The afterlife is basically life

Summary:

It's an afterlife (basically) for people of all religions/belief systems where they become what their belief system entails (ex: christians/angels or devils). If they are atheistic or have a complicated view they will turn into a thing they either treasured or feared in life. (ex sarah/eye, lily/flower). The main character(Virgil) is one of the most human looking, with his head, hands and feet cut off of course.

Backstory:

Virgil is a demi-boy (afab) and was put through a lot by his parents when he was alive. His parents visited him after school. When his parents came to the school and saw people referring to him as his preferred name they freaked out and killed him. Slitting his throat, wrists, and ankles (why they take their current form). He wakes up in a strange world, seeing people not really looking like people, it freaked him out a bit at first but he ran into Sarah and Michelle. After staying with the two for a while they started referring to Virgil as their child and he ran with it. Virgil eventually meets a person with a cat head (remy) and another with a flame where their face should be (emile) , they became friends and have been inseparable since.

Chapter Text

No ones pov

On March 13th 2005 in Northern california a beautiful baby was born. Her name was Emily, she had pale skin and dark grey eyes with a few strands of wavy brown hair. Her parents loved her dearly and felt that they always would.

Virgil's point of view,

I walk out of history class, which happened to be my last class when I saw my parents standing there. I go to hug them as I usually do when greeting them when I remember my binder, but I could probably play that off when I see an acquaintance walk up to me.
“Hey Virgil! See you tomorrow in P.E.” They say while walking past us.
“Whos Virgil?” My mother asks. I cower, as she repeats the question over and over getting angrier each time.

I finally break
“It's me mom! I'm trans!” I scream at her, admittedly not as coherently as I would like due to the fact that I was sobbing.
“NO! YOU ARE OUR DAUGHTER AND THAT IS FINAL.”
“I'm your son!” I try to reason with them as they grab me by the wrist and drag me to the car.
“I have no son.” My father says and we drive home in complete silence, both of them fuming.

When we arrive at our house I go up to my room to find my blades and attempt to start cutting. They burst in and grab them from me.
“If you want to hurt yourself so bad let me do it.” My father screams while grabbing my left arm.
He makes a long horizontal cut around my whole wrist, he does it so slowly that I feel like I might die right there from pain. As my wrist starts dripping blood he does the same to my other wrist and then my ankles and finally my throat with some other seemingly random cuts on my arms. I am still sobbing as they scoff and give a rough kick to my stomach before walking out. I start to feel nauseous, like I was about to throw up all my organs. Cold. I feel so cold, like I was dunked inside a fresh ice water and left there to drown. My heart starts beating abnormally fast before I slowly start being lured into an unconscious state.

When I wake up I feel lighter than air, like laying on a cloud. When I sit up I see what looks like a corporate waiting room complete with a secretary with a snake wrapped around their neck. They look up to see me and wave me over to their desk. Upon closer inspection their hair also has snakes in it, and their earrings are snakes, and they have several small snakes on their desk.
“Hello my name is Salem, they/them, you can call me Sal if you would like! and may I be the person to welcome you to the afterlife!”
“THE AFTERLIFE?” WHAT, I can't be dead can I ?!? No, this isn't really happening, I must be dreaming, yes that's it! I'm obviously dreaming. I reach over to pinch my arm when I notice that my hand isn't connected to the rest of my arm, now I know that I'm dreaming. I close my eyes and pinch, when I open them I just see an unimpressed salem.

“You aren't dreaming kid, trust me I would know.” they say gathering some paperwork.
After they seemingly collect it all they hand it to me.
“Since you are under 21 we will bring you to find a guardian, it's kind of like the adoption system except no exceptionally long wait time. They stand up and start walking, beckoning me to follow them. We arrive at a pale yellow building with a few people inside.

They open the door to reveal a person with lemon colored hair and clothing. Salem goes up to the person and kisses them.
“Hi kid! Im Oliver, he/him pronouns please!” I smile and hand him the papers.
“Okay Virgil, you can follow me to the main room, bye darling!” He says waving to Salem.
“Farewell honey, see you around Virgil, I hope you find a good home.” They say, exiting the building. He leads me into a room with three couples, two people by themselves, a toddler age kid, and a baby. One of the couples is looking towards the toddler age kid. I look around the room some more and I see a couple approaching me.

“Hello, I am Sarah and this is Michelle. We both use she/her pronouns.” One of the women says, reaching out a hand. I shake it with some hesitation.
“Im Virgil, I use he/him pronouns” I say expecting to be turned away because I was trans.
We continue talking for a bit when they ask.
“Would you like to stay with us Virgil?” I smile a bit and nod sharply, these two being very nice and I feel like they would be good to stay with. They wave Oliver over and sign some papers.

About two hours later we arrive at their house. It looks huge!
“Sorry that none of your things from the mortal world transferred, but we can take you shopping tomorrow to get some clothes and things like that for you.” Michelle says opening the door for me.
“Thank you so much for letting me stay here, both of you, this means so much to me.”
“Of course Virgil, now why don't you get some sleep, we have a big day tomorrow. They lead me down a hallway, to a gray door.
“We’ll let you get some rest, see you in the morning.” They say heading to their room.
I open the door and see a room much larger than the one I had at my old house. I walk up to the bed, sitting on it before lying down and sinking into the serenity of sweet, sweet sleep.
