"I think anyone who has known Tetsurou and Kenma since they were teenagers is not surprised at all to see them here today with matching suits and smiles," Yaku spoke, eyeing the couple fondly. "Well maybe a little surprised, considering Tetsurou probably would have never gotten the balls to confess. Did you guys know Kenma confessed first? You better be counting your blessings,Tetsu-chan. You have such a remarkable guy preventing you from dying old and alone," he teased, to which the hall erupted in laughter.
"Don't make fun of me on my wedding day!" Kuroo pouted, but stopped when Kenma gave him a small kiss on the cheek.
"Like I said, I've known these two idiots since high school, and I can, with complete confidence, say that watching these two be utterly in love with one another and not realize the feelings were mutual was so incredibly painful that I'm pretty sure I lost a few years off my life." Kai, Taketora, Bokuto and Hinata laughed especially loud at that.
"To be honest, when I first met Tetsurou, I already thought Kenma was his boyfriend considering he never shut up about him. He would talk nonstop about his beloved 'best friend.' I could probably list Kenma's favorite hobbies, food, and blood type before I even met the guy. When I finally met him, it was clear that the two of them had a special kind of chemistry, on and off the volleyball court. They really understood each other. I kind of thought they were aliens from the way they could communicate telepathically. But alas, I felt like I had a front row seat to the show 'Tetsurou is in Love with His Best Friend but Refuses To Do Anything About It." He could have sworn he heard Kuroo mutter "that's a terrible show name" but chose to ignore it. "I had to watch this idiot pine, stare from afar, complain, whine, cry, and be, quite literally, the most dramatic person on earth when it came to all things Kenma. Pretty pathetic, no?" He laughed.
"You're so embarrassing!" Kuroo shoved his hands in his face, the tips of his ears were bright red.
Yaku just waved him off and continued, "In all sincerity, I think I speak for everyone for how happy we are for the two of you. A lot of us have had the privilege of watching you grow as individual people, and as a couple. You always bring out the best in one another, and I really can't think of anyone else who isn't more meant to be than you guys." Yaku paused before going on, "Your paths have been intertwined from the start of your lives. You would not be the people you are today if it wasn't for the other person, and that kind of love and support is something most people spend their entire lives yearning for. But, you two have always had each other, and we couldn't possibly be happier for you." Yaku smiled, Kuroo was already tearing up, Kenma rubbing his arm soothingly.
Yaku raised his glass, "Congratulations guys, I love you both very much." There wasn't a dry eye in the house as Yaku finished his speech. He went over to the long table where the couple were sitting and gave them both hugs. Kuroo openly sobbed into his shoulder while Yaku whispered, "Pull it together man."
Kuroo and Kenma had spent the morning at the shrine with their immediate family, trying to make it as similar to a real wedding as possible even though it holds no legal standing. Now, it was the evening of that same day where they're sitting in a large reception hall with all of their friends and extended family members. The two of them were sitting at a long table, their parents on either side of them, watching their friends give heartfelt (and slightly embarrassing) speeches.
They were dressed in matching black suits: Kenma was wearing a white tie, while Kuroo was wearing a red one. They each had a rose pinned to the front of their suits that was the color of the other's necktie. Kuroo's hair, by some miracle, was neatly combed, while Kenma's was pulled back in a bun, two french braids adorning the side with a couple of pieces of hair framing his face.
Their hands were intertwined under the table as they listened to their friends speak about them. Hinata spoke next, insisting that he deserves financial compensation and naming rights of any possible future children since he was the mastermind that got Kuroo and Kenma together (a detail that Kenma denies till this day). Bokuto tried to give a speech as well, although it was entirely incomprehensible due to how much he was crying, im jwost swho haAapPy fooooor yOou gwuYs. Akaashi eventually pulled him away, congratulating Kuroo and Kenma from the both of them, (to which Kuroo was especially happy because if anybody had embarrassing stories to tell about him, it was Bokuto).
Kenma smiled as he watched his friends speak about him and Kuroo. He looked up at Kuroo, his heart thumping against his chest almost painfully. Kuroo looked amazing, and Kenma was in awe that the man sitting next to him was officially his for the rest of their lives. He gently squeezed Kuroo's hand and leaned up so that his lips brushed his ear and whispered, "I love you so much."
Kuroo turns to him with slightly flushed cheeks and smiles, not his typical smirk or shit-eating grin, but a genuine smile that makes his eyes crinkle and his nose scrunch slightly. Kenma wraps his arms around Kuroo's arm, leaning his head on his shoulder as he continues to listen to the speeches. In this moment, he did not care that people were watching him, all that mattered was the man sitting right next to him.
The speeches wrapped up and slow music began to play through the speakers. Kuroo got up from his seat and peered down at Kenma.
"May I have this dance, Kuroo Kenma?" Kuroo extended his hand out for Kenma, bowing slightly. Kenma eagerly took it, and Kuroo planted a kiss on his knuckles. He led them both to the dance floor.
