Getting a call from Byakuya was an extremely rare occurrence. So when Kyoko received one at 10:35 AM, she was definitely more than surprised.
“Byakuya? What is it?” She asked as she picked up the phone, knowing the former heir would give her no greeting at all.
“Makoto’s sick. You should probably come pick him up. His fever’s quite high.”
Crap. How!? Makoto had seemed fine this morning! Well “fine” was more of an understatement. He was slightly more clumsy than usual, but the girl had just linked it to tiredness!
Groaning, she threw on some shoes and a jacket, and rushed out of the house and into the car.
———
When she arrived, she immediately noticed two familiar people at the door. Byakuya, and Makoto. Oddly enough, the blonde had his arm around the Ultimate Hope’s shoulder, as if trying to support him. Apparently Makoto was too fever-induced to notice how out-of-character that was for him, because he was just lying his head onto his shoulder like this happened every day.
‘Okay, if Makoto isn’t making a big deal about cuddling into Byakuya’s shoulder, that fever is definitely high.’ Kyoko thought.
“Oh, finally.” The blue eyed male exclaimed as the detective walked up. “He’s been an absolute mess. Tripping over everything, even when it’s not in his way, mixing us up with each other, and like I said, his fevers really high.”
Kyoko wished there was a way for her to check his temperature, but to do that, she would need to remove her gloves. And no way was she doing that with Byakuya standing right there. So instead, she took Makoto’s hand and held him against her body, thanked the previous Ultimate Affluent Progeny, and made her way back to the car.
“.....I’m sorry- (cough) I didn’t tell you I was sick..” The brown haired boy sounded miserable. So miserable that Kyoko couldn’t even get mad at him.
“Ugh.. It’s okay, darling. But please, don’t go to work when you’re this sick again. Anyway, stay still.”
The silver haired girl sighed as she took off her left glove and put the back of her hand against her lover’s forehead, cringing at how warm it felt. Byakuya certainly wasn’t lying when he said it was a high fever.
“... Poor thing. That must have been really uncomfortable to deal with all day. Was it like this this morning?” Kyoko doubted it. Judging by the way his symptoms were described, she would have noticed them when he had woken up.
“K-Kinda.. But they got- (cough)..really bad at like... N-nine.. AM.. T-That’s when B-Byakuya noticed..”
Kyoko nodded, taking it all in. She than sympathetically pat Makoto’s shoulder, before helping him with his seat belt and than plugging in her own.
———
“Okay, go lay down, Hun.” Kyoko said as she opened the door to their home. Makoto had his arms wrapped around his clearly upset stomach and nodded once before going to do what his partner had told him, meanwhile the girl went upstairs to go get him some extra blankets and pillows.
———
After a while, Kyoko had gathered up things she believed Makoto would probably need, medicine, a wet cloth, and some clothes (including one of her shirts) for him to change into, rather than the suit he wore for Future Foundation.
“Here Mako.” She said as she placed the cool towel against his boiling hot forehead. “Ngh..” He groaned weakly in reply, clearly not liking the way droplets of water threatened to fall down his face.
Kyoko sat down beside him and gingerly pressed it down with one hand, using the other to play with her boyfriend’s hair.
“I should probably get a thermometer.” She announced, mentally face palming for not thinking of that earlier.
Makoto gave a slow nod as a response, waiting for her to return with the device.
———
“Here. Open your mouth.” The couple both waited together for the *beep* sound, and Kyoko frowned upon really his temperature.
40°C
“Okay, We’re dealing with a pretty high fever here, but don’t worry! I know to help it.”
The last part was kind of a lie. The girl hadn’t really dealt with looking after sick people before, let alone when they were this ill.
“K-Kiri.. M-my s-stomach hurts..” The olive eyed male whined softly.
Finally, something she did know how to take care of. She knew baths helped stomachaches, and she had already been planning to draw him one.
“Kay, I’ll go draw a bath, stay here and rest.”
——— Once the bath was ready, Kyoko went back downstairs to help Makoto walk up them, seeing as he was too drowsy and ill to walk up them himself, she had to carry him all the way up them.
Once Kyoko had finally helped him get ready, she sat her lover in the tub and started to gently clean his hair, and Makoto closed his eyes and sighed happily.
After about five minutes, the detective asked; “How’s your stomach doing, Sweetie?”
“B-better.. T-Thank you..” He replied.
“It’s not a problem.”
“I... I’m ready to come out now..”
“Okay, let me help you.”
———
Once she had helped the former Ultimate Lucky Student into some sweatpants and her shirt, she gently wrapped him up in blankets and spooned him Tylenol, comfortingly rubbing his shoulder the whole time.
“Nngh.. Everything’s b-blurry..” The feverish boy muttered quietly.
“It’s okay. I promise. You’ll just be tired.”
