Makeup

Summary:

Yuuji and Nobara only recently started dating, and things are still a bit awkward between them. But when Nobara invites him over for an impromptu spa day, Yuuji learns a lot more about her than he ever thought possible.

Notes:

I wanted to write more Yuuji/Nobara interactions that weren't purely from a comedic perspective, so here we are! I still included some jokes, but I kept both of them in-character as best as possible. It's very fluffy and cute, and I enjoyed writing from Yuuji's POV a lot - he’s so damn wholesome!

Minor, minor spoilers for anime-onlies about the name of one of Yuuji's old classmates. But it's so insignificant that I don't really think it's a spoiler at all...

Please enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Yuuji was uncharacteristically bored. It was a rare weekend without any missions for the first-years, but he didn’t know what he wanted to do with this newfound freedom. It was only Friday evening and he still had two more entire days ahead of him. He supposed he could go to the training grounds, but it felt kind of weird to go there after the sun had gone down - especially considering that it was completely outdoors without any source of artificial light.

He pulled out his phone again and browsed the nearby movie theaters to see what was out, but nothing particularly interested him; not even the indie theaters that only showcased foreign films had anything good. Yuuji frowned and tapped his thumb on the side of his phone in contemplation, thinking through his options.

Ah. Nobara! His face lit up before he subsequently remembered that she’d said she was having a personal, private, alone, no-boys-allowed spa day in her room. And Megumi had yet to reply to his two dozen texts from a few hours ago, so he figured that was a no-go as well.

Yuuji groaned loudly and dramatically, flopping onto his bed belly-first so his face slammed into the pillow. He opened his eyes and stared into the darkness as he idly opened and closed his mouth against the fabric, forming a wet spot of drool on the pillowcase (he could faintly hear the spirit of Nobara yelling at him for being a gross, disgusting teenage boy). Ah, but she really wasn’t that bad. She wasn’t bad at all.

His face reddened in embarrassment despite the fact that he was alone and these were just his thoughts - they weren’t even bad thoughts! But whenever he reminisced about last week and how Nobara had cornered him to say that she wanted to try dating (dating him!), he couldn’t combat the flush in his cheeks. It had been so unexpected, and even Megumi had looked surprised when Yuuji had told him what happened.

He’d had a bit of a crush on Nobara for a while. Honestly, when he saw her take out that curse on the first day they met, he’d realized that she was something special. But it hadn’t formed into a full-blown crush until after he’d gotten back from his supposed death and reconvened with her and Megumi. She’d been pissed the hell off for a few days, but once she’d finally gotten over her anger at being duped by an “idiot with rocks for brains”, she began spending more time with him.

Truth be told, Yuuji never thought he had a chance. This was Nobara. She was so fearless and confident in herself that he’d just assumed she would never look his direction twice in any romantic way - she had sighed upon seeing his face at their first meeting! And yet…

His phone buzzed, and Yuuji greedily welcomed the distraction as he raised his head just enough to peek at the screen. But he instantly flew up into a kneeling position when he realized that it was Nobara herself who’d just texted him. Did she have mind-reading powers?!

Kugisaki: Oi, I could hear you sigh from my room. It’s disturbing my peace.

Oh, no. He’d become a nuisance again. He barely held back another sigh as he hit himself in the head, mentally scolding himself. Nobara had already been someone he didn’t want to piss off before, but now that they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend, he had to try ten times as hard to present himself well. What if she finally realized how far out of his league she was and broke things off? Licking his lips nervously, Yuuji’s thumbs hovered over the digital keyboard for a few seconds before deciding on a suitable response.

Kugisaki-sama! I apologize!

It was simple and to the point, but he thought he got the point across. A few seconds after he hit send, he heard something coming from the direction of her room: a laugh. Oh. His face reddened again as the image of her laughing, carefree face conjured itself in his mind’s eye. No, thoughts, get out! But then his phone buzzed again.

Kugisaki: You’re so extra sometimes. Come on over, I’m bored.

His heart nearly stopped at that. She wanted him to come over? To her room? It wasn’t that he was thinking anything untoward - no, he legitimately wasn’t - but wasn’t she busy with her spa day? Did she really not mind?

Are you sure? Aren’t you doing some spa stuff?

Yuuji barely corrected his text as it tried to autocorrect spa to sparring. It was true that he used the word sparring much more often than spa, but come on, phone! He was trying to show that he remembered her plans like the good boyfriend he was!

Kugisaki: Dummy, I wouldn’t have asked otherwise. COME OVER.

