Late Night

Summary:

Drabble request: I was wondering if I could request Rex with a reader who isn’t confident in her leadership skills or something like that?

Work Text:

You look at the clock as you scroll through your notes, chewing nervously on your lip. It’s almost three in the morning, and your eyes sting with fatigue and drowsiness. You glance back down at your datapad, looking over your notes again for your meeting tomorrow.

You’re giving a presentation to a panel of executives at your work, and you’ve been freaking out for weeks, going through every part of your speech with excruciating detail. You know the information is correct, but you can’t help but be nervous about speaking in front of your bosses.

You’re good at your job, but you’ve never felt confident in your ability to lead a team or speak in front of others.

You sigh again, pinching the bridge of your nose between your fingers. While you’re focusing on your breathing, you hear a rustle of noise coming from your bedroom. You glance up to see Rex, stumble out of your door, rubbing sleep from his eyes. He looks soft and rumpled, and it makes you smile despite your stress.

“What are you doing out here, mesh’la,” he yawns, fumbling his way towards you on the couch. He flops down next to you, gently taking the datapad from your hands before falling forward to collapse on you.

“Rex, I was -” you break off with a giggle as he mumbles something unintelligible but decidedly grumpy into your neck, pressing more of his weight onto you. You’re forced to fall back, with him draped across your chest.

You heave a sigh, resigning yourself to taking a break from reviewing your notes as you fight a yawn. Your eyelids are heavy, and Rex is warm. You just want to bask in the comfort of being in Rex’s arms and forget about work, just for a moment.

“You’re gonna do great, mesh’la,” comes a sleepy mumble against your neck.

You huff a breath, rolling your eyes at the ceiling.

“No I’m not,” you respond, frowning. There’s still so much to review, and you need to practice your speech. “I’m not good at this stuff. I’m gonna mess up. I know it.”

Warm lips press a drowsy kiss to your throat, and Rex hums before responding.

“You’re amazing, mesh’la. I know you can do it,” he pauses here to place another soft kiss to your neck. “Come back to bed with me, sweetheart.”

“But-”

Rex cuts you off with a huff, leaning up to glare at you, expression still softened by sleep. He flicks your forehead, and you yelp in protest.

“Mesh’la. You’ve been preparing for weeks. I know you’re going to do well.” His tone softens at your pout. “Please come back to bed. You need your rest.”

You groan, letting your head fall forward onto his shoulder.

“I just want to do it right,” you whisper, eyes fluttering shut as Rex runs his hands up and down your back in gentle sweeps.

“You will, mesh’la.”
