Northern Lights

Summary:

Watching the Northern Lights soothed Fenrir Greyback since he was a child. Hoping one day he would have a family to share this with was a far off dream after the second wizarding war. Standing on the porch of his childhood home, Fenrir remembers his parents and the night that everything changed.

Staring up at the shimmering lights in the night sky at his home in Norway, had a young Fenrir mesmerized. From the first sunset in late September until the last in March, his parents ensured he never missed the show.
His fondest memories were the frigid nights closer to Christmas when his mum made tea for herself and his dad and spiced hot chocolate for him while he was bundled up in layers of thick fleece blankets. After settling Fenrir in his favorite spot on the large, open porch, his parents snuggled on either side of him to get lost in the lights dancing in the sky.
As Fenrir got older, the Northern Lights warmed his hardened heart. After the fateful day that changed his home from a loving safe haven to a nightmare, watching the lights dance across the sky tugged at the only happy thoughts left. The fear from hearing his mum scream for Fenrir to run as she was mauled by a lone werewolf haunted him everyday and night until the sun finally slipped below the horizon in late September.
Even during the war, the nights he was far enough north to catch a glimpse of the Lights soothed him. Fenrir knew he was not a good man, but he still held out hope that one day he would have a family to share the Lights with and make new memories.

Hermione tried to stay in England after the war was finally over. The loss of so many friends, her parents lost to her forever, and too many memories of a lost childhood-she moved to Norway. Putting the past behind her had taken its toll, but with an unexpected wizard at her side life was happy again.
Rabastan fled England before the final battle. Pureblood ideals never set right with him and to fight children was even worse. Knowing the only way to end the atrocities was to switch sides, which was a death sentence, Rabastan became one of The Order’s best sources of information.
Rabastan feelings started growing for the curly haired witch from the moment he met her. Her brilliance was widely known, but vastly understated. Hermione became the only Order member he would confide in. Once he proved himself a traitor to the Dark Lord, he gained her full trust and admiration for taking such risks-which she mentioned often.
Once the end was near, Rabastan knew he couldn’t stay in England and survive. Only a few Order members knew he was on their side, the fewer who knew the better. Severus was still a spy, but had a larger part to play and couldn’t protect Rababstan from either side.
In the weeks leading up to the end of the war, Hermione secured a small cabin in Norway for Rabastan to wait for her. Already knowing she wouldn’t stay in England if she survived, Hermione wanted a safe place to go. And now Rabastan would be there waiting for her.

Standing on the same porch from all those years ago, Fenrir shook himself out of his thoughts of all he had lost as a teenager. Turning to head back inside, he reached for the door handle as his mate pushed the door open. She always seemed to know when he needed her. Holding up a mug of spiced hot chocolate, Hermione smiled and reached up to kiss his cheek as Rabastan followed with an arm full of warm blankets.
After all he had done, after all that had been done to him-he found love in the most unexpected way. Hermoine and Rabastan had walked into his life by accident after the war. He was thought to be dead, she was trying to put the tragedies of the war behind her. Rabastan had disappeared before the final fight began. Feeling the pull to forgive and move forward, Fenrir invited them to join him for the first sunset of the season. Hermione agreed as long as she could make him hot chocolate.
Five years later, Fenrir, Hermoine, and Rabastan lived in his family’s home making memories of their own.
