Chapter Text

It had been a week after Luz narrowly saved Eda from being petrified. Amity had watched, in horror, the entire thing on her crystal ball in bed. If she hadn’t broken her leg during the grudgby match against Boscha and co, she would have been there, fighting alongside Luz.

Amity wished she could have helped Luz in her time of need, just as Luz had helped her countless times. There was the time she helped recover Willow’s memories, the time she valiantly took her place in facing Grometheus and her worst fear, and that time she helped her overcome said worst fear by asking her to Grom…

The only saving grace of being bed-ridden while Luz was saving her mentor was that she could relive the feeling of being “scooped” up by Luz, of being held in her soft, warm, and surprisingly strong arms. This memory often turned Amity’s cheeks peach-red, and she knew in her heart that she’d never exchange that moment for anything else.

Now that Amity was better and mobile, she made it a point to check up on Luz. She had been hesitant in visiting the Owl House all by herself, knowing full well how often she turned into a cluster clump of nerves when she was around Luz. What may seem quirky about Luz to others is simply adorable to Amity - her misplaced confidence, boundless optimism and even the times she “meows” in imitation of a cat from the human world made up nearly everything she loved about her. This is going to be hard, thought Amity as she set out to the Owl House.

“Hoot hoot! Come to see ol’ Hooty have ya? And what do you have there? Is that a fresh screamberry pie? My absoluuuute favourite hoot hoot!” Hooty chimed as Amity approached the door.

“Don’t forget what I can do to you, bird tube.”

“Fine! Geesh! Nobody ever appreciates the literal gatekeeper of this hooting house! Hoot!” Hooty lamented and let the green-haired witch in.

The Owl House was a mess, as in, messier than usual. Things must have been chaotic for them ever since the petrification ceremony, Amity justified. There was nobody in the dimly-lit living room, so Amity carefully made her way upstairs.

Amity stepped through the hallway and stopped in front of the storage-closet-turned-Luz’s-bedroom. Her heart pounded against her ribs as she raised her hand to knock on the door. In that instant, the door swung open, revealing a wide-eyed Luz Noceda, just inches away from Amity’s face. The green-haired witch’s cheeks immediately turned into a colour tomatoes would be jealous of and stumbled onto her back, the still-steaming (and now actually screaming, for that matter) screamberry pie splatting face-down onto the ground beside her.

“Amity! I’m so sorry!” Luz squealed apologetically as she reached out to help up the thoroughly embarrassed witch. Amity was so caught up in the moment that she only just realised that their hands were interlocked. Upon registering how physically close they were, Amity immediately pulled her hands back and tended to the mess of a pie on the ground, in hopes of Luz not seeing how flushed her face had become.

“Uh… is that supposed to happen?” Luz questioned the bawling baked good on the ground.

“Ah! This! I… I made you a screamberry pie. It’s only supposed to make this noise when you take the first bite, but I guess being smashed on the ground would do the trick too.” Amity explained with her back turned.

“A pie? For me? Made by Amity? See, Blight? I knew that the good witch LUZura was able to befriend anyone! Even her biggest rival, Hecate? Amity? Amicaty??” As Luz debated on an appropriate name combo, Amity was internally bashing herself up for making a fool of herself in front of Luz. And as if the day couldn’t get any worse, Luz had brought up the f-word again. Friends.

“Here, let me help!” After Luz had decided that “Hamity” was the way to go, she grabbed a bunch of towels and mopped up the mess.

“Hey don’t throw that away! We can still eat the parts underneath!” Luz grabbed the smooshed pie from Amity before she could chuck it into the trash. That’s so Luz, Amity thought to herself, always seeing the good in everything.

The two girls finally settled down in Luz’s room, and they sat cross-legged by each other’s side sharing what’s left of the pie on the soft flimsy mattress that Luz had brought with her from the human world. The pie was absolutely scrumptious, especially since Amity had toiled at perfecting it. She had forced Emira and Edric to taste test her many failed attempts (they totally did not spit it out when Amity wasn’t looking) before she settled on a recipe she deemed fit for her crush.

“Amity, this is delicious! And it kinda tastes like the alfajores my mom would make for me!” Luz exclaimed after taking a bite. Amity couldn’t help but smile widely at the sight of the brunette wolfing down much more than her portion of the pie.

“Where is Eda and King, by the way? And I heard Lilith is staying here now, as well?” Amity asked. “Oh, they are out bounty hunting. Now that Eda and Lilith are sharing the curse, they don’t have magic anymore! And bounty hunting’s one of the few ways we have to keep food on the table…” Luz replied but trailed off in the end. Her carefree expression disappeared, giving way to a look of distress.

“Luz… Is everything okay?” Amity gently placed a hand on Luz’s shoulder in genuine concern.

Without warning, Luz turned towards Amity, buried her face into her chest and wrapped her arms around the green-haired witch’s soft, pale neck. Amity’s hands snapped up into the air in shock, and felt her face turn hot for the millionth time that day. Luz’s voice was now muffled, but it became clear that she was crying.

