Chapter Text
“Today’s going to be mostly sunny, with a chance of light rain in the afternoon. The probability of lunarians is 1.14% with the most dangerous area being the northern shore,” said Aventurine, moving wooden pieces around the board, “Red diamond and sapphire will be on look-out in that area, with ruby and emerald nearby just in case. Everyone else will be at their usual spots.” With that being said, everyone left to do their jobs. All but one who sat pathetically at a hardness of 4: Yellow Fluorite. He was too weak and clumsy for any jobs and most gems found him intolerable for it, all except for 5: Red Diamond, Sapphire, Aventurine, Charoite and Pink Zircon. The 6 shared a close bond, always hanging out together during their free time and occasionally bickering like siblings, mainly between Red and Ave.
Being left with nothing to do, Yellow went in search of the gem with the least dangerous job, Charoite. Charoite was in charge of the encyclopedia and would often travel around secluded yet beautiful areas in order to find unidentified species and often times would allow Yellow to travel with him.
”Hey, Ave, do you know where Charo went?” asked Yellow.
”Charoite? Hm… I think he’s in the near the Shore of Nascency,” replied Aventurine, “ah, but don’t disturb him!” he quickly added before turning back to replant some flowers that have outgrown their old pot.
Yellow replied with a bored ‘okay’ before leaving to search for the purple gem. The walk was quite long, taking nearly an hour to get to his destination but alas, when he got there he found just the gem he wanted to see.
”CHARO!” he called out, causing the purple gem to look up from what he was doing and giving him a lazy wave.
”Yellow? What are you doing here?” asked Charoite as the yellow gem got closer.
”Everyone else is busy so I thought I’d pay you a visit!” exclaimed Yellow Fluorite, sitting across from Charoite.
”Is that so…? So I’m guessing sensei has yet to find you a job?”
”Yeah… Do you think he’ll let me fight?”
”Hmm… probably not…”
”Aw man…” said Yellow before laying down on the dirt. There was a pregnant pause between the two as Charoite continued to dig. ”What are you looking for?” asked Yellow
”Y’know how sensei is always talking about ancient organisms n how they fled to the ocean and stuff? What if there are some who didn’t make it? Would they have left anything behind?” replied Charoite.
”But didn’t that stuff happen like, million of years ago? What if all the remains are gone?”
”Well yeah, but you never know…”
”Ah I see… Do you need help?”
”Probably, I’d like to get this done before it rains…” mumbled Charoite as he continued digging around. Yellow pulled a pair or gloves out of his back pocket and put them on before digging. The two dug in silence, occasionally asking each other if they found anything. Eventually it started raining, making it near impossible to dig further, but before they left they searched for any gems that failed to gain sentience just in case.
The two walked together, occasionally chatting on their way back to the school.
“Man it sure is pouring!” said Yellow, looking over at Charoite, who seemed less fond of it.
”Yeah… so much for light rain…” he mumbled angrily as they approached the school.
“Oh, back already?” asked Aventurine upon noticing the two.
”Yeah, due to the ‘light’ rain I wasn’t able to dig further,” replied Charoite, “We found some gem pieces though, figured we’d bring them just in case” he added, going over to the infirmary to give the pieces to Garnet.
Soon after, gems started entering the school as it got darker. Some went straight to bed, while others finished up projects or just played card games.
”Ha! You’re out Sapphire!”
”What?! Aw man…”
“Bye bye eyebrows!”
”Don’t call me that!”
”Ah… Yellow… your card-“
”HUH?! Aw bummer!”
After 6 more rounds of Love Letter, the 6 gems went to sleep.

Running.
Running was all they could do.
They ran and ran, but they weren't fast enough.
Their end approached quick.
They still had hope, though; maybe they weren't too late.
At last they reached the beach, some crying, some indifferent, some at a loss of what to do.
"So this is it, huh?" said the red clad eldest. The rest nodded.
"How... how do we do this?" asked the green brother, wiping the sweat from his brow.
"Jump off the cliff? Won't be painless, but..." said his immediate younger brother.
"Why do we have to die? Why do we have to run? I know you're tired, I'm too, but still! This... this is just..." snapped the youngest. The rest turned to face him, solemn expressions in their faces.
"What else can we do? This is the 6th asteroid to hit us in a row, we have little to no food left! We can't keep living like this!" snapped back the third brother.
