuto always did have a competitive streak. “So then… a mini rivalry?”
“A mini rivalry. As long as it's good enough to convince the press.”
Atsumu hadn’t been his agent for this long without learning how to give Bokuto a pep talk. It was times like these when Bokuto was extremely grateful for that fact.
He could do a mini rivalry. Probably.
“Is that what you and Sakusa have going?” Bokuto blurted out and Atsumu blinked.
“A mini rivalry?” Atsumu raised an eyebrow. “Aw hell no. We’ve got a full rivalry. That dipshit thinks he's hot stuff and he's wrong.”
“But you just said you can love someone and still want to compete with them.”
Atsumu’s shoulders raised, like he was bristeling up. “I don’t love him!” He protested, his tone just a tad more defensive then it needed to be.
Bokuto had always been good at reading people. At least, that's what Akaashi told him.
And to Bokuto those sounded like the words of a pining idiot.
But before he could press the issue farther the director's voice rang out from somewhere on set, “Alright everyone gather round! We’re gonna start filming!”
Bokuto narrowed his eyes at his agent. “You got lucky this time.”
“Lucky?” Atsumu demanded, but Bokuto was already turning away to hurry across the grass field to where everyone was gathering.
When he arrived the director was droning on about the scene they were supposed to be filming, where the main characters have a big fight and break up. Bokuto had to repress a sigh. He’d been dreading this one- even if it was all pretend, he didn't fancy the idea of breaking up with Akaashi.
Akaashi silently slid up to his side, standing a few feet apart. Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
If it weren't for their dumbass agents, Bokuto would have the luxury of being able to reach out and take Akaashi’s hand in his own, but he couldn’t because they were supposed to be real life rivals.
And all this because the two of them had unbearable chemistry neither would acknowledge, through a fault of pride or arrogance or something.
Perhaps, it was about time they staged an intervention.
For now Bokuto just wanted to get through this filming session without dying.
“Alright, places people!”
Just like that the small crowd dispersed, the crew hurrying off to take up their positions holding cameras and boom boxes and whatever other tools they used to make their movie magic.
Bokuto had ran over this scene in his head many times before, agonizing over how he was going to make it through- and he knew Akaashi had too. They’d spent many late nights over the past few weeks saying their lines to each other.
And every time had been a disaster.
For being award winning actors, they were shit at pretending to hate each other. There was always a certain level of awkwardness, of reluctance even though they both knew full well it was all pretend.
Atsumu wasn’t all that helpful. When he’d told him he had laughed, and told Bokuto he was a lovesick idiot.
But they were professionals, and the scene needed to be filmed. One way or another, they would get through this, and he and Akaashi <em>had</em> been slowly improving on their performance the more they had practised.
As the crowd hurried away, Akaashi crossed his arms and turned away, heading for the part of the grassy field cleared of equipment.
“Good luck. You’ll need it.” He called over his shoulder. It was most certainly to keep up their rivalry facade, but Bokuto could pick out the double meaning.
Both of them were wholly unprepared. They’d need all the luck they could get.
Bokuto meandered over to join Akaashi in the field. They took their positions wordlessly, standing side by side and looking out towards the cluster of cameras and people so that they could get the perfect shot.
From behind the line of cameras and equipment, the director called “Action!”
“Why’d you bring us here?” Bokuto melted into his role immediately, pushing any doubts he had to the back of his mind.
“It’s an important place to us.” Akaashi replied easily, with so much conviction it took no effort at all to forget he was Akaashi Keiji and think he was the character he played instead. “This is where we went on our first date. Where we kissed for the first time. Where we promised to stay together forever.”
“You think sentiments are going to help you? After all the shit you’ve done and said?”
Their characters had been together for years at this part of the story, but they had been hitting rocky patch after rocky patch. Arguments they never compromised on, fights they never made up after, struggles they never supported each other through. It was all piling up, too quickly.
“No. I’m not here to try and fix us.” Akaashi’s voice was cold, so cold it almost hurt Bokuto.
It was all pretend. Their looming breakup, fast preaching, all pretend. Just like this goddamn rivalry. Unlike Sakusa and Atsumu’s rivalry.
“Then what are we here for?”
Akaashi said nothing, staring out at the field in silence. After a moment he looked over his shoulder at Bokuto, indifference scrawled across his face. Like this didn’t matter to him in the slightest.
