Chapter Text
It was the middle of November and it was cold . Haru and Daisuke were supposed to be headed back to Japan soon to finish up some cases there and then take a vacation- aka relaxing at home and not traveling everywhere.
They had been work partners for a little over a year and a half at this point, most of that time was spent traveling and chasing down Adollium . They had been dating for around 5 or 6 months of that time. They spent their last day off before having to jump on a plane and go home, in America. New York City to be exact. Neither of them really knew why. It was crowded, it was loud, even the cheap stuff was expensive as hell. There were cases to work on, or criminals to catch, but they wouldn't be able to fly out till tomorrow- even though they used Daisuke's plane to go everywhere.
The room they were in wasn’t small by any means. However it didn’t come close to the size of the suites and apartments and mansions that Daisuke had bought for them in other places. They had lived somewhere else while in America, New York was just one of their final stops and Haru was getting tired of the big and extravagant rooms and homes that were only theirs for a short period of time. He voiced his tiredness to Daisuke, who compromised and got them a smaller room at a fancy hotel. It was good enough for the week that they were there. Haru missed the smallness of his old apartment back in Japan, but Daisuke was insistent on spoiling him even though he told him not to, many times. The room had a large bathroom, a king sized bed in the middle of the room, a small kitchenette complete with a stove, fridge, microwave, and a dishwasher. On the far side of the room there was a large tv, a couch big enough for four people and a table that could be used as a desk. On the opposite side of the room from the bed, a massive closet embedded into the wall. Bigger than the one Haru had back in Japan. Daisuke was sitting at the desk the room had on his laptop, wearing one of Haru’s old hoodies that he seemed to love so much. While Haru was just aimlessly scrolling through his phone as he sat on the bed in just a pair of sweatpants. It was a lazy day of nothing, neither felt the need to really get dressed.
They had gone out earlier for a nice lunch, came back and discussed what to do next as they waited for the next day to arrive. Neither could come up with anything that they had to do before they left America. Daisuke offered to get last minute tickets to some broadway show, or something else extravagant. But Haru just wanted to relax. Hours passed by and it was now evening.
‘Fuck it, I guess today works,’ Haru thought as he started at his phone. He wasn’t even sure what he had been looking at the past hour or so- too busy trying to calm his nerves.
"Hey" "Haru-"
They ended up speaking at the same time, neither looking up at each other as they spoke. After realizing what had happened, they turned to look at each other for a moment and then let out a small laugh.
“You first” Haru smiled at him from his spot on the bed.
“Let’s go on a walk. There is a park nearby that is having an interesting light show tonight. We should go see it.” He stood and closed his laptop before walking over to the closet to grab some of his clothes. “Wear something nice”
Haru stood up and stretched his arms, before walking over to him and wrapped his arms around Daisuke’s waist. Resting his chin on his partner's head, oh how he loved that height difference. “Funny, I was about to say the same thing”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, besides the light show thing. I didn’t know that was happening. But I do want to go on a walk with you.” He moved his head and placed a small kiss on the side of Daisuke’s neck. “Wear one of your turtleneck sweaters. Those look really good on you”
After He removed his arms from his partner and stepped away to grab his own set of clothes, out of the corner of Haru’s eye he saw Daisuke put one of his typical button up shirts back onto the rack, and then grab a black turtleneck. Haru really did like him in those shirts, he always looks so good. Daisuke looked good in black, sure that’s all he wore, but he looked good. The turtleneck always hugged his body in all the right places. It was loose enough to not look skin tight, but tight enough to show off his well toned body. Haru loved it.
He grabbed his own stuff and decided to just change right then and there. Which was normal to Haru at this point in their relationship. They’ve been dating and practically living together for months, not to mention the
late night activities
. They’ve seen each other's bodies in so many different ways, changing in front of Daisuke no longer made him blush uncontrollably like it did at the start
.
This was just how things were. Normally Daisuke would do the same thing, having less shame then Haru did. He was the first one to start changing in front of Haru. In the beginning Haru would panic, gather his things as quickly as possible and book it to the bathroom. Even though he had seen Daisuke completely naked at that point, it still took a lot of getting used to. But now they were at a point where changing clothes, being shirtless or pantless around the hotel room/house was normal. So it worried Haru when Daisuke just gathered his clothes and walked to the bathroom.
