Work Text:
“Martel!”
She turns at the call.
A boy runs up and hugs her tightly, like the world might end if he lets her go. A boy she doesn’t know. A face she’s never seen, but reminds her a little bit of the one who looks back in the mirror on a cold, dark night.
“I missed you, sis,” he whispers.
She pats his head and smiles. “You look lonely.”
“Not so much anymore.” His eyes shine. Like he knows her. Like he recognizes her.
It’s a little strange, and she’s quite not sure what to think of it. Or him.
But there is one thing she understands. This young stranger needs someone. “Were you going somewhere? Running away from something?”
The boy shakes his head. “I’ll go wherever you are.”
Martel doesn’t have a brother. But she wouldn’t mind being adopted.
