Work Text:
Tooru has graduated. He has been in Argentina for a few months now working hard to improve his volleyball skills. He is getting ready to face his rival again on a greater stage, to show the world he is the best setter.
Everything is good. He is playing the sport he loves with new friends and teammates. Of course, he still keeps in touch with some of the Aoba Johsai players from high school. And he will always have his best friend, who decided to stay in Miyagi a bit longer before heading to America to study.
Everything is good.
Then he gets that phone call.
The name 'Iwa-chan' lights up his phone. Tooru excitedly grabs it, ignoring the dinner he is preparing. It has been a few days since he heard from his best friend.
"Hello Iwa-chan!" Tooru answers straight away.
The other end of the line is silent other than a few sniffles. Something is wrong.
"Iwa-chan?" he asks softly, confusion and worry clawing at his chest.
"Tooru..."
Oh no. He never uses that name unless it's serious. Something is wrong. What happened? Why is he so upset-
"It's Kageyama..." Iwaizumi replies with a voice rough from obvious crying.
Oikawa's heart drops.
No.
He doesn't hear much after that. There's static in his ears. All he can make out is "car crash" and "injuries were too severe" and "ceremony next week".
No.
The world has gone blurry. Oh, he's crying. He doesn't even know why. He hates (hated) Tobio-chan.
Please no.
The call ends and all he can do is slide to the kitchen floor. The tears won't stop. He wants to cry out, to scream, but he can't make a sound. He feels numb.
I wanted to beat you, he thinks. No... I just wanted to see you again.
He pictures beautiful blue eyes that have always looked at him- looked up to him. Challenged him in ways no one else can.
I wanted to meet those eyes across the court again.
That special place in his heart that has always held admiration and frustration for his rival now feels empty and hollow.