“I figured we should keep our firsts in one spot. Wrap it up like a neat little package.”
Bokuto pursed his lips together, trying his best to look like realization was slowly dawning over him. “What do you mean?”
Akaashi turned away from him, refusing to meet his eyes. It was different than in the script- he was supposed to face Bokuto head on with no regret. But when Akaashi hesitated before speaking, he sounded just barely certain of himself.
“I’m ending this.” He whispered, with so much restrained reluctance it felt too real.
It was all pretend.
While Akaashi’s performance was still spectacular, Bokuto knew him well enough to see the cracks. The way his arms were tucked in close to his sides, the way he went against the stage directions to avoid Bokuto’s eyes, the way his words carried hesitance so subtly it was nothing more than an aftertaste.
And Bokuto was just as bad at this.
“What do you mean…?”
His voice was soft, his acceptance softer, as his character came to terms with their disaster of a relationship reaching its breaking point.
“I can’t do this anymore.” Akaashi spun around all at once, so suddenly Bokuto was almost caught off guard. “This back and forth, the fighting and the sleepless nights I can’t do it.”
His eyes were glossy. Even if they were bad at this, Akaashi was still the same award winning actor as ever.
Bokuto swallowed like he had a lump in his throat. “So you’re giving up? After everything we worked through to stay together? If we were going to break up, we could have done it ages ago!”
“Working through this isnt working! We’ve hit a dead end!” Akaashi paused for a moment, chest heaving with deep breaths. “I’m sick of this. I can’t keep using my blood to water a fruitless tree.”
“Then was it all for nothing? All the struggling when we were going to end anyway?”
Akaashi’s voice was nothing more than a whisper when he spoke. “...Yeah. I guess it was.”
A moment of silence. Then the director's voice cut through the crisp morning air. “Cut! That's a wrap!”
The catter of the crew instantly began as it always did after a moment of silence for filming. People rushed to survey footage, to play the audio and adjust the lighting.
“You could definitely use work.” Akaashi said after a moment. The glossy coat over his eyes had faded, leaving no trace behind. Akaashi had always been oddly talented at crocodile tears.
“Work?” Bokuto demanded, but Akaashi was already turning away, hurrying into the crowd to join Sakusa presumably.
Pretending to be rivals was so exhausting. Right now they could be hanging out together, chatting about whatever came to mind. Instead they had to constantly be split up when they were filming.
Bokuto must have stood there, slently sulking for longer than he thought, because Atsumu appeared in front of him, blocking his view from where he was absently staring out into the crowd.
“That was hard to watch.” He said immediately, and Bokuto bristled.
“I’m trying my best!” And then, “...It wasn't that obvious, was it?”
Atsumu hummed and shrugged. “Not really. Not ‘less ya know what to look for, like I do. But it’ll probably be passable.”
“Great.” Bokuto sighed. “Don’t want to do that again.”
“Well, that's the director's call. But I can say with certainty ya definitely outshone Akaashi in that one. Brilliant emotion.”
“You think?”
“Mhm. Better keep it up though ‘cause if the director doesn't like the shot you’ll have ta do it again.”
Bokuto sucked in a breath, his eyes widening. “Once was enough for me! I’m good without doing a second, thanks!”
Before Atsumu could answer, the director called out once more. “Alright wrap it up people! We film again tomorrow at sunset!”
“Saved by the call. Lucky duck.” Atsumu muttered.
“I don’t feel very lucky. We’ve still got some scenes left to film later.”
“Aye but for now ya get to go home and be sappy with yer husband. Happy?”
A smile instantly found its way to Bokuto’s face, and he perked up in a second. “Oh definitely. That makes things a lot better.”
Atsumu’s eyes narrowed, and he stared at Bokuto like he had just tried to tell him the moon isn't real. “Y’all are gross. Fuckin’ love.”
“Well if <em>you</em> weren't on about a rivalry maybe you could have it toooo-”
“Shuddup! Keep this up and I’ll make you drive!”
“Poor lonely Atsumu unable to figure out his feelings-”
“I’m not taking you home anymore.”