Well, she’d answered only one of his questions - but he supposed it was the most pressing one. He replied with a smiling emoji before standing up, quickly running his fingers through his hair in case it had gotten matted down awkwardly at some point. He rushed for the door before pausing, realizing he was just dressed in some sweatpants and a tank top. Would she be expecting him to be fancy?

His mind raced through the mental images about male fashion he’d recently forced himself to look at: fitted pants, neutral shades with pops of color, long-sleeves with the cuffs slightly rolled up. It was all so varied and hard to remember, and his brain felt like it was short-circuiting as he ran to his closet and opened it up. Nothing looked particularly great, and as the seconds passed without any new ideas coming to his mind, Yuuji decided to just throw on a yellow hoodie. Those were sometimes considered cool, right?

As well-dressed as he was ever going to be when only given a moment’s notice to get ready, Yuuji sprinted back to his door and pushed it open. But he nearly ran into Megumi in the process, who’d been poised right outside the door with his hand raised up in a fist to knock.

“O-Oh! Fushiguro!” Yuuji stammered out. “What’s up?!”

“Uh…” The spiky-haired boy replied, raising an eyebrow at Yuuji’s hectic manner of speech. “Didn’t you want me to help you with the history of the Kamo clan?”

“O-Oh!” Yuuji repeated himself as he suddenly realized that Megumi hadn’t completely ignored his texts. He was caught between a rock and a hard place, and his fingers anxiously twitched as he contemplated on what to do. He couldn’t stand up Nobara after she’d invited him over, but wouldn’t Megumi also get offended if he blew off his offer to help? What the hell was he supposed to do?!

But luckily for him, Megumi was far more insightful than Yuuji ever realized. Closing his eyes and letting out a sigh, Megumi delicately asked, “Is this about Kugisaki?”

“Um! Yes! I’m supposed to meet her!” He said in short, staccatoed sentences. Megumi just nodded and immediately began walking back to his room, not even bothering to reopen his eyes. Yuuji promptly closed the door and called out after him, “Hey! Where are you going?”

“She takes precedence, Itadori - isn’t she your girlfriend? We can go over this another time.” Megumi’s words weren’t laced with malice or anything. In fact, he almost sounded relieved that he wouldn’t have to try teaching Yuuji something potentially beyond his brain’s capacity level. In their previous study sessions, whenever Yuuji had tried to remember words from history books, they always became a scrambled mess in his mind. He could remember random dates and names, but there was no way for him to combine them together in any meaningful way.

Megumi had already entered his room and closed his door before Yuuji could give a response, but he decided to text Megumi a quick thanks anyways as he walked to Nobara’s. He was still getting used to this whole relationship thing, and maybe it would be worth it to ask Megumi for advice on how to balance things. After all, Megumi was the smartest one out of the three first-years, wasn’t he? So he would know about everything there was to know?

Yuuji slipped his phone into the front pocket of his hoodie and knocked on Nobara’s door, teetering back and forth on the balls of his feet apprehensively. He really didn’t have a reason to be so nervous, seeing as he’d hung out with Nobara alone before. But it just felt so different this past week. Girlfriend. She was his girlfriend - it still didn’t feel real.

“It’s unlocked!” Her voice rang out from inside. Sucking in a deep, calming breath, Yuuji pulled the door open and stepped inside.

He was immediately met with the aroma of a dozen scented candles and incense jars, nearly staggering backwards at the sudden influx of floral smells in his nostrils. But it wasn’t an unpleasant smell; it had just been unexpected. Kugisaki immediately barked at him from the middle of the room, “Close the door!”

He did so with such intensity that it slammed with enough force to shake the frame. He cringed - waiting for Nobara to yell at him for ruining her peace and her room’s structural integrity - but she never reprimanded him. She was sitting cross-legged on the floor with her back to him, looking at herself in a small, handheld mirror as she applied something on her face. Her hair was pulled back in a small ponytail, and it was one of the few times he’d seen her style it in such a way.

“Um, hey,” he said awkwardly, not knowing if he should stay back or not. What were all of those balms and containers for? Some were white, some were green, and one of them even looked to be black.

“Hey yourself,” she replied. He could see part of her face in the mirror as her eyes flickered over to him through the reflection. “Why are you standing there? The action’s over here.”

He didn’t know what to say to that, so he just headed over and sat down next to her. Yuuji was glad to see that she was also dressed pretty casually, clad in some loose, gray pants and an oversized shirt. She angled herself towards him, and Yuuji was taken aback when realized that her entire face was covered with a thin layer of some green substance. “Whoa, you’re like Shrek.”

