Work Text:
The two of them were sat on the floor of Iwaizumi’s bedroom in front of the window, one admiring the stars, and the other admiring the boy in front of him.
The moon pouring in through the window was lighting up Oikawa’s face perfectly, highlighting his features in all the best ways, the stars reflecting in his eyes making him look like the same young boy he remembered falling for, like he could take on anything that was thrown at him.
He was breathtaking.
“The view of the sky was always the best from your room Iwa-chan”
“Yeah, it’s beautiful” not once did Iwaizumi’s gaze leave Oikawa
Iwaizumi reluctantly removed his eyes from Oikawa in favor of reaching over to grab the old guitar he had become increasingly familiar with over the years.
Only few people knew Iwaizumi could play the guitar and of course Oikawa was one of them. Oikawa was there when a younger Iwaizumi had first strummed the untuned strings of a guitar he’d gotten as a gift, and even now he was there constantly pestering him to play him a song whenever he came over.
He strummed the chords listening anything that may be out of tune, the sound causing Oikawa to divert his attention from the sky he adored so much over to Iwaizumi
“Oh? Are you gonna play something Iwa-chan?”
“Yeah,” once Iwaizumi was content with the sound the strings produced he turned to face Oikawa
“I,” he hesitated as his words failed to produce a proper sentence, he huffed, “for you” he said it quietly almost hoping Oikawa wouldn’t catch it, but he did, and it made something in Oikawa’s chest feel warm.
Iwaizumi began playing a soft tune soon followed by his voice,
“Let's fall in love for the night
And forget in the mornin'
Play me a song that you like
You can bet I'll know every line
I'm the boy that your boy hoped that you would avoid
Don't waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise
I know better than to call you mine”
Iwaizumi was to focused on playing well for the boy sitting in front of him he didn’t have time to notice the look of pure adortion on Oikawa’s face, the same look he had whenever he would look up to admire the stars in the sky, and the same look he’d worn for years when he looked at Iwaizumi when his back was turned
Iwaizumi continued
“You need a pick-me-up?
I'll be there in twenty-five
I like to push my luck
So take my hand, let's take a drive
I've been livin' in the future
Hopin' I might see you sooner
I want you ridin' shotgun
I knew when I got one right”
Iwaizumi playing a song for Oikawa wasn’t unusual, although this is one of the few times he has done so without Oikawa asking him to first and that made Oikawa’s heart flutter. But something about this time felt more personal because what Iwaizumi had said still rang in his head, “For you”
“I love it when you talk that nerdy shit
We're in our twenties talking thirties shit
We're making money but we're saving it
'Cause talking shit is cheap and we talk a lot of it
You won't stay with me, I know
But you can have your way with me 'til you go
And if all your kisses turn into bruises, I'm a warnin'”
Oikawa wanted to say something, but he didn’t know what and all he could do was manage to open his mouth only to close it again. He was unable to do anything more than just sit and admire the boy singing to him, for him.
“Let's fall in love for the night
And forget in the mornin'
Play me a song that you like
You can bet I'll know every line
'Cause I'm the boy that your boy hoped that you would avoid
Don't waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise
I know better
I know better
I know better than to ever call you mine”
Finally Iwaizumi’s movements along the guitar stopped, the strum of the guitar along with his voice no longer being carried through the air
Oikawa stared at Iwaizumi, a fond look in his eyes, one that could almost rival Iwaizumi’s own. He awed only for a second longer before he let out a laugh far more wonderful than any song Iwaizumi could ever hope to play.
“Iwa-chan did you just serenade me?” He said through a light laugh that seemed to brighten the dim room.
Immediately Iwaizumi’s face began to feel hot.
He cleared his throat, “Call it what you will,” Iwaizumi was no longer looking at Oikawa but now down at his guitar, too nervous that his eyes would reveal the words he’d yet to say.
Oikawa let out another soft laugh, one that made Iwaizumi’s heart stutter. He looked up at the boy, a mistake on his part really.
He wore a smile that could easily make anyone swoon, and Iwaizumi was no exception. His eyes were closed and the little crinkles in his eyes proof of his genuine joy.
Ah,
Iwaizumi could never get tired of this, of him. Of the boy he had grown up alongside, the one who had been a pain in his side any chance he got, the one who had dragged him into trying out volleyball and not made him regret it even once, the one who had unknowingly kept him up on late nights with some lame love song playing through his headphones with thoughts of only some tall brown hair brown eyed volleyball loser.
“Oh Hajime, still as dense as a rock” Oikawa had moved to hold his face in both hands, “I’ve always been yours” he leaned in so that their foreheads were touching, the rest of their faces only a breath away now.
Iwaizumi let his head rest in the palms of OIkawa’s hands, “Is that supposed to be a confession or what?” he said with a small laugh
Oikawa laughs again, a sound Iwaizumi was sure he would never get tired of hearing.
“And if it was? Wasn’t your little song one too?”
Iwaizumi’s face feels warm and he knows Oikawa could feel it too. This time they both laugh and Iwaizumi places atop Oikawa's, pulling him the slightest bit closer to finally seal the space between them.
It seemed like with a single kiss they were trying to convey all of the unspoken words built up from over the years.
Once they pulled away Iwaizumi pressed their foreheads together,
“I love you Tooru”
Oikawa smiled brightly, an endearing glow in his eyes
“I love you too Hajime”