“No wait Atsumu-”
Akaashi was back to watching his twitter notifications come in at record speed when Bokuto got home, a good twenty minutes after he did. A few seconds after he heard the door open Bokuto appeared in the doorframe, crossing their bedroom in a few quick strides to collapse on the bed.
“Are you okay?” Akaashi asked, not making a motion to move.
His only reply was a long drawn out groan, muffled since Bokuto was face planted onto the comforter.
“Pretending to hate you is hardddd.” He whined, moving his head to the side so that he could speak properly. “And Atsumu gave me shit about it.”
“Well did you give him shit about him and Sakusa?”
Bokuto perked up immediately, sitting up properly and wrestling his shoes off so he could scoot further up the bed. “I did! But he denied it like they <em>always</em> do and then he refused to drive me home until I apologized like a billion times and THEN he made ME drive the car but I got super lost and he wouldn’t help me out-” A pause, so that Bokuto could take a huge breath, “And it took as a long time to here but I’m here now and he left to go to his house. So.”
Akaashi put his phone aside so that Bokuto could lean up against him, wrapping his arms around his husband. “Sakusa didn’t give me as much trouble. But he did vehemently deny anything.”
Bokuto huffed out a laugh, tucking his face into the crook of Akaashi’s neck. “I’m not surprised. They really are the real rivals in this situation.”
“And it's painfully obvious they have a thing for each other.” Akaashi agreed. “Did you see the way they were looking at each other the other day? And that one time when Sakusa brough Atsumu soup when he was sick even though he’s got that germ thing?”
“Maybe…” Bokuto mumbled, drawing the word out like he was still trying to piece his idea together. “Maybe if they didn’t have us to hide behind, they wouldn’t have an excuse to deny whatever they've got going on.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well like,” Bokuto shifted so that he could look at Akaashi properly. His golden eyes were shining, a certain spark in them that told Akaashi he had just had a wonderful idea. “They've always promoted us as being rivals and its let them be rivals too. And if people don't think we're rivals anymore they would have to own up to the fact that they dont hate each other, and maybe they'd sort themselves out.”
A smile slowly found its way to Akaashi’s face as just what Bokuto was suggesting sunk in. “Are you suggesting that it's time to come clean? After all this time?”
“Yeah, I guess I am.”
“They would never approve of this. Certainly not when Redamancy is still in the works.”
“Isn't that the entire point though?” Bokuto fell silent for a moment before he piped up again. “We could do it at the premiere. I bet it would actually hype things up more. Get people talking.”
“Well arent you devious.” Akaashi mumbled. “But I like it. To the premiere, then?”
“To the premiere! And the best part is that we can watch it together now instead of separately!”

“Oh they made fanfiction about us.” Akaashi commented absently, once again watching his twitter notifications trickle through. It had become something of a hobby for him- even if keeping up the rivalry charade could be quite frankly exhausting, he couldn't deny the thrill that came from watching their fans freak out.
“They what?” Bokuto twisted his head to set it atop Akaashi’s shoulder and watched his phone screen. They lounged in their bed together, enjoying one of their rare days off- perks of working on the same set, their schedules often lined up, more than they ordinarily would.
Akaashi hummed, scrolling through his feed. “Everyone is freaking out right now. Someone pointed out we went to high school together and now it's trending.”
“Oh,” Bokuto shrugged, leaning back against the pillows, “I’ve seen tons of shipping wars popping up lately. About us and Sakusa and Atsumu too. If only they knew.”
“If everything goes according to plan they’ll know soon enough.” Akaashi muttered, a small smile tugging up the corners of his lips.
Their half baked idea from days ago about coming clean had taken a more solid shape since then. The details were still a tad hazy, but they knew what they wanted to do, and it involved blowing off both of their agents, showing up to the premier together, and breaking twitter.
“I can’t wait! Partially because I’ll get to hang out with you in public but mostly because their pining is unbreakable!” Bokuto declared, grabbing his phone from where it was tangled in the sheets to flip through it. A moment later he held it up to Akaashi’s face triumphantly, another one of their agents' twitter threads on the screen.
“Are you seeing this shit?” Bokuto demanded. “Those two are unbearable! Just kiss already!”
Akaashi had to admit, the barely contained pining encased in words was tough to get through. ‘Just kiss already’ summed it up nicely.
Several of the comments seemed to be declaring the same thing. Good to know they weren't the only ones who could spot the pining from miles away.
