"I'll be swimming with Rin in Paris," Nanase tells him.
Sousuke swallows down an unchewed bite of mackerel.
"Great," he replies measuredly. "I'll cheer for Rin."
Later that week, he sees them both on NHK. Rin on a primetime ad for toothpaste. Followed by a close-up shot of Nanase stretching on the pool mat, his physique sharpened in ultra-HD, the entire country's pearls clutched now between his teeth.
He doesn't advance. Though all it means is that Sousuke will see him sooner. In true Nanase-fashion, even a closing ceremony for the Summer Olympics doesn't keep him from flying home early.
