Chapter 1: Prom Kings

Chapter Text

"Sooooo...are you ready next week?"

"Depends. What's next week?"

Mingyu's friends suddenly stopped walking, expressions filled with both shock and offense.

"Mingyu!"

Mingyu looked up from his phone, only then realizing his friends weren't following him anymore.

"Huh? Was I walking too fast?"

The two girls glared at him, speed walking to catch up to him.

"Mingyu you little shit."

"Little, really Ems? You're calling me little?"

"Fuck you, you giant."

Ems pouted, crossing her arms accross her chest. The other girl, however, just smirked and asked the tallest out of them

"Hey Mingyu, did your head hurt from hitting it for the nth time today?"

The shorter just laughed as Mingyu just glared at the clap back.

"Oi Princess! That was one time!"

"Still happened."

The three of them walked towards their room silently for a few beats, before Ems remembered what they were talking about before.

"Hey, we were talking about next week!"

"Oh yeah! So, do you have any plans."

"Guys, I just told you that I have no idea what's happening next week."

"Prom, Mingyu. Prom is happening next week."

Mingyu just hummed, still scrolling on his phone.

"Mingyu! Can you pay attention!"

Mingyu stopped, surprised at his friend's outburst. The girls' twin glares with matching scowls making him gulp. Pocketing his phone, he looked at the girls.

"Okay, sorry. Will you please tell me what's going on next week. What's the big deal? It’s just prom."

Princess looked up at Mingyu, staring at him dead in the eye.

"Mingyu, when was the last time you looked at the announcement board?"

"Uhh...I don't know. Results week?"

"That was like, two months ago!"

"I'm sorry! Dudes, just tell me what's with next week? Why are you guys making it such a big deal?!"

"Because you're nominated as prom king you dingus!"

Mingyu stared at them, dumbfounded. A few beats passed quietly, before Mingyu rolled his eyes, face palming.

"Okay, which one of you did it? Or was it both of you?"

"Huh?"

"Which one of you guys nominated me?"

The girls looked at each other for a second before erupting in laughter. Mingyu looked at them blankly, watching his bestfriends collapse in laughter. Several students passed by them, glancing at the laughing girls. After what almost seemed like an eternity, their laughter finally subsided.

"You really have no idea how popular you are, huh?"

Mingyu raised an eyebrow in response. Shrugging, he answered

"You guys know I don't care about that."

"Yeah yeah. You don't care about being popular because you prefer keeping your social circle limited to those closest to you."

"Still, don't you get it? Neither Ems or I nominated you! It’s one of your supporters or fans or whatever they call themselves."

Mingyu sighed, resigning himself to his fate.

"And? What do you guys want me to do?"

Ems and Princess looked at each other, sharing a smirk.

"Well, we're going to campaign for you of course!"

"Yeah! We have to make sure you win over him!"

