Chapter Text

“This is stupid.”

“Yer face’s stupid. Move your thumb a bit.”

“How old are you again, Ikishima?”

“Dunno, but yer mom didn’t care when I brought her to Ground Pound Town last night. C’mere, dammit!”

Sayaka sighed. For the umpteenth time, she let Ikishima reposition her elbow on the meeting table of the Student Council lounge. She pretended not to see the fact that she kept looking for a position to give her the advantage.

“You’re trying to cheat even now. You’re so cheap...”

“I don’t know why you’re being so serious about this.”

“This is serious business, I’m a serious person.”

“Right. But that fast food is open every day, all day long. You can go there whenever you want, why do I have to come along?”

“You can be on top on your class and still be as dumb as a hose, huh?”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Aight, so, we’re all good.”

Ikishima eyed the positions of their arms on the table one last time. Sayaka couldn’t tell which of their hands had started to sweat first, but they’d been in this position for long enough to warrant a grimace.

“Lemme repeat the wagers,” said Ikishima.

“You’re not a dealer, Ikishima. We’re playing arm-wrestling, not poker.”

“Hush! As I was saying: if you win I won’t carry my gun around for five days.”

“For a week , I said.“

“Aight, aight, a week , dammit! But if I win, you come to have dinner at Burger Queen with me. Deal?”

“I can already feel the heart-burn.”

“You’ll love it.”

“I don’t doubt it.”

As she spoke, Sayaka started to test the other’s grip. She knew that in order to win in a game like this, strength wasn’t always the main advantage. All she had to do was bring her weight a bit forward and get ready to pull Ikishima’s arm towards herself.

She shifted on her seat.

“All good?” said Ikishima.

“Yes.”

“Ready?"

“Let’s make this quick, please.”

“Eager huh? Nice. Hope you’re ready for the best date ever.”

“The best— Wait, wha—“

Sayaka’s careful planning went to ashes as Midari’s arm pushed against her with incredible speed and a lot of grunting. When her knuckles knocked on the wood of the table she was still too befuddled to realize it .

“And the crowd goes wild!” bellowed Ikishima, jumping to her feet.

“Wait, a date?” stammered Sayaka under warm cheeks, “I didn’t— You—“

Midari’s only eye glimmered as she grinned at her.

“A deal’s a deal. I’ll be waiting for you by the gate, after school. Make sure I’ll find you there! If you try to ditch me I’ll be looking for you all over the place, ya hear me?”

She was already starting to leave, throwing a hand in the air to say her goodbyes.

“W-Wait, Ikishima, where—“

The door shut behind her.

As her ears ringed with its bang, Sayaka sighed and got up.

She started making herself some tea. As she heated up the water, she looked out of the window, shaking her head.

She waited for her cheeks to cool down.

“Jerk,” she muttered. “Of course I’ll be there.”