It came out of his mouth before he could stop it, and he instantly blanched. But Nobara was truly in the best mood he’d ever seen her in, because she didn’t even narrow her eyes at him. She just let out a light chuckle and nudged his shoulder with her own, her hands busy holding the mirror and applying the strange cream.

“Wow, thanks. It’s actually pretty effective.”

“What does it do?”

Only now did she look offended. Nobara turned to fully face Yuuji - putting the mirror down in her lap as if getting ready to give him a long lecture. Her characteristic expression was back due to his simple question, but Yuuji didn’t understand what he said wrong just now. “Have you never used one of these before? How is your skin so clear?”

“I don’t know?” He replied back in a question, scratching his neck. “I don’t really do anything…”

“Ugh! Seriously?! That’s so unfair!” Nobara lamented. Yuuji held back the instinct to lean away, knowing now that when she used that tone, she wasn’t actually mad at him - she was mad at the world and all of its misgivings. But was she jealous of his… skin? He’d never really thought about his appearance before, but he supposed he’d also never had an issue with it.

“Your skin always looks good, though,” he said in a somewhat confused tone. He couldn’t recall an instance where she’d had a pimple or even a red mark on her face. No, in all the times he’d ever seen her, her skin had been as clear as any model’s.

“That’s because I wear makeup,” she said with a sigh, turning away and bringing the mirror back up so she could apply the green cream again. “My skin’s been breaking out worse than usual lately, and I’m trying everything I can to combat it. But these damn products aren’t doing a thing! This is the only one that seems to work, but even then, it just makes my healthy skin clearer - it doesn’t help with the acne.”

It was a much longer response than Yuuji was expecting, and to be honest, he was shocked to hear that Nobara had trouble with her skin. He’d never really noticed the fact that she wore makeup, and he just kind of assumed it was how her face naturally looked. But now that he thought about it, Nobara would often look at her face in her phone’s camera and go to bathrooms to “freshen up” after missions. She must’ve always been spending a lot of time presenting herself to the world, and Yuuji suddenly felt like a bit of a dick that he’d never noticed.

“Oh…” He said lamely, looking at the floor and twiddling his thumbs. “Sorry that I never noticed.”

She scoffed and finished applying the cream, washing off her hands with some cloth and lotion afterwards. “That’s kind of the point of makeup: to enhance your features and hide your imperfections. You don’t need to apologize for not knowing about my unfortunate skin.”

“No, I mean sorry that I never noticed that you, uh, wear makeup,” he clarified. At that, she turned to face him head-on again. She squinted her eyes as if to make sure he wasn’t making a crappy joke, and this time Yuuji couldn’t help but scoot a few centimeters away due to the scary glance. But she soon realized that he was telling the truth, and Nobara shook her head - completely appalled.

“Wow. Really? You didn’t know? You thought I looked that good just naturally?”

“U-Um!” He stammered, wishing desperately that his face would stop turning so red. “I-I just never thought about it! I’ve never seen you apply anything!”

“Hmm, I guess that’s true. I don’t really feel comfortable doing that in public.” She put a finger to her lips in deep contemplation, continuing to speak her thoughts aloud as she psychoanalyzed him. “And you didn’t grow up around any girls, so you were never really exposed to these types of things. You’re the epitome of a teenage boy.”

“Hey! I know better than to use those awful-smelling body sprays! And I wear deodorant!” He instantly defended himself - his bashfulness forgotten. But it seemed like he had only somehow reaffirmed her point as she nodded to herself, pointing a finger gun at him as she gave a smile.

“Teenage boy.”

He didn’t know how to defend himself anymore (what did she even mean by that?), so he decided to just switch the topic away from himself. “Well, I thought that since Maki doesn’t wear makeup, maybe you didn’t either.”

“Itadori,” she said while stifling a giggle, “Maki also wears makeup.”

“WHAT?! MAKI DOES TOO?!” Megumi could probably hear him from how loudly he exclaimed that in surprise, and he instantly clamped a hand over his mouth. But the second-years’ dorms were a few buildings down, so unless he was extraordinarily unlucky, he doubted Maki would’ve heard him as well. That would be a very, very awkward thing to try and explain.

“Oh, my God, you’re absolutely clueless,” Nobara said with obvious mirth in her voice. She wiped at her eyes as she chuckled, but Yuuji was still too dumbfounded to feel offended that he was being laughed at.

