The Smash Invitation

Summary:

Scrimblo isn't your typical gaming franchise in high school. He's funny, quirky, and is a charming western platforming character. He's also been waiting his entire life to be invited into Smash, and this might be his lucky day.

Based on stupid twitter discourse.

Notes:

Slight bias for Popular McJRPGGuy my bad.

Work Text:

Scrimblo stared at his reflection in the mirror. He was getting ready for school for the day, and he had to look his best.

His long, purple hair was ruffled, and his clothes were too big for his short stature, but Scrimblo liked it that way. He preferred the quirky design.

Once he was done getting ready, Scrimblo worked his way downstairs and into the dining room, but he didn’t expect anyone to make him breakfast or anything. He didn’t have anyone looking after him in over 11 years, and some people claimed it was a part of being a “neglected franchise,” whatever that meant.

After eating some collectathon fruit for breakfast, he walked out the door and down the street toward his school’s bus stop. There was someone else there too, it was Fighty McPuncherson. They weren’t really friends or anything, but they were acquainted. Fighty was a little too much into martial arts. That weirded him out a bit, so Scrimblo usually stayed his distance.

“Hey Scrimblo,” Fighty said. “I heard they were handing out Smash invitations today.”

“Yeah, I know. Hope you get in” Scrimblo said back.

“You too man”

The bus soon arrived, and the two of them entered the bus. As Scrimblo walked in and sat by himself, he thought to himself about the Smash invitations. He would obviously have to get in, right? He was beloved by many. Even if he wasn’t the most popular guy in school, he was iconic! How could they not invite him?

After a trip that felt like an eternity, the bus finally arrived at his high school and everyone got off and pilled into school. It was going to be another boring day of high school, wasn’t it? Maybe if he ended up getting the Smash invitation, it would be the best day of his life!

Scrimblo anxiously walked through the halls of school before class started. Once he made it there, he slowly turned the combination lock in anticipation. All the people who got invited to Smash got their invitations in their lockers, so it would be the same here, right?

He opened the locker, and in there were his textbooks, folders, and gimmicky projectiles. No letter in sight.

This had to be a mistake right? They obviously had to let him in Smash! Who could they possibly let in instead?

From the corner of his eye, he spotted a lean figure towering over him. Scrimblo let out a sigh. Even without looking at his oddly designed armor, he could still tell who it was. Popular McJRPGGuy, one of the most popular people in school. Scrimblo never understood why he was so popular, yet he had numerous friends, had a stupidly handsome appearance, and alongside that, he had the best grades in his class. Unlike Scrimblo, he was good with numbers and statistics. Scrimblo wasn’t deemed cool enough to hang around him, so he could only admire him from a distance.

“Whatcha doing, nerd?” Popular spat.

“N- Nothing, Popular,” Scimblo responded weakly.

Popular leaned in a little closer, arm resting on the locker next to him. Because of his new position, Scrimblo was able to gaze closer at his features. Black spiky hair, almost crimson orbs, and armor that complemented his muscles and abs. His features made Scrimblo’s heart flutter.

Popular scoffed. “Well look what I got, Scrimblo.”

For a second, Scrimblo didn't have a clue of what he was talking about, but then he let out a gasp. In Popular’s hand was a white letter with a gleaming red crest. Almost everyone would know what it is.

It was the Smash invitation.

Scrimblo’s mouth gaped open in awe. Really? Did they invite him in Smash over him? He was just another sword fighter!

In response to silence, Popular laughed at him, and it made Scrimblo’s fur raise. Why did he always have to tease him like this? He probably knew how badly he wanted to Smash, and he probably knew how jealous he was of Popular at the moment. Scrimblo was always jealous of his recent popularity and the handsome design that made people thirst over him online. Stupid Popular McJRPGGuy.

“Oh, you didn't get an invitation?” Popular spoke. “Sorry, I just assumed you did. Then again, you are a neglected franchise, they would have to be insane to let you in.”

Scrimblo’s hand curled into a fist from the rage at the moment. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to start a fight. Some students started to gather around the commotion. Scrimblo even spotted Fighty McPuncherson in the crowd. Hopefully, he would be here to support him, but he didn’t move an inch. Coward. Jerk.

Scrimblo locked eyes with Popular and held his gaze. His heart was starting to race as he got more nervous. If they were going to start a fight, Scrimblo could probably hit him back with projectiles. It would keep some distance from his sharp, long sword. He didn't even want to fight Popular, he was too strong and Scrimblo would still be a nervous wreck.

Thankfully, the bell rang, alerting the school that class had started. Because of that, the small crowd that gathered dispersed. Scrimblo sighed in relief and he brushed his long locks of purple hair back and picked up his green backpack before he headed for class. However, Popular McJRPGGuy still remained and had his attention focused on Scrimblo.

Popular’s face was dangerously close, and Scrimblo couldn’t hide the blush on his face

“I’ll be seeing you later. Oh wait, but I guess not in the Smash tournament.”

“See you later too, Popular,” Scrimblo stumbled out, and Popular strode away.

Scrimblo was filled with conflicting emotions. Jealousy and envy, but with some awe. He wanted to Smash so badly in place of Popular, but at the same time, he wanted to Smash with him too.

“One day…” Scrimblo muttered under his breath. “I will join Smash with Popular McJRPGGuy. Maybe in the next fighter pass, if that's what it takes.” And then, he walked towards his class.