Instead he asked, “Do you think we were ever that oblivious?”
Bokuto made a face and shit his phone off. “Gods I hope not.”
“Kenma’s told me many times we were ‘dumber than gen one pokemon types’. I’ve always refused to believe him.”
“The only dumb people around here are our agents! At least we got ourselves together before high school was over.”
“Those two didn’t even go to the same high school.”
“But still.” Bokuto closed his eyes with a heavy sigh. “Counting down the days till the premier.”
“It's only a while longer.” Akaashi said with a smile. “At the very least, this is excellent entertainment.”
Bokuto grumbled something about their love story being ‘better than a B rate enemies to lovers.’
Excellent entertainment indeed. And it certainly helped that he could stroke the flames with a simple ‘Bokuto sucks’.
Even if it was annoying, he hadn't had this much fun in a long time.

Another day ment another filming session, and it had been a particularly tiring one. They were doing the last few scenes, crunching everything in that needed to be done so they could meet their deadlines, and Akaashi was quite frankly exhausted. Luckily for him they were wrapping up, getting to the tail end of a rough day that had run him absolutely ragged.
Sakusa had brought him cups of coffee in between scenes, offering muted words of encouragement. They may have been lackluster, but Akaashi appreciated the effort. And the caffeine. Most of all the caffeine.
But even the wonders of hyper activity couldn’t completely ward off his exhaustion. The day was almost over. Almost. He just had to make it a few more hours.
Bokuto didn’t seem to be nearly as run down as Akaashi was. He was bouncing around, going from person to person to watch as the crew did whatever it was they needed to do. Akaashi couldn't help but be envious of his seemingly infinite well of energy. Bokuto was like a generator, constantly hyped up with an infectious energy oh so easily passed to anyone who was around him.
And Akaashi couldn't even take advantage of it because they were supposed to be rivals and rivals most certainly didn’t cuddle up with each other and it was a damn same because they didn’t even hate each other.
But Akaashi was tired, and his coffee cup was almost empty, and Sakusa was who knows where, and Bokuto was peeling away from the bustle of people around the set to go linger by the table set up with a coffee maker and grocery store pastries.
“Fuck it,” Akaashi muttered, and made his own way over to the table.
The table was partially hidden behind boxes of props and scattered filming equipment, so while they were still technically in view of the rest of the cast and crew, they had some semblance of privacy. Enough for Akaashi to slide up next to Bokuto, shoulder to shoulder, not quite touching but still decidedly closer then so called rivals should be.
“Hey.” He whispered under his breath, fiddling with the coffee maker like he hadn’t already had an ungodly amount of caffeine.
“What are you doing here?” Bokuto asked, pausing from where he was reaching for a croissant.
“I work here.”
“Ha ha. I mean here with me specifically.”
“I’m married to you.”
Bokuto rolled his eyes, but a smile was tugging at his lips. “What happened to don’t be seen with each other outside of when it's necessary?”
“I’m tired. Crunch days close to the deadline suck.”
Bokuto sighed, fetching his croissant and taking a bite. “Tell me about it. But it's almost done. There's that at least.”
“And after the premier we never have to do this rivalry thing again.”
Bokuto fixed him with a cheeky grin. “Atsumu and Sakusa are going to kill us. I can't wait.”
“Could certainly come a little quicker though.”
They lapsed into silence, lingering in front of the table like ghosts. It was nice, to just be able to chill. But they weren't supposed to be so casually standing with each other. Whether Akaashi liked it or not, their bliss would have to be cut short.
So he glanced over his shoulder, eyes roaming across the set to make sure no one was looking in their direction before he grabbed Bokuto’s head and angled it towards him to give him a peck on the lips.
It was over in a flash and Akaashi was leaning away and turning around, satisfied no one had seen.
“What was that for?” Bokuto called after him as Akaashi stepped away from the table, his voice high in surprise.
“Recharging.” He said simply with a soft smile, and then turned back around to hurry away from the table before any one could catch them cozying it up.
Sakusa would lecture him if he found out, no doubt. But what Sakusa didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.

Akaashi’s phone was blowing up, and for once it wasnt from twitter.
Well. That was only a half truth. There were plenty of twitter notifications, more than usual actually because it was the eve of the Redamancy premier and everyone was about ready to kneel over from excitement.
