“Kate,” Haru calls, swinging his legs as he sits at the table.
“Hm?” Kate acknowledges, continue to clean the dishes from their earlier meal.
“What is love?”
Kate turns around to look at Haru, a bit surprised by the sudden question. “Love? Why do you ask?”
“Well, Ayumi loves Misaki, Natsuki loves his family, and Yuki loves you, but they all seem like different kinds of love,” Haru explains.
“Hm... well, love has many definitions, and there are many different types,” Kate muses, continuing the dishes.
“Love is so complicated!” Haru decides.
“Is it? It’s more of just something you have to discover on your own.”
“On my own?”
“You love your friends don’t you?”
“Love... my friends?” Haru questions, “Hmmm... I guess I do!”
“Then there is your answer,” Kate smiles at Haru after finishing up the dishes.
—
“Yuki,” Haru addresses.
“What is it?” Yuki asks, looking from the magazine he was reading. The two boys were sitting on the couch in the living room.
“Do you love someone?”
Yuki blushed, “L-love someone?”
“Mhm! Like how I love you, Natsuki, Akira, and Kate!”
“O-oh, you met it like that huh?” Yuki breathes a sigh of relief.
“”Like that”?”
“W-well yea, there’s a kind of, friendly love, then... uhm... r-romantic...” Yuki stutters.
“Kate did say there were different kinds! But, what is the difference?”
“Uhm, I won’t be able to explain it the best but... friendly love is like, how you feel about your friends and people you wanna be around. While romantic... that’s more like, something you feel for someone you never want to be apart from.”
“So is my love for Yuki romantic then?” Haru asks excitedly.
“W-wh-WHAT!?” Yuki blushes more then before, effectively dropping his magazine in surprise.
“Well I wanna stay with Yuki forever right, I wanna always be with Yuki, I wanna share everything with Yuki!” Haru rambles.
“H-h-hold on, t-too fast,” Yuki says, starting to feel the sensation of drowning.
“Yuki, do you not love me?” Haru asks, suddenly switching expressions to one of sadness.
“Huh,” Yuki snaps out of his panic to stare surprised at the fish alien, “N-no it’s not like I... don’t... love you...”
“You do!? What kind what kind!” Haru quickly perks up, inching closer to Yuki in excitement.
“U-uhm... it’s the same...” Yuki mumbles.
“Same? Yuki loves me romantically too? Yuki wants to stay together forever too?” Haru asks.
Yuki nods tentatively, not trusting his voice. Haru’s smile brightens in a second, and Yuki soon feels Haru crashing into him in a hug.
“I love Yuki and Yuki loves me!” Haru repeats excitedly.
“Mhm,” Yuki smiles, returning the hug. Love isn’t something you can easily explain, but at the very least it is something you can feel and find out yourself. Yuki figured it out that afternoon, as he felt the warmth of Haru in his arms.
“I love you, Haru,” Yuki mumbled, practically a whisper.