"NII-SAN!" yelled the formerly 'ever-so-happy' brother, who had been quiet the whole time, as he witnessed his immediate older brother jump off. Before anyone could react, he followed in his older brother's steps. What else was left to do? There's no such thing as a carton of 5 eggs; 4 eggs? Sure, but 5? That was unheard of.
The youngest was in hysterics, while the second oldest tried to comfort him. The eldest and the 3rd born brother looked at each other, at a loss of what to do.
"We shouldn't keep them waiting then, huh?" mumbled the eldest, earning a glance from his brothers who nodded as they all headed towards the edge of the cliff. 2, 3, 6, 1: that was the order they went in. Of course it was; the eldest had to make sure they weren't alone in their last moments.
"Today we can expect fairly sunny weather with some passing clouds, there's a 6.3 per cent chance of lunarians today. Red Diamond and Blue Tourmaline will patrol the East shore, with Rhodonite and Tanzanite nearby. Everyone else go to your normal patrol routes." said Green Aventurine as everyone left to their jobs.
"Good work as always, Speaker Aventurine!" said Sapphire kindly. Aventurine nodded, flustered at the compliment.
"Ah that reminds me, I gotta wake them up..." mumbled Aventurine as they headed towards the dorm area. "Come on, wake up! You can't just sleep all the time!" he chided as he dragged a sleepy Yellow Brucite out of their bed.
"Why?" whined yellow, "It's not like I have anything to do!"
"Can't you at least accompany Charoite?! Come on!" he yelled. After back and forth arguing between the two, Yellow finally got out of bed, leaving Aventurine exhausted.
"Mh you mentioned Charo earlier, right? Where is she?" asked Yellow.
"Ah right, they might be near the East shore, where Rhodonite and Tanzanite are, heard him tell Red to ask them if he could accompany them." said Aventurine as he called over Opal in order to report to Kongo.
"Okay! Bye-bye!" said Brucite as it left to find the purple gem. "Near the east, huh..." They said after walking for a bit, until eventually he tripped over something.
"Watch it- Oh! Hey Yellow," said Charoite, who was crouched over, "you 'kay?" he asked. Brucite nodded.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Rhodonite said love found a plant he couldn't recognize." responded Charoite.
"Ah I see I see, where are those two? I thought you were with them." Said Yellow.
"Them? They're nearby. Rhodo-"
"Hello!" greeted Rhodonite, picking up Brucite. "What brings you here, 2.5?"
"Hi! I'm here to uh, hang out with Charo!" said Brucite
"Ah is that so? Oh that reminds me, how's the encyclopedia going?" said Rhodonite, to which Charoite just replied with a thumbs up.
"Rhodonite! Hurry, quick! Blue Tourmaline just asked us to ring the bell!" yelled Tanzanite.
"Huh?! Okay! Welp, bye you two!" said Rhodonite as love left.
"Damn, Lunarians this early?" mumbled Charoite as Rhodonite left, "It's probably best we go over and stand by." He said as the two headed towards the shore, where Red Diamond and Blue Tourmaline fought off the Lunarians. The two fought hard, using their swords to deflect the incoming arrows, and fighting off the firing sundry until Red finally sliced the Sheen, however, it never dispersed.
"What the-" said Red as he landed on the floor, "It's not dispersing?"
"I think it may be one of the new types our dear Alex mentioned, no? Such a horrid and cruel way our beloved burazzas have been used." said Blue Tourmaline in a melodramatic fashion.
"Can you shut up and try to finish it off? Sensei and the others are on their way." said Charoite, catching the two by surprise.
"Charo- and Brucite?! What are you two doing here?" questioned Red.
"He has a point, you two should stand back! It's not-" said Blue as he was interrupted by Charoite pushing them out of the way as the Lunarians threw down shuriken made of Blue Agate.
"CHAROITE!"

Chapter Text
"CHAROITE!" they cried out, watching helplessly as the shuriken flew towards the purple gem, only for the shuriken to be blocked off by the clipboard Charoite was carrying.
"What are you two standing there for?! Help me out over here, dammit!" yelled Charoite, who was struggling due to wanting to salvage some of what was written for the encyclopedia. Red Diamond and Blue Tourmaline, having snapped back to reality, got back on their feet to try to defeat the Lunarians, however it appeared as if they had taken too long, as suddenly, in the snap of a finger, the Lunarians had turned to dust. The four of them turned around to see Kongo Sensei approach them. "This should be fun..." mumbled Charoite as the feeling of impending doom took over them.
