Work Text:

A soft breeze rustled Moon's hair as she padded along the beach with her sandals in hand. The sun was just starting to set, painting Alola's gorgeous turquoise waters vibrant oranges and pinks. Kids were playing in the surf, splashing around, and darting after flocks of Wingul with family Pokémon at their heels. Parents and couples were spread out under umbrellas, enjoying the cooler weather, with drinks and books.

All in all it was peaceful ending to her final night in Alola. Tomorrow, she'd be off to wherever the wind took her.

After five years of her serving as the region's champion she'd decided it was time to move on. She'd done her time and was going to pass the title off to Hau - who, honestly, deserved it more than she did.

Moon sighed, stopping to let the surf wash over her feet, as she stared out over the ocean. She would miss Alola. It's been her home, more than Kanto ever was, and as much as it hurt to leave it, it was time. There was no place for her here anymore. Nothing here for her that she hadn't already done.

She has no idea how long she ends up standing there, just watching the sunset, but she's brought back to reality by arms snaking around her waist.

"Was wondering where you went." Gladion mumbles, hugging her to him, his chest a warm, solid, comfort against her back.

"I-I just.. needed to take a walk. Say good-bye." Moon whispers, threading her fingers through his. Her eyes are starting to burn with unshed tears. Gladion's arms tighten around her and now she really wants to cry.

"I understand. It's hard to believe we're leaving."

Moon just nods. Her throat clogged with emotion. The sun dips beneath the horizon, the ocean waves go dark, and as the first few stars start to appear, Moon allows herself to cry.

Notes:

This is a bit of a bittersweet little ficlet in the way this is my final fic for this fandom. I've just lost all passion for it and I wish I hadn't but I have. So this a fond farewell to a ship near and dear to my heart and a game I've loved for so very long.
