Work Text:
Kim woke up with a start and looked around the dark empty living room. She looked over at the clock on the wall and realized Adam had gone to put Makayla to bed over forty-five minutes ago and still hadn’t come out of her bedroom. Kim mustered up all her strength to hoist her body off of the chair and steady her aching body on the arm of the couch that had been turned into a makeshift bed that Adam had been occupying for the past month, since he had stepped up and took on the role as Makayla’s guardian since she had been recovering in the hospital after being kidnapped and shot during a case. She hated feeling like she had to be taken care of but it was so nice to have another set of hands around with Makayla, so she didn’t put up a fight after he refused to leave the day he brought her home from the hospital.
She slowly crept down the hallway and as she got closer to Makayla’s bedroom door she could hear giggles and a high-pitched male voice softly through the closed door. She leaned against the doorframe outside and listened to the conversation happening on the other side.
“Adam, Princess Petunia doesn’t sound like that. She has a British accent, we’ve been over this.”
“Oh I’m sorry, let me try again. Queen Makayla, may I please have another cup of tea with two sugars and a biscuit on the side.” Adam said in the worst British accent Kim had ever heard.
Kim quietly opens the door ajar not to disturb the scene going on and peaks inside to see Adam sitting at Makayla’s pink play table, which had been completely lifted off the ground by his legs squished under it. He was holding Makayla’s favorite stuffed animal, her blue platypus, in one hand and a barbie whose name was apparently Princess Petunia in the other, while wearing a diamond encrusted tiara and a pink sparkly tutu over his black out gear, that he hadn’t gotten a chance to take off yet after getting home late from working a case. Makayla, opposite Adam, was in her princess nightgown with a matching tiara and tutu, holding a teddy bear, her laughter filling the room after what Adam had just said.
“What on earth are you two doing? Makayla you were supposed to be in bed 45 minutes ago! You have school tomorrow!” Kim said while giving Adam a “you’re in trouble” glance trying to hold back laughter at the scene in front of her.
“Adam promised me a tea party today! Since he was out late catching the bad people we couldn’t have our tea party earlier, we had to reschedule for right now.” Makayla said, taking a sip out of her air filled teacup.
“Kim’s right, kiddo, it’s time for you to get some sleep.” Adam said, scooping her up out of the chair and swinging her over his back like a sack of potatoes, plopping her onto the bed, which made Makayla erupt into another fit of giggles.
Kim walked over to the bed and placed her stuffed platypus into Makayla’s arms as Adam pulled the covers up and tucked her in. Adam walked to the door as he watched Kim place a soft kiss on Makayla’s forehead, rubbing her back before getting up and joining Adam at the door.
“Goodnight bear, I love you, see you in the morning.” Kim said and Adam gave a little wave, as she turned on her nightlight and shut the door closed.
“You know I can’t say “no” to her. She gets these little puppy dog eyes and I swear she knows that she has me wrapped around her little finger and can get anything-” Adam begins to ramble as Kim turns around to face him.
“I'm not mad. You’re lucky I have a thing for British accents.” Kim replied, cutting off his rambling as a shy smile crept about her face.
Adam burst out laughing, as his hand found the small of her back and started to help her walk back out into the living room, “Well then, now that I know that, I’ll definitely have to ask Princess Petunia for some pointers.”