“W-What about Utahime-sensei?!”

“Yep. Makeup.”

“Mai?!”

“Even more than Maki.”

“That broom girl!”

“Uh-huh.”

“Gojo-sensei...?” At that, Nobara rolled her eyes and looked to the heavens.

“That man is just something else entirely. Don’t think about it too much.”

“O-Okay,” he stammered, but his head was still reeling with this new information.

As the seconds passed, Nobara’s humor died down a bit and she sighed a little. He barely caught her sentence as she quietly muttered underneath her breath, “Nishimiya wasn’t completely wrong…”

“Hm? Isn’t that the broom girl?” She seemed startled that he’d heard her, and Nobara suddenly looked as though she were deducing the pros and cons of telling him the truth about her statement. The cream on her face was nearly completely dry by the time she finally sighed again and relented - telling him her real thoughts as she stared at the floor.

“Yeah, that’s her. At the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event, she was telling me how women in the jujutsu world are expected to not just excel in their marks and talents, but that they needed to look and act perfect, too. I kind of blew her off because she was being a know-it-all about the whole thing, but she’s really not wrong.”

Yuuji frowned, realizing there were a lot of things that he’d never even considered before today.  At his previous schools, he’d never had any particularly close friends - much less girl ones - and his grandpa wasn’t exactly the paradigm for giving insights about the opposite sex’s societal struggles. But he remembered telling those old classmates of his how he admired Ozawa, and how they’d immediately ridiculed her just because she was overweight. He hadn’t given the interaction any further thought after he’d left the classroom, but was that the kind of thing girls were always dealing with?

“Huh.” It was all he could say, his mind still whirling as he contemplated the new information. Nobara gave him a funny look, but she let him stew in silence for a bit as she examined the dried product on her face. Yuuji had honestly never realized that girls were held to higher standards, but although some men did wear makeup and put a lot of effort into fashion, advertising was mostly directed towards women. Why? He didn’t get it.

Maybe he would look more into this - he was thoroughly confused, but it also felt as if he’d stumbled upon some secret he wasn’t supposed to know. Yeah, he’d find some article or something once he was back in his room. He already didn’t have plans for the weekend, and it seemed like a good way to occupy his time.

“Ah, I didn’t mean to bring the mood down,” Nobara finally spoke after nearly a minute of silence. Yuuji smiled at her, but it was true that he wasn’t as jovial as earlier. He didn’t like feeling useless when there were things to be done, but what could he do here?

“Well, I’m the jerk who didn’t realize there were issues like this,” he replied with a shrug. Nobara chuckled again at that, and she leaned over to ruffle his hair (he managed to keep his flush down this time).

“Aw, don’t take it too personally - you’re only fifteen. And, well, you’re not the smartest.” Yuuji pouted at the jab, but it wasn’t said with any force behind her words. She put down the mirror for the last time and redid her small ponytail as she said with a surprising amount of benignity, “Honestly, it’s just nice that you care. Some people might just dismiss it and say it’s not true.”

“I wouldn’t do that!” He replied immediately.

Nobara finished her ponytail - her hair just barely long enough to put it in one - and nodded at him. “Yup. I know.”

He thought it might be a compliment, but Yuuji didn’t want to assume things. Still, he was beginning to feel more energized now. Yuuji shifted so he was on his knees and he pointed his finger at her dramatically as he declared, “If you ever want to stick it to the system, I’ll be behind you the whole way! I’ll make picket signs and show people that you’re in the right!”

“Oh, God,” she shuddered at the thought. “That’s unnecessary.”

“I want to help!”

“Itadori… Don’t get it mixed up.” It sounded as if she were about to say something serious again, so Yuuji stopped his antics and listened closely. “I don’t wear makeup or dress nicely for other people - I do it for myself. I’m not being forced to do this by some invisible boogieman, so don’t stress about it.”

Well, it certainly made sense that Nobara wouldn’t do something like this for the sake of someone else. It was good to know she still enjoyed it, even if it might have been expected of her by others. Yuuji suddenly felt as if he’d just learned more in the few minutes of talking to Nobara than he would’ve with Megumi’s long study session. The realization made him laugh out loud, and Nobara cocked an eyebrow and asked, “What? What is it?”

“I was just thinking that I definitely learned more here than I would’ve with Fushiguro.”

“Oh, Fushiguro… Were you supposed to study with him?”