"Sensei...! My sincerest apologies! We, uh... we got distracted and almost allowed for our dearest Charoite to be in harm's way!" said Tourmaline, getting on his knees to beg for forgiveness.
"Trying to play hero I see..." began Sensei, looking over at Charoite, who looked away in sheer, raw fear.
"Here it comes! Everyone get back!" yelled Aventurine, grabbing Yellow Brucite by the collar of his uniform and hiding behind a rock.
"Why it's too early for that you fool!" Yelled Sensei, creating a very strong gust of wind.
"I'm very sorry!" cried out Charoite and Tourmaline, as their bodies crumbled to pieces while being blown away, while Red merely cracked a bit.
"Eh... ever so powerful I see..." mumbled Iolite, who had climbed a tree to avoid shattering. Once the air had calmed down, the rest of the gems collected the shards of their brothers and took them back to school.
"Need help?" asked Brucite, who felt somewhat guilty for what had happened.
"No," said Garnet, "last time you helped me put gems together they wound up with one arm longer than the other." he said as he fixed up Tourmaline while Charoite fixed himself up with ease after having his arms glued back.
"Actually, can you help me powder my face? I can't quite see and the sun's glare is blocking my view." said Charoite, giving the yellow gem a small make-up brush with a set amount of skin powder. Brucite, excited to be able to help, nodded and took the brush, trying their hardest to do a good job.
"Garnet! How's this?" asked Brucite excitedly. Garnet looked over, inspecting Charoite's face and gave a curt nod, before grabbing the brush and making small adjustments.
"Thank you, Bruce" mumbled Charoite as he resumed to work on his leg. "Oh yeah that reminds me, did we get enough shards to restore Blue Agate?" he asked Garnet. Garnet shook their head.
"We don't have enough. If we had enough we could easily bring him back, as our bodies host microscopic organisms called 'inclusions' which allow us to be put back together, even if we're broken into pieces. It's quite unique to us gems." explained Garnet, as he finished piecing Tourmaline together, covering up the cracks with the skin powder. "Welp, there you go," he said as Charoite and Tourmaline stood up. Tourmaline went to meet up with Red Diamond, who had been waiting on him, while Charoite went back to where they were in order to complete her entry, Brucite once again tagging along.
"I just remembered, didn't you used to be the doctor? Why'd you quit?" asked Brucite.
"I don't know, it was just awkward I guess? Having to piece gems back together in silence, or making small talk, that's awkward too." said Charoite, looking for the plant that they had just been studying that morning.
"I see..." mumbled Brucite, looking around the scenery. Aventurine and Sapphire hadn't been lying when they announced the weather, but then again, Sapphire's predictions had always been accurate. As soon as Sapphire came into mind, he looked at the sea, bright and blue. "Have you explored the ocean yet?" she asked.
"The ocean? No, I'd have to ask Sensei for permission, which is not gon' be today." answered Charoite, who had given up on looking for the plant and instead opted to lay on the ground. "Besides, why would I want to go there? The sun up here is better."
"I guess that's true..." they said, looking at the ocean, "But what if there's a job for me down there?" Brucite asked.
"A job? In the ocean? Sounds unlikely, besides, even if there were a job down there, you'd probably be the last person Sensei would want down there."
"Huh? Why's that?"
"You're too weak, 2.5"
"..."
"..."
The two stayed there until the sun began to set, to which they then made their way back to the school, where Sapphire greeted and congratulated everyone for a hard day's work. They were half way to their rooms when Charoite got ambushed by a very angry gem.
"What gives, Charo?! Do you have a clue to how much wood you've wasted?!" scolded Iolite, grabbing the fellow purple gem by the shoulders and shaking them.
"Sorry, sorry. You're right, I should've taken the hit and gone to the moon." said Charoite.
"That's not what I meant!" yelled Iolite, shaking Charoite even harder. The two bickered while Brucite left and went into her dorm, passing out the moment they hit the bed.
"Actually there's something I kinda wanna ask you." said Charoite, "What are the chances Sensei would let me go into the ocean?" he asked.
"I dunno, maybe like a 12 per cent success rate?" answered Iolite, very unsure.
"How 'bout if I brought Brucite along?" he added.
"With the scrap?! I'd say a 5 per cent, why?" they asked.
"Maybe there's a job down there for him, who knows."
"Ah so you're still trying to find them a job?"
"Yeah..."
