In the morning after Hanamiya left, Imayoshi woke up on the wrong side of the bed, his arms cold from having only half of the blanket to cover his body during the night. His bare feet touched the wooden floor and he stood up without bothering to stifle the string of disgust building up from the bottom of his stomach, tasted a coil of ugly words in his mouth that would have looked very pretty if he’d hurled them against the wall. He felt thirsty, then.
He picked up his hand phone and found one missed call and several messages, forwarded ones from classmates that he had tried his best to ignore the night before. The digital display on his phone said 11:54, and he dialed Hanamiya’s number and pretended that it had been an afterthought.
Hanamiya picked up on the third ring. “Shouichi.”
“You left your tie here,” said Imayoshi.
“Oh?”
“Best come pick it up before it leaves with the garbage disposal.”