But there was a different sort of notification plaguing Akaashi’s phone- angry text messages from one Sakusa Kiyoomi.
“Is he still at it?” Bokuto asked idaly, resting his head on the top of Akaashi’s shoulder to watch the notifications pop up on the screen.
“Isn't Atsumu doing the same with you?”
Bokuto shrugged and gave him a cheeky grin. “No idea! I muted his contact hours ago.”
“Perhaps I should do the same,” Akaashi mused, and unlocked his phone to read Sakusa’s messages properly.

Akaashi clicked his phone off after putting Sakusa on silent. Once word reached his agent of what he and Bokuto were doing it would no doubt start blowing up again, which wouldn’t do. He had a red carpet to walk down, pictures to pose for, movies to watch, and rumors to start. There was no time for text messages.
The limo he and Bokuto had rented specifically for ditching their agents slowly slowed down, and through the tinted windows he could see them slow to a stop in front of the massive grandiose movie theater Redamancy would be premiering in. Only the best for the only thing the movie scene has been talking about for months.
“Are you ready for this?” Bokuto asked. He held his arm out to Akaashi, the expensive fabric of his suit never crinkling even with the motion.
Akaashi smiled and took his arm. His own suit was sharper and leaner cut than Bokutos, the fabric midnight black to Bokuto’s bright white. They complimented each other in contrasting ways- a subtle enough nod to the other's outfit that if they weren’t showing up together it might not have been noticed.
And the original plan had been to show up separately, with their agents like they always did.
But the plan the two of them cooked up months ago was finally coming full swing, and Akaashi could hardly wait to step out and watch their rivalry unfold.
So he said, “I was born ready,” And squeezed his husband's hand tighter as the valet came forward to open the limo door. Bokuto’s wedding band cut into Akaashi’s skin, sending his heart somersaulting with thrill.
The moment the door opened the camera flashes started, so blindingly bright Akaashi could hardly see the red carpet in front of him. But this was hardly the first red carpet premiere he’d been to, so he didn't need to see to know what would be awaiting him.
The long carpet would stretch to the doors of the theater, decked out in flashing lights with stand up backgrounds to pose for pictures in front of. Off to the side, behind the roped off sections that kept the carpet clear would be throngs of crowds, fans, reporters, paparazzi, and everything in between, shouting questions and holding up cameras.
They were here for a story, a scoop, a show. And that's what they would be getting.
Bokuto stepped out first. The cheers and shouts grew to a crescendo, the camera flashes going off one after the other.
And then Bokuto reached behind him, took Akaashi’s hand, and helped him out too.
The door shut behind them. The camera flashes paused. The crowd quieted down.
And then they erupted.
So many things were shouted in their direction that Akaashi couldn't even comprehend them. If the camera flashes were defining before it was nothing compared to now- so many were going off in so many directions that Akaashi had to squint against the light.
It was unheard of, after all, for rivals to arrive at an event together. Unheard of for them to stand in front of the cameras, hand in hand, when there was no acting involved.
From somewhere in the crowd comes the shout of “Rings?” before being quickly drowned out by the roar of the crowd. It doesn't matter. It will be common knowledge by morning anyway.
Bokuo squeezed Akaashi’s hand together and they walked forward together, smiling for the cameras with practised ease and waving amicably.
The pictures go by quickly. They stop in front of the poster boards, pose and smile with their coworkers, the director, the crew and cast, before it's time to head inside to see the first ever showing of Redamancy on the big screen.
And right before they enter the theater and turn their backs on the already stirring gossip, Akaashi pauses and Bokuto stills with him.
When they kiss it's quick and chaste. Careful to make sure it's visible, long enough to give the crowd that's screaming behind them time to soak in what it means and take as many pictures as they can.
And then it's over, and Akaashi waves over his shoulder with his left hand, his wedding ring no doubt catching the light of the millions of camera flashes.
The theater door closes behind them.
They are close enough that when Bokuto grins down at him Akaashi can see his reflection in his eyes. “I think that will give the media plenty to work with. And our agents too.”
“Plenty indeed. Now, shall we watch our movie?” Akaashi offers, and Bokuto’s smile stretches wider.
“I suppose we shall.”