"I see... try asking Sensei tomorrow!" said Iolite as she waved Charoite goodnight before walking into a wall, and continuing their way. Charoite went to their dorm as well. As they began to fall asleep, he could hear Alexandrite drag Iolite out of bed to try some new designs, which then lead to back and forth bickering between the two.
"Shut up!" Yelled another gem from down the hall, which caused the two to march down there and start arguing with the gem that yelled at them, causing another gem who was sick and tired of the arguing to call Sensei over to break up the fight.
Notes:
Oh yeah I forgot to mention, but like, since Rhodonite is basically my friend as one of love's favorite gem, he uses the same pronounce as him, which are Love/loveself/he iirc! However, that's not the only gem who uses neopronouns! Also sensei finally appears! Wow! Also if you're confused:
Karamatsu = Blue Tourmaline
One of my friends <3 = Sapphire! Also I'd like for people to guess which gem I am >:)
Chapter Text
Waking up the next morning felt slow, everything seemed slow as Charoite had to prepare to ask Sensei an outrageous question.
'The ocean, huh?' they thought, shaking their head at the disbelief that they're really going to ask a question so undoubtedly stupid. Finishing up tying their tie, Charoite headed towards where the morning announcements were held, but didn't really pay much attention, instead opting to look at Sensei. 'There's no way he'll say yes, but...' they thought, glancing over at Brucite, 'I guess I ought to try for them at least'. The meeting was soon over, with gems going to the locations they were sent to. Charoite quickly walked over to Sensei. "Excuse me, Sensei?"
"Hm? What is it?" he asked, turning around to face them.
"Uhm, I've been thinking... I'm just about done with the encyclopedia, I've covered most of the hills," they explained, "So I was thinking... how about I go into the ocean...? It's still very unknown to us and-"
"I'm sorry but no." interrupted Sensei, "You have a below average hardness, and are brittle, and considering how strong the waves have been lately, you might shatter and get lost." he said. Dammit, they should've known this would happen; hell, they knew this was going to be the answer they were going to get, but still, immense disappointment washed over them.
"I... I see..." mumbled Charoite, turning around. Well shit, what are they going to do about Brucite's jobless ass? 'I guess I could figure that out another time...' they thought to themselves, picking up the notepad and a pencil.
"Ah! Charo there you are!" exclaimed Brucite, who had been waiting for the other the whole time, "Where have you been?"
"Huh- Oh, uh, I had something to ask Sensei; nothing important, really..." said Charoite.
"Where are you headed to now?"
"Hm... maybe the White Shore..."
"Ah..."
The two walked in silence, Brucite occasionally running off to capture a bug or make small talk with whatever gems they encountered.
"Anything new?" asked Brucite, laying in the grass picking at a weed.
"Nope... damn..." said Charoite, looking around.
"How about we go into the ocean? It's all we can ever really see, but I don't think we've ever been there..."
"Can't. Sensei forbade it."
"Hah?! Man... what a bummer..."
"Right? I even told him there's barely anything left, but then he brought up my hardness and stuff..."
"Damn... It's no fair..."
"Tell me about it, but like even then my wearability ain't that bad... but then Apatite, who's wearability sucks, gets to take care of winter all by themself!"
"Apatite huh...? They're just about as hard as you, right? How come they get to stay up?"
"Their body handles cold weather pretty well, but that's about it."
"Ah..."
"Let's head back, there's nothing here." said Charoite as they walked away, Brucite following behind.
"Are you gonna reorganize the library?" Asked Brucite, trying to catch up with the purple gem. Charoite gave a small nod.
"That's all I can really do now, isn't it?" They deadpanned. However, as fate would have it, they both got caught by Alexandrite.
"You're both here?" They asked, holding some fabrics, queuing the other two that they needed to make a run for it, but alas, they were too slow against the mighty Alex, who captured them and forced them to model for them for nearly 2 hours, leaving them exhausted.
"Oh Charoite, great!" yelled another gem.
"Ever so reliable" mumbled Brucite, earning a glare from Charoite.
"You're pretty much done with your encyclopedia, right? And since you almost destroyed the notepad yesterday, you're coming with me to gather more wood!" said Iolite, dragging Charoite by their shoulders.
"But... what about Brucite, they're always free!" whined Charoite, trying to free themself.
"I can't! The tree trunks are too heavy for me..." said Brucite, trying to avoid tree duty.
"Hm... I guess Brucite could help carry too..." said Iolite before grabbing Brucite and dragging them along.