“Dai? You alright?” He called after him, but he said nothing as he slipped into the hotel bathroom. Haru tried to recount the things he did that day, trying his best to figure out if he upset Daisuke at any point. Daisuke wasn’t one to hold back his irritation, especially around Haru. If he didn’t like something he would have said something. Haru ended up wearing a beige sweater with a single large red stripe on the middle, with a white button up underneath it and some regular jeans. Daisuke once said he liked that look on Haru- so he figured he’d test it out again. But it was still cold outside so he grabbed his jacket from the coat rack and held it in his hands, after making sure that a certain item was still in the pocket.
After about 15 minutes of waiting, Haru was about to call out Daisuke’s name again- but he stepped out of the bathroom, wearing an all black turtleneck and some tightish white pants that framed his legs in a way that Haru had never seen before. Hell he had never seen him wear those pants before. Normally it was all black or dark colors, and only slacks or sweatpants. But those white pants looked so damn good on him, Haru could feel his brain short circuiting. The pants distracted him from the fact that Daisuke also had his hair down.
Double damage to Haru’s heart
.
“D...damn” Was all he could mutter.
“Is it that bad? I thought you liked me with my hair down, or is it the pants? I wanted to try something different because you’re always saying that I wear the same thi-” Haru cut off his words by placing his hands on his neck and pulling him in for a kiss, filled with love and adoration. When Haru pulled back he noticed that Daisuke’s cheeks were now a faint pink color. So cute.
“You look amazing as always Daisuke.” He gave him another peck on the cheek and stepped back, “Well, ready to go?” After getting a nod from him, and waiting for him to grab his coat- they headed out into the city.
The walk itself was pleasant, cold, but still nice. Daisuke wrapped one arm around Haru’s and intertwined our fingers as we walked. Neither were big on PDA unless someone was flirting with either of them and the other had to be dramatic. They had been getting better about showing their love and care for each other around other people and not holding it all in till they got back to wherever they were staying, but Haru was still awkward about it and Daisuke was always unsure about what to do- but this was really nice.
“Daisuke”
“Hmm?”
“This is nice.”
“I think it’s too cold”
“No, I meant holding your hand like this in public.” Haru let out a chuckle and raised their hands up just enough for him to kiss the back of his partner's hand and then he dropped their hands to let them fall back in between them.
“Oh...yes I suppose that is also very pleasant.”
Haru gave him a smile, then turned his head back to look forward. Haru gave his hand a small squeeze. He was blushing again, not as much as he usually would, but he was. If Daisuke asked, he'd just blame it on the cold. However the truth was, he was
incredibly
nervous.
“You are being very affectionate tonight...any particular reason?” Daisuke asked, breaking the comfortable silence they had between them.
“Do I have to have a reason?”
“No, of course not. You’re just normally against pda- not to mention that you’re normally irritated with me while we’re not at home. You seem to like calling me a ‘bastard’ and an ‘idiot’ ”
“..Would you rather I yelled at you? I only really do that when you do something stupid or spend too much money- but you haven’t done that yet.” Haru turned his head and gave Daisuke a smile once again. “Besides I shouldn’t need a reason to be nice and affectionate to my boyfriend.”
Boyfriend
Sure that's what they were. They were in love, said I love you to each other quite often, and did a lot of things couples do, but hearing the term always made Daisuke's heart skip a beat. It was so simple. Just a simple word. Daisuke wasn’t used to simple things so much so that this simple word could make him blush no matter how many times Haru said it to him.
“I...I suppose that is true.” Daisuke squeezed his hand lightly and averted his eyes. “It’s nice seeing this side of you. Affectionate and kind and not angry and irritated.”
“You big sap- It’s because nothing stressful is going on. We’re not on a case or working or traveling. Today we’re just two people in love going on a walk. I’m allowed to be nice to you Daisuke...just don't expect this treatment when you piss me off”
The light show was certainly something, it was mesmerizing. The water in the fountain of the park dancing with the music that was playing. The buildings nearby had lights projected onto them, making the colors move along with the music. Haru got so caught up in it that he nearly forgot his original plan for their night out. He really didn’t want to do it around so many people, but when he turned his head he saw Daisuke staring right at him. Grey blue eyes staring deep into his own golden eyes.
“Dai-”
“You’re beautiful Haru…”
Even after all the affection that Haru had given him on the way over, he still wasn’t used to Daisuke being the one to compliment him out of nowhere. Haru could feel his face heating up, “D...did- you even watch the light show…?”
“A little, but you were far more mesmerizing and pleasing to watch”
Haru just rolled his eyes, with a small smile on his face as he faced the shorter man. “Very cute, but wasn’t your idea in the first place”
“It was just the closest free attraction, I know how you feel about my spending.”