“I… I can’t believe I destroyed the portal home. Mami… she must be so worried! And none of my text messages can get through anymore. This is all my fault! I shouldn’t have stayed here!” The human pressed harder into Amity’s chest as tears streamed down her face, dampening Amity’s black blouse.

“Luz…” Amity managed to mutter. The human’s soft, brown hair brushed against Amity’s neck, sending a shiver down her spine. Luz felt so small and vulnerable, and all Amity wanted to do at this moment was to hug her, to tell her that everything was going to be okay, and to protect her no matter the cost.

Soon enough, Amity mustered up the courage and reciprocated Luz’s embrace. She felt the tension in Luz’s body ease a little as soon as she wrapped her in her arms. “I know things are pretty bad right now. But as a wise person once told me, we can fix this together.”

Luz looked up at Amity, her hazel eyes glimmering in tears, and once she realised who Amity was quoting, snorted out a laugh. Amity beamed. Their first inside joke! “Now repeat after me, we can fix this together!”

“We can fix this… together.” Luz giggled. “Amity, thank you. Ever since all that… stuff went down, I’ve been trying to distract myself from the fact that I don’t know when or how I will ever see my mom again. I’ve been trying to be strong in front of Eda, King, Willow and Gus so they wouldn’t worry too much about me, but the truth is… I’m so scared.”

“I get it, Luz. You’re always one to put others before yourself. But you need to remember that you have… friends here for you.” Amity regretted her choice of word as soon as she said it. Now that Luz had calmed down, a pang of clarity hit Amity. They were still hugging! A soft pink developed on you-know-who’s cheeks again, and Amity started to pull away from the human.

“Sorry, I got snot all over ya. Heh.” Luz sniffled a half-apology. Amity didn’t mind at all, but made a little show of wiping her blouse with a playful look of disgust.

“Look at all the snails we made!” The two girls suddenly heard the door slam open (poor Hooty) as Eda, King and Lilith trudged in from below them. “Now remember, sister, without your “business”, or whatever you want to call it, of selling human junk, we need to be more conscious of our expenditure.” They heard Lilith lecture. “Yeah, yeah, but first we need to buy a sceptre fitting for the king of demons! Me! Weh!” King’s audible tippy taps made Amity and Luz chuckle.

“Hooty!” They heard Eda call. “What’s Luz been up to today?”

“A friend is in Luz’s bedroom as we speak, hoot hoot!” Hooty made sure to emphasise on the word “friend”, much to Amity’s chagrin. Still, she can’t believe that even Hooty, a house demon, was better at picking up signals than her dear Luz.

“Ah, it’s that Amity kid, isn’t it? Well I guess we’ll just leave them to it. Hey, it seems like a storm is a-coming.”

As if on cue, a soft pitter patter broke the calm air, compelling both girls to look out the window. It was raining.

Luz decided that a sleepover was in order.

Chapter Text

The rain grew into a thunderstorm, its sizzling droplets scalding the earth below. The sun was also starting to set, and soon enough, the silky intertwine of red, yellow and orange transformed into an indigo-hued night.

Amity was nervous. It didn’t look like the boiling rain was going to stop anytime soon, and her parents would be furious if they found out where she had been. She decided she was just going to tell them that she had been studying at Skara’s.

“You know, the rain is actually pretty nice in the human world,” Luz sighed at the sight of the wondrous landscape outside her window. She took out five pieces of paper from her satchel nearby, and gently tapped on them, producing five gleaming light orbs that hovered into the space above. “Sometimes, I would run out into the rain and try to find the biggest puddle to jump in. My mom would get mad at first, but she’d cave in and join me.”

Amity gazed at Luz, the soft curves of her face so beautifully illuminated by the light orbs. Amity never really thought much about the light spell until she met Luz. A child could do it, but she had never seen it cast the way Luz did.

“I’d love to feel the rain in the human world someday,” Amity wondered out loud. Luz turned and made eye contact with Amity, catching her off guard. She noticed I’ve been staring at her! Amity quickly averted her gaze to a corner as she felt a familiar warmth returning to her cheeks.

“Hey, it’s getting dark out. How are you going to get ba- oh my goodness, this can be it! Our very first slumber party! Whaddaya think!” Luz was so excited that it seemed like she jumped a little, even though she was still seated on the ground.

“Me? A slumber party with you? Lying next together in pyjamas? Sleeping?!” Amity blurted out as every single drop of blood from her body rushed to her face. This time, she had nowhere to go.

“Yeah! Oh, it’s gonna be so much fun! We could read The Good Witch Azura together! We are presidents of the Azura book club, after all.” Luz, oblivious to a crumbling Amity, stood up and rummaged through a chest that sat in a corner. After sifting through what was mostly Eda’s garbage, Luz finally surfaced another mattress.

