Chapter Text
Sam never remembered talking to Death after he died, the idea that Death was speaking to him personally was nerve racking in itself. The universe wanted him to die, and for the longest time Sam wanted to die too. Sam pressed his fingers against the palm of his hand. “I-” He was interrupted by a bright glowing light outside of the cabin.
Death rolled his eyes and took a sip out of a teacup. “I should’ve known Dean wouldn’t have given up that easily, should’ve gotten straight to the point and we would’ve been done already.”
Sam snapped his head up in Death’s direction, “What do you mean?”
“What I mean to say is that your brother is a stubborn child.” A child who thinks he can make the universe into the way he thinks it should be. Death was growing tired of the Winchesters playing with things they didn’t understand, it made his job rather difficult.
The door was kicked open to reveal a man that had to be roughly Sam’s age. The man’s eyes flash blue to reveal that it wasn’t a man, but an angel. “Perhaps you will reap Samuel another day.”
Death didn’t look up from his cup. “Perhaps, but that is up to the boy.”
“Who are you?” Sam asked the angel, getting up from the chair and slowly walking around to meet him face to face.
The angel seemed to hesitate. “My name is E- Gadreel.” He said, deciding to say his real name. He knew Dean wanted to trick Sam into consent initially, but he wanted to do things the right way for once. The right way involved being honest.
“The angel who let the snake in the garden?” Sam went to confirm.
Death stopped messing around with his teacup, placing it on the coffee table he looked up at the angel almost intrigued.
“I didn’t want for any of this to happen, anyone would have fallen for the Devil’s deception.” Gadreel was quick to defend himself. He hated himself for centuries, eons even, but with everything he suffered in the dungeons of Heaven he came to learn that none of this was fair.
Sam almost went to sympathize with him, knowing all too well what Lucifer was capable of. He stuck to business, knowing Death wouldn’t wait around forever. “What do you want?” Death said this had something to do with Dean, he hoped the idea wasn’t ridiculous.
“I can save you, if you deny whatever Death has offered you won’t be in a vegative state and you can continue life as normal.” He offered.
“Yeah, and what’s the price?” Sam asked, narrowing his eyes.
Gadreel held his hands up honestly, “There is no price. I only want to do what is right.”
Sam looked at Death longingly, answering Gadreel with a heavy chest. “No…” He started boldly, “Keeping me alive isn’t the right thing to do.” He continued confidently. He went to walk back to Death, “You should go, save somebody who deserves it.”
“You wanted to die with the intention of shutting the gates.” Gadreel started, and Sam stopped. “You’re desperate, I sense.” Gadreel almost found himself stating it as if he was asking.
Gadreel took a step forward and Sam turned around. “There is more to life than being a hero or what you’ve done. Seeing the world after being locked up for all that time I see that now. You and me, we aren’t too different from each other. Maybe we can find purpose in this world together.”
Death stood up, he was leaving and Sam was running out of time to decide. He knew the only reason Death stayed this long- Hell, even showed up, was because of the sheer amount of times that both the Winchesters had cheated Death.
Sam wanted to say go with Death so bad, he wanted that release and he wanted the earth to be free of him. What Gadreel said next made up Sam’s mind, “You don’t owe your brother to stay, stay for yourself and it will get better.”
Sam turned his head to Death, “Another day.” and Death nodded in return, “I look forward to it, my boy.”
He snapped his head in Gadreel’s direction, “Let’s blow this popsicle stand.”