Haru stood there in shock, eyes widened after hearing those words. He didn’t expect Daisuke to have this much thought into a simple night out. Normally when Daisuke makes plans for them, it’s fancy restaurants and VIP tickets to parties that Haru has very little interest in. They did their best to meet each other halfway on things. Or compromising by doing one super fancy thing and one normal person thing. They made it work. But for Daisuke to openly choose to go to a free event just to spend time together was actually kind of romantic.
“That is...actually really sweet of you...Thank you Daisuke...but hey let’s walk somewhere quieter, if you’re more interested in spending time with me then seeing the lights.” The taller man gave him a genuine smile and took a few steps past Daisuke, but then felt him grab his arm with one hand.
“Hmm?” He turned around so he could face him again, one hand was behind his back and the other still had a hold onto his partner's arm. He looked...nervous. “Daisuke?”
“H...Haru..” He was still looking down, Haru had never seen him look so damn nervous before, but then he took a deep breath and looked up at the taller man with that soft genuine smile that he knew was reserved for Harus eyes only. “Haru please listen to every word I am about to say. It took a great deal of time to find these words, so please wait till I am finished to speak.”
Haru just nodded and smiled at him, nervously awaiting whatever Daisuke had to say to him. His mind shifted to thinking that Daisuke wanted to break things off, even though he thought everything was going well. He thought maybe he wanted Haru to go back to Japan but have himself stay here in America. Haru shook himself out of his thoughts and paid attention to his partner.
“When we first met, you were...
aggravating
to work with. You hated every little thing I did, and always had something to yell at me for. I know that you didn’t like being around me at the start, and for a while it was mutual. But then I saw the true you, the Haru who didn’t care what happened to him- just wanted to save a person's life when the first division’s orders were to shoot to kill. The Haru who is so justice driven that he doesn't eat or sleep for days. The Haru who, no matter how many times I told him to go away- just wanted to help me get justice for my mother. And for that I can not thank you enough. I’ve seen you grow so much since I first met you, and I know that I have also grown a lot all thanks to you. You have your faults, and your days that you annoy me- but you have so many more days where you amaze and dazzle me. You are the first person that I have met that could not be bought. Not with money, gifts, or food, or trips, or gadgets. You stayed true to yourself and got upset with me whenever I asked. You are such an honest person Haru. Not only did you help me with my family's case, but you also stayed by my side the whole time- and ran around the world with me cleaning up my family's mess with all of these cases of adollium. You are my hero Haru Katou. You have been since I met you. I know I am not usually so open about things, but you have taught me that it’s okay to open up about how I am feeling, and I
feel
like everything is going to be okay as long as I have you by my side. Your smile has always shined so brightly over everything that you do, and I would love to keep that smile in my life, to see it every morning and night and know that things are okay, that I am okay now. You helped me as a work partner, as the first friend I have ever had that wasn’t after my money, and now as my boyfriend...someone I can trust to care for me and love me no matter what. So Haru Katou, would you do me the honor of becoming my life partner as well”
As he finished up his emotional speech, that had Haru tearing up and just wanting to shout a very loud and excited
‘yes’
and kiss him- He had a small feeling where it was going half way through the speech, but he stayed patient and listened closely as his partner spilled his heart out to him. He moved his other hand from his back to show a small red velvet box that had a simple silver band in it with a very small ruby embedded in the top in the shape of a diamond. He still looked nervous because Haru was too caught up in the speech and the ring to say anything.
‘
This was also what I wanted to ask tonight
.’ Haru thought to himself as let out a small chuckle and reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small grey box and opened it to show him a ring with a simple gold band with a small onyx gem on top of it in a circle shape.
“Funny, I was going to ask you the same thing...but I didn’t have a speech prepared or anything like that” I smiled at him. He could feel his cheeks beginning to hurt from all the smiling, as well as the heat from his blushing.
Daisuke looked from the ring Haru brought out and then back to Harus face a couple times, eyes wide in a sense of shock like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. After trying to take it all in, he said “So...is that a yes?”
Haru rolled his eyes for what seemed like the tenth time that day, and used his empty hand to grab the back of his boyfriend's neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss. Soon enough Haru felt his partner's arms around his back. Deeping their kiss. As they broke apart for air, Haru placed a small kiss on the forehead.
“Daisuke Kambe, I love you so so much.” Haru moved his hand from Daisuke’s neck to caress his cheek, lightly moving his thumb on the other cheek. “I may not have had a huge speech ready like you did, but of course it’s a yes. Nothing would make me happier.”
“Good” Daisuke smiled before he pulled Haru in for another kiss.