“Yeah, but I came here instead.” He decided not to mention that he’d needed some prompting by the other boy to do so. But Nobara just leaned back and stretched her legs in front of her as she rested on her elbows, lying partially on the floor as she began to good-naturedly diss their friend.

“He’s an awful teacher! He thinks we’re smart alecks like him, so he explains things like he would to a genius! And he has the audacity to get annoyed that we don’t understand what he’s talking about!”

“Yeah!” Yuuji agreed, coming to the wrong conclusion that it was actually Megumi who was to blame for his failing grades. “It’s his fault I can’t remember things! He sets me up with bad habits and he uses too big of words to describe things!”

They continued to badmouth Megumi for a little bit (although Yuuji eventually agreed that it was still a good idea to continue getting help from him). It wasn’t until a timer on Nobara’s phone went off that she startled and remembered she was trying to do spa-related things.

“Oh, I need to wash this off now. Just a second.” Yuuji stayed put as Nobara walked over to a corner of her room: occupied by a large, metal basin. It made his eyebrows furrow in confusion, because as far as he knew, that wasn’t usually in her room.

“Have you always had that?” He decided to ask. Nobara shook her head as she leaned over it, cupping some water in her hands.

“No, I took it from the storage room - don’t tell anyone.”

“My lips are sealed.”

Satisfied with his response, the room was soon filled with the sounds of splashing water as Nobara washed the product off of her face. Yuuji looked at his phone as he waited for her to finish, stifling a small laugh when he realized that Megumi had texted him earlier.

Fushiguro: What was that about Maki?

Yuuji considered telling him the truth, but since Megumi had a sister, he was probably more well-versed in things like makeup. But what could he say that would make sense? He didn’t mind coming off as an idiot, but he didn’t want to look ignorant.

Did you know that Maki also prefers rice over bread?!?!?!

There. Satisfied, Yuuji smiled to himself and looked up from his phone when he heard Nobara approaching. She was still dabbing at her face with a small, white towel as she sat back down across from him. He eagerly began to say, “Hey! You’ll never guess what-”

But then she pulled the towel away, and Yuuji’s breath hitched in his throat. Oh. Oh. She looked different, and as his brain stuttered, he realized she wasn’t wearing any makeup. The hair framing her face was wet, there were spots of red on her forehead, chin, and cheeks, she had noticeable dark circles under her eyes, and her lips looked less shiny than usual. He blinked a few times, feeling as if he were truly seeing her for the first time. Whoa...

“Um? Hello? I hope you’re not about to say something stupid,” Nobara said, her eyes squinting at him. Yuuji realized that she had taken his stunned silence the wrong way, and not wanting to offend her, he sought to clarify himself.

“N-No! Um! You… You look… Really good!” He stammered through the compliment, not even trying to contain the blush that immediately rose to his neck and face. She really was beautiful, and right now he couldn’t stop staring at her.

Nobara was taken aback, clearly not expecting that response. Her lips twitched and she opened her mouth to say something, but she closed it again a second later. Unusually flustered, Nobara nervously pulled her hair from the ponytail and let it tumble down as she stared at the ceiling. Yuuji was still examining all of her features, so he didn’t miss the new redness that rose in her cheeks; it was the first time he’d ever seen her visibly embarrassed.

“Thanks…” She murmured after a few seconds of ceiling-staring. “I don’t think anyone’s ever said something like that when I look like this.”

Yuuji couldn’t understand how others couldn’t see her like he did. He’d never been this awestruck before, and he was suddenly filled with such a rush of desire to show her his affection that he knocked over a couple jars of incense in his scramble to get to his knees. Nobara opened her mouth angrily upon seeing the mess he’d made, but she froze when he leaned forward and grabbed the sides of her face: stopping only a few centimeters away.

“U-Um…!” She said, her eyes wide and unable to look away from his own. Yuuji studied her for another second before he closed his eyes and tilted his head, softly pressing his lips against hers. They had kissed a couple of times already in the past week, but it had always been somewhat awkward and forced. This felt different. This felt right.

Nobara stiffened at first, unsure how to process the sudden changes. But when Yuuji began to move his thumbs back and forth to lightly trace her cheekbones, she relaxed. Her own lips began to move as she placed one hand on his face, the other lightly grazing the back of his neck just below the shaved portion of his hair. The feeling of her fingertips caressing his sensitive skin made him shiver, and he parted his lips a bit more to deepen the kiss.

She followed his movements, content to let him take the lead on this. Yuuji inhaled loudly through his nose after a few seconds, realizing that he’d been forgetting to breathe. But getting enough air in his lungs didn’t feel as important as being with Nobara - showing her how much he cared for her. So even though he was getting a little light-headed, he didn’t pull away.