“Do you think you could try and eat? I could probably make you some soup..” The lavender eyed girl asked.
“I-I don’t know if I c-could (cough) eat it all.. B-but I’ll t-try..” Makoto answered.
Kyoko smiled at him. “That’s all you need to do.”
———
Once she had started cooking some chicken noodle soup, the detective sat with her lover on the couch, holding him lovingly in her pale arms. The boy’s olive-y green eyes were closed, but Kyoko could tell he was wide awake, seeing as he wasn’t cuddling into her or making his usual soft snoring sounds.
“So, how are you feeling now?” She inquired, rubbing soothing circles into his back.
“W-warm.. A-and k-kinda cold at the s-same time- (cough).. M-my throat hurts p-pretty bad..”
The silver haired detective frowned but nodded. “I see. I’ll go make some tea.”
When the couple were both sat on their sofa together drinking, Kyoko decided to ask a few more questions about Makoto’s sudden fever. (And she was also curious as to how Byakuya of all people was the one waiting for her to pick him up.)
“So, how did Byakuya find out?”
“.... Probably because I kept calling him Hiro... A-and than I fell over the last th-three steps when- (cough) walking down them.. A-and than he noticed how much I was- coughing.”
“Okay, sounds like a standard fever than. I’m sure you’ll be alright..”
“....I hope so.”
However, it seemed like saying that completely jinxed it. Because almost right after saying that, Makoto learned that drinking tea on an empty stomach with a fever was not a good idea. And he retched and gagged before vomiting all over the floor, which he thanked god for in that moment, was made out of floorboards.
“Oh god- Are you okay-”
He could barely even hear the rest of what Kyoko was saying, his ears were ringing and his eyes watered up in pain as he clutched his terribly upset stomach. Apparently the same ache from earlier had came back with a vengeance.
“Makoto!? Makoto!? A-are you okay!?” Seeing his girlfriend so panicked and stressed almost made him cry. She rarely showed any emotions unless the current situation was very, very bad or dire.
“………… N……o…” He eventually muttered saplessly. His body was covered in sweat, and his gut still felt like his organs were being squeezed.
And the next thing he knew, Kyoko had knelt down Beside him, scooped him into her arms, and was holding him closely, cradling his frail body as if he were a feeble little child. (Which in that moment, he certainly felt like one.)
“Oh, darling... poor thing..”
And that was all he heard before his eyes closed again, and he fell asleep.
———
There was a strange sound, a strange sound that the little male at first couldn’t pick up on. Though he soon recognised it as wind.
It took a few seconds for his senses to properly come back. But when they did, he realised someone was calling his name, who he immediately presumed to be Kyoko again.
“Mako.? Makoto?” She was saying.
“...K-Kir-i..?”
“Are you okay? How do you feel?”
“N-not as bad as b-before.. B-but still p-pretty bad..”
“Alright, than. Well, the soups ready, but I’m assuming you really don’t wanna eat right now?” The light haired girl said.
“D-definitely not..” He answered, too tired to even move.
“Okay, that’s understandable. I’m gonna let you rest for a bit, and maybe if you start to feel a bit better, than we can try food? You haven’t eaten at all today..”
“M-maybe..”
She showed a small grin as she leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“Good. Get some rest, babe. I love you.”
I... Love... you too.”
———
Two hours later, he had started to feel a tiny bit better, and decided that he could probably eat a little, so Kyoko was sitting in a chair beside their shared bed, carefully spooning a small amount of the soup into her partner’s mouth.
“You’re doing pretty good. Think you can handle some more?”
“Y-yeah..”
“Good job, Hun.”
After Makoto has finished what could probably barley be considered a quarter of the broth, he shook his head when Kyoko offered him more and quietly said, “N-no.. D-don’t want any m-more..”
“Okay well, you ate more than I honestly expected, so I’m proud of you. Just sit in bed for a while, I think I can give you some more medicine now.”
Thank god for the medicine part. It would make things a lot more bearable than they were for Makoto right now. He despised being sick. Hence why he never told anyone in the first place. But of course Byakuya had to have noticed! And of course he had to have the most amazing observation too!”
After he was done with his mini-rant in his head, he watched as Kyoko walked back in, more Tylenol in her gloved hands.
When he was done taking the medicine, he noticed that his lover had her laptop with her, he pointed to it as if to ask; “What’s that for?” To which she replied:
“I thought we could watch a movie, it’ll make time pass, and I’m sure it’ll help make you feel a little better.”
“Probably, yeah.”
So, that was settled. The two sat in their room for the rest of the day, snuggled up in blankets together and binging as many mystery movies as they possibly could. And Kyoko was right, because Makoto certainly was starting to get better.
Perhaps it wasn’t such a terrible, horrible sick-day after all.
