Work Text:
“Do you think it’s gay enough, Wynonna?”
Waverly tilted her head and looked at the truck. She had spent all day with Jeremy, and a reluctant Rachel (“I’m busy” “Doing what?” “...Fine, I’ll help”), getting it ready for Purgatory’s annual pride parade. Wynonna’s truck was covered in rainbows, glitter, and cheesy sayings like ‘too gay to park straight.’
“I feel like maybe we could add another pan flag over here for Doc,” Waverly gestured to the passenger door, which was already covered by a unicorn, “Ooh, and we should definitely repaint the words with rainbow lettering.
“It’s pretty gay already if you ask me, baby girl. Nicky’s gonna love it,” Wynonna rested her chin on Waverly’s shoulder.
“You think so?” Waverly giggled nervously,
“Of course. Baby girl, she’d probably love it even if all your signs said ‘straight pride’ just because you and Jer made it.”
“Ew, straight pride is disgusting,” Waverly wrinkled her nose,
“The point is Nicole’s going to love it. Doc’s going to love it. Hell, baby girl, everyone’s gonna love it.”
“You sure?”
“A thousand percent,” Wynonna smirked, “but, if you’re that worried, I know how you could make it gayer.”
“How?”
Wynonna smirked, “by putting all of us in it of course.”

The Earp household was, arguably, always in a state of chaos, but the morning of Purgatory Pride couldn’t compare to anything else. Nedley had gone over to bid them a good morning, but left as quickly as he came when he heard Waverly using her ‘Wynonna listen to me, Goddammit’ voice (yes, that was a thing, and Nedley, quite frankly, was scared of it).
“Waverly have you seen my—”
“Rainbow boa?” Waverly held it up and Wynonna took it from her, “I told you to keep track of your stuff. Am I the only functional adult around here?”
“Your shirt’s on backwards,” shouted Rachel from across the kitchen, arms crossed and eyebrows raised.
Waverly glared and opened up her mouth to yell at Rachel, but Nicole came up behind her and wrapped an arm around her waist.
“Hey, baby,” she pressed a kiss to Waverly’s forehead, “everything okay?”
Waverly relaxed into Nicole’s touch, humming lightly. Taking advantage of this distraction, Rachel scurried out of the room.
“Hey! Where did she go?” Waverly tried to run after Rachel, but Nicole kept a firm grip on her waist.
“You know I love it when you take charge,” Nicole husked, spinning Waverly around to face her, “but I think everyone else might be getting stressed out.” She leant down and kissed Waverly, who immediately kissed back and put her arms around Nicole’s neck.
When they finally pulled away from each other, the majority of Nicole’s chapstick was on Waverly’s lips.
“I just want everything to be perfect for today,” Waverly buried her face into the crook of Nicole’s neck,
“It will be. You know why?”
“Why?” A small smile passed Waverly’s lips. Nicole’s confidence always calmed her down. Not to mention how hot it was.
“Because, you and I will be there together. And our family and friends will be there too. Pride isn’t about wearing your shirt the right way,” Waverly blushed at her words and Nicole chuckled, “it’s about celebrating us and our love.”
“Well,” the two of them startled as Wynonna walked in, slow-clapping, “that was quite the speech, Haught-stuff,”
“Wynonna! How long were you standing there?” Waverly’s face turned even redder as she jumped away from Nicole.
“Relax, baby girl. I just got here: came to tell you two it’s time to go,” Wynonna turned to walk to her truck. Nicole grabbed Waverly’s hand and gave it a gentle kiss.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be.”

When the Earps (and Nicole, Rachel, and Doc) arrived in town, they were greeted with rainbows everywhere. Rainbow ribbons were wrapped around the street poles, and every business had pride flags hanging from their windows. Purgatorians in various pride-themed outfits walked down the sidewalks. Wynonna parked at Shorty’s and they all went inside to meet Jeremy.
“Hey, Jerbear!” Waverly ran over and squeezed her best friend. He staggered back,
“Woah, nice to see you too, Waverly.”
Nedley came up to the group and clapped Nicole on the back,
“It’s a beautiful day, Sheriff,”
“It is, Nedley. You excited?”
Nedley sighed and Nicole’s face fell momentarily.
“For Purgatory Pride? Yes. For finding glitter in my bar for the next six months? No,” Nedley laughed warmly. Nicole beamed and gave him a hug.
“Thank you Nedley. For everything.”
“Don’t mention it, Nicole,” Nedley turned to the group, “Don’t you young people have somewhere to be?”
“Kicking us out already?” A look of mock offense filled Wynonna’s face, “Fine. Let’s go, team.”
Outside of Shorty’s, the festivities had already begun. There was a sizable crowd walking down the street and they were quickly pulled into the crowd.
“Make sure you don’t get lost, okay?” Waverly pointed at Wynonna and Rachel.
“Whatever, mom,” Wynonna scrunched up her face and stuck her tongue out, grabbing Rachel by the arm.
“I will be accompanying them, Miss Waverly, don’t you worry,” Doc tipped his hat and slipped off to follow Wynonna.
“They’ll be okay, babe,” Nicole rubbed Waverly’s arm soothingly. “It’s not like they’ll get lost,”
“If they do, that’s their bad. I’m here to have a good time with you,” After inhaling deeply, Waverly turned to face Nicole. She smiled. The crowd’s energy was electric and contagious.
“Who are you and what have you done with my Waverly?” Nicole faked suspicion.
“Dork,”
“Your dork,” Nicole kissed the tip of Waverly’s nose.
“My dork.”
Waverly pulled Nicole in for a kiss, reveling in the feeling of Nicole’s lips on hers. Cheers went up around them and Waverly felt euphoria course through her. This moment, surrounded by hundreds of people, but only really with one, was perfect.