The kiss was sweet and chaste, both of them still inexperienced and wanting to take things slowly. Nobara hummed as she moved her hand from his neck to his hair, gripping it lightly between her fingers. The action made Yuuji’s entire body twitch, and he instinctively opened his eyes and angled his head downward as he finally pulled away from her. Their foreheads were pressed together, and Yuuji could tell that Nobara was panting as heavily as he was in the aftermath. Suddenly too embarrassed to look her in the eyes, he stared at the ground as Nobara lowered her hands to rest them on his shoulders.

His mind felt more clear after a few seconds of rest, but he could still feel her lips on his. Wow. That had been… something else. He also dropped his hands from her face as he scooted backwards, continuing to stare at the ground. But he was still close enough to easily hear her quiet laugh.

“Well, that was, um, nice,” she said simply.

“Mhm,” he jerked his head up and down, deciding to finally meet her gaze again now that they were further away from one another. She was staring at him with an expression he’d never seen on her before, her eyes slightly narrowed with something that wasn’t anger. Was it... adoration? When he swallowed and touched his lips with his index finger, she laughed a bit louder.

“Shocked into silence, huh?” She teased him, her earlier awkwardness gone as she latched onto an easy way to distract herself from her own feelings. Yuuji shook his head and forced himself to fully clear his mind, lowering his hand when he registered what he was doing.

“Just a little. Hey, Kugisaki…” But when she realized he was about to say something romantic again, she rolled her eyes and thrusted her open palm in front of her: a gesture that indicated he should stop talking.

“If this night gets any more sappy, I’m going to kill myself. So save it for next time, lover boy.”

Yuuji chuckled at that, running a hand through his hair as he acquiesced and changed the topic. “Fine, fine. But is your spa day done? Do you want to do something else?”

“Hmm…” Nobara looked around at all of the things she’d prepared (and Yuuji took the time to fix the jars he’d accidentally knocked over earlier), and she smiled as she settled upon a decision. “I know! Let’s have you try out the face mask!”

Yuuji scrunched his nose at that, remembering the green product. “Are you just trying to make me look like Shrek, too?”

She threw one of the jars of incense at him, and Yuuji barely caught it before it hit his nose. “Oi! I know it’s green, but it works wonders!”

“Alright…” Honestly, Yuuji was a little curious to see how it felt. He’d never used any products for his skin before, and from the way it looked like Nobara’s own skin was glowing, maybe it’d be something he enjoyed. But he doubted he would ever have the patience to work something like this into his daily routine; it was better to spend that extra time reading manga or catching up on new movies.

“Awesome! With how smooth your skin already is, it’s going to be great!”

And so they spent much of the rest of the night trying different products on Yuuji. His face felt tight and strangely warm after she’d tested everything she wanted to, but she assured him that that’s how you knew it was working. And afterwards, when she showed him his reflection in the mirror, he couldn’t deny that his face looked a lot more shiny.

They didn’t talk about anything serious for the rest of the night, going back to their usual dynamics: Nobara scolding him for his dumb antics, and Yuuji never learning from them. But they could both tell that something had changed between them - something good. And at times, he would catch Nobara just smiling at him for no particular reason. He never called her out on it (and she would only deny it, anyways), but it made his heart beat a bit faster each time he noticed.

It wasn’t until they were both yawning more than they were talking that they finally decided it was time to say goodnight. Yuuji stood up and stretched his arms over his head, not able to hold back his hundredth yawn for the night as he eased her door open. “‘Night, Kugisaki.”

“Goodnight, Itadori.”

He turned around once he was in the hallway, grinning conspiratorially as she looked up at him with tired eyes. But when he leaned down to try and quickly kiss her again, she near-instantaneously slammed the door in his face. Yuuji laughed aloud at that, realizing that she truly did have a limit on how sappy she’d allow things to get in one day. Oh well. It was just one of the things he really liked about her.

When he returned to his room and flopped onto his bed to finally go to sleep, Yuuji found that it was hard to stop smiling. It really had been one of the best days he’d had in a long, long time. He pulled the comforter up to his chin and laid himself in a comfortable position, hoping that days like these would never come to an end.

Notes:

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed it.

I realized while editing that I use “kind of”, “a bit”, and “really” a lot while writing from Yuuji’s POV. I guess I subconsciously think he doesn’t use many absolutes LOL.
