Work Text:
"Aaaand that's the last of them." Yamada sets down the final box he's carted up the stairs, on top of two other equally heavy boxes full of Chihiro's books and notes and other school stuff. He shuts the door, toes off his shoes, and sinks down in front of the fan that was the first thing they unpacked when they got inside the apartment. It's a hot day, made hotter by the hard work of moving. "The truck's empty. How long do we have before the rental place closes up tonight?"
"An hour and a half." Chihiro comes out of the little kitchen—actually walled and curtained off from the living room, way fancier than the "stove and a sink against one wall" setup in Yamada's old place—carrying two cans of Pocari, the cold metal already wet from the hot air. He kneels much more gracefully next to Yamada and hands him one. "Here. And thank you for doing so much of the hard work! I feel like I should have carried more."
"Don't worry about it." Yamada pops open the can and takes a long drink, the tangy cold sweetness feeling like it's soaking right into his bones. "It just made sense, right? Letting you get set up in there so we'll be able to have homemade dinner. That's worth a little extra heavy lifting."
Chihiro gives him a tiny smile, like somehow he's still shy after everything they've shared. "Homemade dinner for our first night in our own apartment."
"Yeah." Yamada still can't entirely believe this is real, sometimes. He always figured eventually he'd find a girl to get serious with, to move in with, but it was never the right time, never felt right, never "the one"... and now here he is with a first-year university student, who's a guy, who makes his heart beat faster with every sweet look. He couldn't imagine not moving to stay close to Chihiro, and then moving in together just made more sense, never mind that it also made him giddy with happiness.
He puts his drink down and reaches out to brush a strand of hair off Chihiro's forehead, and Chihiro looks so sweet that turns into cupping his face and leaning in for a kiss. Chihiro makes a soft noise like that still takes him by surprise, eyes fluttering shut in just the cutest way as his lips part.
Yamada ought to be returning the moving truck before the rental place closes. He ought to be starting to set up furniture or unpack his things. Important, responsible things. But this is their first time making out in their new apartment, Chihiro's hand on his knee, Chihiro's tongue brushing his as Yamada kisses deeper.
That's pretty important too.
