Trevor awoke to a soft lullaby in a language he didn’t understand. It was still dark out, though he could see the pale light of the moon trickling in from the closed windows. And he wasn’t surprised at awakening to it. Sleeping heavily was not a strong point of his. He would be able to, it was just infrequent given the amount of times he slept out in the woods in danger of predators. Exhaling sleepily, he turned towards the direction of the song and opened his eyes partly to see Sypha sitting up and leaning against the headboard, gently rocking a small bundle.
She looked exhausted, dark circles under her eyes.
“What’re you doing up?” He muttered tiredly and she chuckled.
“Your daughter is being quite stubborn.” She teased tiredly as Trevor sat up and leaned forward, looking over Sypha’s shoulder. Alexandra was curled up to her mother’s chest, staring up at the pair, eyes clear and not remotely tired looking.
“How long have you been up?”
“Only an hour. She was hungry a little while earlier, and then just wouldn’t settle.”
“You could have woken me up.”
“You can’t exactly help with this one, Trevor.” She said with a soft chuckle. He muttered to himself, but kissed Sypha’s cheek gently. The parents were quiet for a little bit, just watching their daughter who refused to settle, though she seemed to take a keen interest in Trevor.
“I shouldn’t be surprised.” Sypha said with a sigh. Trevor looked at her curiously
“What do you mean?”
“There are some days where the only way I can get her to nap is if she has something that has your smell.” She replied with a chuckle as Trevor blinked in surprise.
“Really?” He asked after a moment and she nodded.
“I found out when you and Alucard had gone out to help with something in the village. She would not settle at all. She wasn’t hungry, and she did not need to have a diaper change. I didn’t know what to do and put her on our bed for a moment to rest my arms. I had left some of your laundry there for a moment, and well she found your shirt and clung to it and went to sleep in a few minutes.” She explained.
Trevor blinked and then felt warmth blossom through his chest, and up his face. He pointedly looked away, clearing his throat as Sypha looked over at him with a smile. She then yawned and Trevor smiled softly.
“Give her here.”
“You sure?”
“If she’s not needing to feed, I think I can handle it.” He said and tiredly she nodded, sliding the baby into his grasp. He settled her into the crook of his arm, taking her in as he felt Sypha settle next to him. Seconds later, he glanced over and saw that Sypha had fallen back asleep. He chuckled softly, tucking his wife into the blanket with his free hand.
“You exhausted your mother there, Lexi.” He said softly, and was answered by a soft coo. “...We shouldn’t be surprised, honestly. No matter what your mother says, she’s just as stubborn as I am. Of course you would be stubborn as a mule.”
Alexandra looked up at him with innocent eyes, big puppy dog eyes that had him sighing.
“And you’ve already gotten that from your mother...Fuck, I’m doomed.”
He stiffened and chanced a glance at Sypha as she shifted in her sleep. Alexandra let out a giggle and he sighed.
“You won’t be laughing if your first word is a curse word and your mother turns me into an icicle.” He said half-heartedly. She stretched, arching her back as she squirmed in his grip. “Actually...Maybe you will.”
Another soft giggle replied.
“You need your sleep too, sweetheart. Otherwise your Momma and I are going to be exhausted and you’re going to be cranky all day. And that’s not fun for any of us.” He said, running a hand over her tiny fist. She squirmed again, face scrunching up in displeasure. He sighed softly. There was a long pause of silence, and Trevor just looked at his several month old daughter who was still stubbornly refusing to sleep.
Glancing at Sypha again, he slowly slid out of bed, holding Alexandra close.
She cooed in response as he rubbed her back.
Softly he began to hum, rocking her as he walked around the bedroom. Secretly he was glad Sypha was out cold. That way she wouldn’t hear his horrendous singing voice. It was a soft lullaby, something that his mother had sung to him when he had a fever and she tended to him as a child. The words were long gone from his memory. Replaced with pub songs and hazy from years of drink.
But even if the words had long since vacated his mind, he could still remember the melody. And if he thought hard enough, he could almost hear his mother’s voice. It was soft, and gentle. Not like his. His voice sounded strange to him. Not right. Too rough for something to soothe an infant reluctant to sleep.
But when he chanced a glance he was surprised to see that she had settled, staring at him with large eyes. He kept humming, rubbing a hand over her back. Slowly he watched as those eyes began to close, the blinking slowing as the minutes ticked by. He kept humming softly even as her eyes slid closed and remained so, curling up to his heat. He felt her breathing slow and relaxed and he slowly walked towards the small crib that was in their room. Slowly, ever so slowly he lowered the infant into the crib, stilling when she shifted. But her eyes remained closed. He tucked her in before ambled back to his bed. He stared at Sypha, taking her in.
He bent down and kissed her forehead and she shifted in her sleep. He smiled and settled back under the covers, observing his small family. He intertwined his fingers with Sypha’s and they twitched around his.
“You have a lovely voice…” She murmured sleepily and he practically jumped out of his skin and looked at her.
“You’re awake??”
“Mm‘f course. Woke up to you singing our daughter to sleep. It was adorable.”
He felt the back of his neck begin to burn and he cleared his throat in embarrassment. Even in the dark, he could see that she was smiling in her sleep.
“Yes...well…”
He trailed off when she scooted closer to him, nuzzling into him.
“You’re a good father, Trevor Belmont.” She said sleepily and he blinked several times to combat the sudden burning in his eyes as he pulled her close, kissing the crown of her head. Slowly his eyes closed and the pair slowly fell back asleep, the memory of his mother’s lullaby echoing in his mind.
