“Psst…Olaf!”
Olaf opened his eyes, waking from visions of a summer picnic with his little brothers.
“Yeah?”
“Happy birthday!”
“To…wait, it’s my birthday?” Olaf got up, startled. He knew that Anna and Elsa had birthdays, but he hadn’t thought of having one himself before.
“Well, you first came to life four years ago. I think that would be considered a birthday,” Anna replied, pulling the cold bedsheets off of Olaf’s round body. “I’m sorry Elsa and I didn’t think of it before, but we figured we could start celebrating it now!”
“Ooh! But…too bad she isn’t here for it.” Olaf lowered his head sadly.
“Well actually…” Elsa startled him, appearing from the doorway.
“Elsa! You’re here!” Olaf got up excitedly to say hello to Elsa.
“I could never miss your birthday, Olaf, even if I’m not always here anymore.” Elsa knelt down and gave him a warm hug. “Oh, and I’ve brought along one of your friends.” The sound of pattering feet and a little croak followed as Bruni climbed to Elsa’s shoulder and proceeded to jump onto Olaf’s head.
“Well, we’ve got a lot planned, so let’s get going!” Anna remarked cheerfully. They all headed out of the castle to meet with Kristoff and Sven and begin the festivities.
The entire kingdom had been excited to celebrate the birthday of the fun-loving, friendly snowman. They spent the day dancing and singing, and Olaf received many carrots and new books to read. There had even been large rounds of trivia in the courtyard for a few hours, and Olaf was the only one who knew most of the answers.
As the sun set, the unconventional family went back into the castle to play a few more games. First up was charades, a game night tradition. Olaf and Elsa were a team this time, and they won by a few points against Anna and Kristoff. After that, they played a new favorite of Olaf’s, hide-and-seek.
Olaf was getting better at playing hide-and-seek, but he had a habit of always hiding in the same places. Anna and Kristoff could find him rather quickly, and Elsa was starting to. Now, Olaf and Bruni were creeping around the castle during the final round.
“We need to find a really good spot so they don’t find us this time,” Olaf whispered. Bruni simply responded with a lick of his eyeball.
They were nearing the library. “Maybe we can hide somewhere in here!” Olaf walked in. “Bruni, what do you think?” Suddenly he spotted a flash of blue as the little salamander jumped onto the statue of Nokk. It fell down with a grinding sound to reveal a passageway.
“Oh, of course! The secret library! How did you know about it?” Olaf exclaimed. The two walked down the dark hall, guided by Bruni’s small flame.
About thirty minutes passed, and Anna had long found everyone except Olaf. “I would’ve usually found him by now,” she worried, peering through each empty room.
“Um, Anna? I think he’s more hidden than we thought.” Elsa motioned to the library, where they could see the dark passageway. The two sisters looked at each other and ventured down.
To their relief, he was inside and reading one of the books he had found. “There you are!” Anna exclaimed. “But how did you get in here?”
“Bruni jumped on the statue of Nokk,” Olaf replied. “Sorry, I’m in the middle of a good book.”
“Olaf, we were playing hide-and-seek,” Elsa mentioned. “Did you forget?”
“Oh,” the snowman remarked. “I did.”
“What book are you reading?” Anna asked.
“I think it’s called The Little Mermaid,” said Olaf, looking at the cover.
“Oh, that was one of Mother and Father’s favorite books!” Elsa had a wistful look on her face. “This is the copy that I rewrote for them, too.”
“I forgot about this room and how many books are in here,” Olaf remarked, gazing at the walls. “I wish I could read them all, but I can’t get in without help.”
“Oh Olaf,” Anna chuckled. “You can always ask me if you want to come in here and read! I’d be happy to let you in.”
“Really?” She nodded. “Oh, thank you so much!” he cheered, hugging both sisters tightly. “This has been the best birthday ever.”