“Here!” Luz set down the thin mattress next to her own. “Owlbert managed to score another mattress for me on one of his runs to the human world… that is, before the portal incident. I knew I was going to have an emergency slumber party one of these days!”

Amity was barely processing anything Luz was saying. The situation unfolding before her only happened in her wildest dreams and fantasies.

Before she knew it, Luz dropped a piece of yellow fabric onto Amity’s lap. Picking it up, Amity saw the familiar navy blue varsity font that spelled “HEXSIDE”. “I didn’t exactly pack before coming to the Boiling Isles, but I figured that you could change into this!” Luz quipped and ushered Amity to the bathroom.

Moments later, Amity reappeared in the bedroom donning Luz’s jersey. It smelled vaguely of Luz, which only put Amity further on edge. “Th-thanks for this, Luz. I hope it’s not too much trouble. If Eda minds I can probably get Ed and Em to come get me,” Amity said, still unsure of whether staying was a good idea. If her parents ever found out, it might very well be the end of her and the inhabitants of the Owl House. On the other hand, she got to spend time, but more importantly, alone time, with Luz. Besides, she had texted the Blight twins on her scroll earlier and they agreed to vouch that she was at Skara’s instead. Ed and Em were wonderful siblings, but Amity wished that they didn’t have to end their conversation with “have a LOVEly time at luz’s, mittens ;)”.

Amity was still torn between staying at the Owl House and staying on the safe side, but Luz managed to win her over. “Pffft, I’m sure Eda doesn’t mind. And besides, I was going to ask you if you wanted to have a sleepover one of these days,” Luz assured while setting down her collection of The Good Witch Azura books in chronological order in the middle of the two mattresses. All doubts about staying over instantly vanished, and were replaced by a million flushed-cheeks-inducing thoughts - she wanted to have a sleepover with me? Was she going to ask Willow and Gus as well? When was she going to ask me? WHY was she going to ask me??

The sound of the human finally plopping herself down on a pillow interrupted Amity’s bullet train of thoughts. Luz gave a broad smile and patted the pillow next to her, coaxing Amity to sit by her side. Soon enough, Amity’s nerves calmed and the two girls immersed themselves in the gripping adventures of their favourite magical warrior.

Two hours or so went by. Their enthusiastic bursts of discussion about the book ceased into a comfortable quiet.

“Amity…”

“Y-yes, Luz?”

Luz turned to face Amity, her eyes drooping in a rather tantalising manner. Or at least, that was how Amity perceived it.

“I’m pooped. Think it’s time for bed!” Luz lazily announced and started to put the books aside.

“Oh, yes! Of course! Bed!” Amity responded a bit too quickly and busied herself with settling down on her mattress. Get it together, Amity ! The green-haired witch internally chided herself.

Luz then decided to quench all but one of the light orbs she had made. The gentle warm glow from the remaining orb tranquilised the air, but Amity was far from tranquil. This was the moment Amity had been dreading yet looking forward to. Sleeping right beside her crush was definitely not on her agenda for that day. If it were, Amity would have scheduled some time to freak out about it. To make things simultaneously worse and better, their mattresses were only a finger apart.

Shortly, the two girls were cozily burrowed under their covers, and after their goodnights, they were enveloped in silence once again. Amity wasn’t planning on getting any sleep, and she had resolved to stare at the dark ceiling until morning came. She simply couldn't risk doing anything embarrassing in front of Luz again.

Even though Amity was far from comfortable, she still enjoyed being in close proximity to her crush. Luz's company was always a welcome one, and she really liked that she could feel the warmth emanating from the human beside her, and how her pointy ears tended to twitch ever so slightly at the sound of Luz’s breath rising and falling.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

A soft blue light suddenly pricked the corner of Amity’s eyes, accompanied by a muted tapping sound. She turned and saw Luz’s back towards her, and that she was scrolling through pictures of her mom on her phone. Amity’s chest tightened. Her heart ached for how much Luz was in pain. She could never get used to Luz, who always seemed to effortlessly light up any room she walked in, being miserable.

Struck by a jolt of courage, Amity uncharacteristically scooched closer to the human. Luz needed her in that moment, and that was all that mattered.

“Oh Amity! I’m sorry, did I wake you?” Luz let out a surprised whisper, her thoughts clearly interrupted by Amity’s abrupt movement.

Here goes nothing , Amity thought as she reached an arm under the blanket and over Luz’s waist, closing the gap between them.

Amity’s eyes were shut tight, her mind wrecked with worry as she braced herself for a shove, a rejection. Instead, she heard Luz put down her phone, and felt a pair of hands rest on her arm. Her touch instantly purged Amity of all fears, and she felt her own body sink closer into Luz’s. As if by instinct, Amity’s head also fell in place, nestling in the nape of Luz’s neck. They indulged in a deep embrace as their heartbeats gradually caught up with one another. In that moment, they knew that, come what may, they would always have each other.

Then, they fell asleep to the soothing beat of boiling rain.