"I think Kozume Tetsurou has a better ring to it."
Kenma was partly joking, but Kuroo's eyes lit up in excitement, "You know what? I think you're right."
"It's the least you could do after that initial shitty proposal."
Kuroo gaped in mock offense, "Hey! I made up for it the second time around!"
Kenma chucked, "Yeah, you really did."
ONE YEAR PRIOR
Kenma was sitting in Kuroo's lap, his attention on the TV, hands on his controller as he mercilessly killed the villains onscreen. Kuroo's hands were in Kenma's hair, braiding random strands here and there. This had become a normal position for the two of them: Kenma gaming, while Kuroo insisting that he must practice different hairstyles on Kenma's hair if he wanted to keep it long. Every now and then, Kuroo would place feathery kisses on Kenma neck and shoulders, inhaling his lover's shampoo. Kenma would unconsciously lean back into his boyfriend's touch, feeling warmth rise up in his belly.
"Hey Kenma," Kuroo said, still braiding the younger boy's hair.
"Mm?" said Kenma, attention still focused on the game.
"Let's get married."
Kenma paused his game and looked up at Kuroo with furrowed brows, mouth slightly agape. He half expected Kuroo to have some stupid smirk on his face, but when he met his eyes, his face held nothing but ingenuity. "We can't even get legally married here," Kenma said carefully, still not entirely sure if Kuroo was joking or not.
"Yeah, I know that," Kuroo said, "I don't need a certificate or the government acknowledging you as my husband. But, I would still like a wedding, celebrating our love in front of our family and friends, you know?" He wanted to express his love for Kenma in a celebration with the people closest to them; the people who witnessed their relationship grow. He knew from the moment that he and Kenma got together, they would be spending the rest of their lives with one another, but having a ceremony felt like it would make it more concrete and official.
"You're being serious huh?" Kenma asked, to which Kuroo responded, "I have never been so sure of anything in my entire life."
Kenma shook his head and turned around so Kuroo couldn't see how flushed his face had gotten and the grin that he couldn't control. He wondered if Kuroo could hear how fast his heart was beating. Taking a few breaths to de-fluster himself, he said in a monotone voice, "That was the worst proposal ever."
"Is that a no?" Kuroo tried to make the question come off in a humorous way, but in actuality, he was terrified that Kenma would think it was stupid.
"If you want a whole ceremony, then I want a proper proposal," Kenma stated.
Kuroo's grin widened as he squeezed the smaller boy in his arms, peppering kisses all over his neck. "Just you wait Kozume, I'm going to blow your mind."
Kenma was eternally grateful that Kuroo couldn't see the way he was blushing. No matter how cool he kept his composure on the outside, he couldn't help but feel giddy at the thought that Kuroo would be his actual husband.
Kuroo did eventually live up his promise. He took Kenma on a private boat ride in the moonlight, where he proposed properly (he got down on one knee and everything). Kenma couldn't help but tear up as Kuroo slipped the gold ring onto his finger. Kuroo's hands were shaking slightly as he did so, tears blurring his vision as well. Kenma wrapped his arms around Kuroo's neck, while Kuroo pulled Kenma in by the waist until they were flush against each other. They stayed in each other's arms for a while, swaying gently under the stars, lost in their own world.
"I told you I would blow your mind."
"Should have done it the first time around."
Kuroo's arms tightened around Kenma as they danced with one another, slightly offbeat but not caring in the slightest. "You look so fucking good right now, you know that?" Kuroo whispered into Kenma's ear as he pulled him closer, "The only thing keeping me from getting hard is the fact that our grandparents are right there."
Kenma snorted, "Please never say 'getting hard' and 'our grandparents' in the same sentence ever again."
Soon other couples began to join the two of them on the dance floor, but Kenma didn't even notice. His eyes were shut as he rested his head in the crook of Kuroo's neck, while Kuroo swayed the two of them to the music. He kissed the top of Kenma's head and nuzzled his cheek into him, thumbs rubbing soothing circles onto Kenma's back. Kenma did not need anything else at this moment. In Kuroo's arms he felt safe; he felt loved; he was on cloud nine.
Kenma slowly opened his eyes and peered up at Kuroo, dark eyes already staring back at him. Kenma reached up to cup Kuroo's cheeks with his hands. Standing on his tippy toes, he kissed Kuroo's lips slowly, biting his bottom lip teasingly. He looked up at Kuroo through his eyelashes and grinned, "You're my husband."
"Well well, aren't you a lucky man?" Kuroo teased, which earned him a smack on his chest, before Kenma resumed his previous position, snuggling closer to the taller man. "Hasn't even been a full day, and I'm already regretting it," Kenma grumbled, knowing he was lying out of his ass right now.
Kuroo simply chuckled and pinched Kenma's ass, "Yeah, yeah I love you too...husband."
