Chapter Text
‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

“I guess my ass can’t compete with Jennifer Lawrence’s after all.” you joked awkwardly, adding on a weak laugh at the end of your words.
Yuji didn’t laugh though- instead his brows were furrowed as he looked at you nervously chuckling in front of him. You sighed when there continued to be no response from the boy in front of you.
“You don’t have to worry about not hurting me, Yuji. I know you don’t feel the same way. I..I thought if I did this I could finally get over my feelings for you.”
Yuji frowned at your words but continued not to say anything. And after a while of being on the receiving end of his silence, it began to frustrate you.
“I wouldn’t have said anything if it was going to make things awkward between us!” you groaned, immediately regretting your previous decision.
You buried your face into your hands, trying to not scream in frustration at your current situation. A million thoughts had flooded into your head when you tried thinking of all the possibilities of how your confession to Yuji would end. Nobara had convinced you the worst case scenario would be Yuji not feeling the same and asking to just remain as friends. Never did you think he would just stare at you with an expression you couldn’t make out anything from.
“Let’s just forget I said anything.” you mumbled into your hands in embarrassment.
Due to your current mortified state, you didn’t realize Yuji was calling your name until he said it for the fifth time.
Lifting your head, hands still covering your face, you spread your fingers apart to have your curious, but still nervous, eyes meet his piercing ones.
“I’m going to die.” he began. “Not now maybe, but eventually when the higher ups have no more use for me, there will be an execution.”
He stepped toward you looking down to grip your hands with his own. You weren’t sure whose hands were shaking; perhaps it was the both yours and his.
“I can’t promise you forever. I can’t even promise you that I’ll be there when we all graduate.” The grip on your hands tighten with each word. “And I know it would be selfish of me to want you to continue liking me, instead of letting you find someone else who could give you more time than what I have.”
There was a sudden wetness on the back of your hands, and you tried to have Yuji look up.
“Yuji, look at me.” you whispered. You gently rubbed your thumb over his hands. “You could never be selfish. I knew what I was getting into when I fell in love with you.” You paused to smile when his eyes widened at your last few words. “So I’ll take whatever time with you I can get.”
Wiping away his tears with a soft smile you continued.
“Whether it’s one day, one month, or one year. I want to be with you for as long as you’ll have me.”

There weren’t too many differences with your relationship with Yuji when it changed from a friendship to dating- other than the fact that he was much more affectionate with you in terms of physical touch.
He took each and every opportunity he could to cling onto you whenever he could, that you quickly adjusted to having his arms around you at all times when in the same room as him.
The habit remained even during class to the dismay of your two other friends.
Nobara would gag at Yuji’s public displays of affection, not hesitating to remind you that he seemed like the kind to eat his boogers as a kid- so to tread lightly when kissing him.
Megumi never failed to throw Yuji a look of disgust when hearing the jujutsu sorcerer whine about wanting to follow you to the bathroom so that he wouldn’t have to let you go.
But you knew the both of them were happy with the fact that the two of you were finally together; even more so that they didn’t have to listen to you or Yuji pining over each other anymore.
Even Gojo had congratulated the birth of your new relationship, taking the four of you out to eat the day after your confession. Everyone figured it was because he hadn’t thought up the lesson plan for that day, but none of you chose to voice the theory out loud.
You also chose not to dwell on the part where he jokingly told Yuji to “wrap it before you tap it”, making the two of you immediately blush at the insinuation while your friends threatened to regurgitate the celebratory sushi and mochi consumed moments before onto the cackling man-child they called sensei.

“I thought of a promise!” Yuji had exclaimed suddenly during lunch one day.
The chopsticks in your hand go flying from your surprise at his sudden burst of excitement, and one ends up hitting him straight in the face. It didn’t deter Yuji’s emotion in the slightest though, not even flinching when the utensil bounced off his forehead.
You raised a brow at the proud face he wore, assumably very happy with himself for coming up with his ingenious thought.
“Hmm?”
“I’ll promise you a lifetime of loving you.” He paused before sprouting a cheeky smile. “My lifetime, to be more exact.”
Hearing the somewhat random yet romantic offer, a smile bloomed on your face. The fact that he still was thinking about the conversation during your confession made your heart melt, if it hadn’t already done so from his previous words.
Resting your head on your hands you propped up on the table, you gazed at the boy in front of you with loving eyes.
“Why is my boyfriend so cute?” you asked with a soft smile.
You couldn’t help but take the opportunity to tease him though; it quickly having become one of your favorite pastimes.
“But are you sure?” you asked, cocking your head with a small grin. “There’s still a chance you could meet Jennifer Lawrence, after all.” you reasoned.
Yuji pouted immediately in response, and you had a hard time trying not to react at how seriously he was taking your joke. You tightly pursed your lips together to prevent a laugh from escaping.
“Baby, did I not tell you my ideal woman is you?” your boyfriend whined.
When he was given a raised brow from you, he jutted out his bottom lip further, making his pout that much more prominent.
“It’s true! After the time you saved me from that curse from our second mission together, my ideal type changed to you- I even told Aoi about it!”
“Fine, fine. I believe you.” you relented to stop his pouting.
(You were given confirmation of the fact the following day, when a certain Kyoto jujutsu graduate texted you out of the blue; giving you his blessing of dating his childhood(?) best friend/brother, not forgetting to mention how you were indeed Yuji’s ideal woman.)
When you saw that Yuji’s pout persisted, you let out a small sigh before getting up out of your seat to place a kiss on his pursed lips. It did just the trick, with his childish pout quickly changing into a bashful look, his cheeks reddening at the peck.
“A lifetime of loving each other, then.” you confirmed.
He nodded happily before reaching his hand out to drag yours from the edge of the table to the middle of it. Intertwining his pinky with yours, he smiles in affirmation.
“It’s a promise.”
But the two of you hadn’t realized how short a lifetime could be.