"Win over who?!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What do you mean I'm nominated as a prom king?! Who even nominated me?!"
"Soonyoung, will you calm down?"
"How am I supposed to calm down?! I don't even want to go to prom!"
Irene pushed her glasses up her nose, looking up from her book.
"Well, sadly, you don't have a choice. The teachers, for some odd reason, required everyone that's nominated for all of the programs to attend prom."
Soonyoung scowled, sinking further down in his seat.
"You are going with me right?"
"Soonyoung, what kind of best friend will I be if I let you suffer alone. But, I'm sure I'll piss off a few of your 'friends'. Not to mention the many people that wants to ask you as a date."
Irene just looked at Soonyoung who just groaned, face planting into the table. Hiding an amused grin, she patted Soonyoung's back in comfort.
"There, there. It’s not your fault half of the student body wants to date you."
"Irene, please do me a favor and stop talking about them."
"You're saying that as if it’s my fault they want you."
Soonyoung looked at his bestfriend who had her eyebrows raised. Sighing deeply, he leaned back, slouching on his chair.
"They say they want to date me because I'm pretty or whatever. That's literally so shallow. Besides, they're not my type."
Irene rolled her eyes, used to her best friend's rants about his admirers. Closing her book, she leaned back to watch him mutter insults. Sighing, she told Soonyoung
"Well, what are we doing for your campaign?"
Soonyoung looked at her blankly.
"What campaign."
"For the prom king thing. Jeez Soonyoung, keep up."
"I just said I do--"
"Hey Soonyoung hyung!"
Soonyoung and Irene looked over to the source of the voice, only to find the most popular junior in the school. For what reason, they don't know. Irene feeling like Soonyoung wasn't going to say anything, replied.
"Hello Mingyu. What can we help you with?"
"Oh, Irene noona! Nothing really. Just wanted to greet my opponent."
Soonyoung gasped in... surprise? Offense? Irene couldn't really tell.
"You're nominated as prom king?"
"Yep! Well, good luck hyung! I apologize in advance when I beat you. I have to go to my next class!"
Soonyoung and Irene watched the younger run off, a scowl on Soonyoung's face. The pair sat there silently, Irene opting to reopen her book.
The peace was broken when Soonyoung slammed his hands on the table. Irene looked at him over her glasses.
"Irene."
"Hmm."
"I have to win prom king."
============================
"Hey guys! Make sure you vote for Mingyu as this year's prom king, okay?"
"Look at this handsome face! Who wouldn't want to have him as our king, right?"
Mingyu stood there with a big smile, letting his best friends sweet talk their school mates into voting for him.
They continued for a few more minutes, Mingyu catching the attention of other students. Then suddenly, the attention shifted when a cluster of students around the corner started cheering. The crowd cleared a little bit, allowing Mingyu to see who it was. And there, standing in the center of the sea of students, is one Kwon Soonyoung.
"Oh hey Mingyu! Campaigning?"
Mingyu nodded at the question, an eyebrow raised in question.
"Cool! Me too!"
And the senior stood opposite him, with his own best friend campaigning for him, much like the two girls beside him were doing earlier.
Speaking of, his own best friends stood there, seething in anger.
"Really?! Right across from us?!"
"Not to mention he's getting all the attention from everyone!"
Mingyu watched the older from across him, getting fawned over by students from other years as well. His attention was then shifted to Princess and Ems when they gasped loudly.
"Huh?"
"Look!"
Mingyu followed the direction they were pointing to. It was Irene...smirking at them?
"Oh... it. is. on!"
"Come on Mingyu! There is no way you're losing!"
Ems and Princess took his elbows, pulling him from the scene. He looked back, making eye contact with Soonyoung for a second before he was pulled away.
===========================
"Are the fliers really necessary?"
"Of course they are Mingyu! Everybody needs to see your handsome face, so they'll vote for you!"
"I spent all night editing these, so you better appreciate them."
"...thank you, Princess."
~~~~~~

"Irene, don't you think posters are a bit much?"

"Are you kidding? Everybody has been talking about how cool Mingyu's fliers are! I'm not letting that go! Here, go staple some posters on that side."

~~~~~~
"They put up posters?! How much money did they spend for these?!"
"Nope! We have to do more! Let's post in the university website. I bet more people will see that instead of their posters."
"Girls, that's completely unnecessary."
"Shush!"
~~~~~~

"How'd they get the permission to post on the university website?! Oh heck no! Hey Soonyoung, what do you feel about being the cover of this month's university magazine issue?"

"Irene, that's so extreme."

"I know right? It’s such an awesome idea."

~~~~~~
"Front cover?! How did they even do that?"
"I think Irene is editor in chief?"
"Mingyu, she wasn't actually asking."
"Oh..."
"Hey, how do you feel about banners?"
"Ems nO--"
“Ems YES!”
~~~~~~

"Oh they think they're the only ones that can do banners? I'll prove them wrong! In fact, I'll make one even bigger!"

"Irene don--"

=============================

"Mingyu? What's wrong. You look tired."

Mingyu sighed, running his hands through his hair.

"Yeah, we've been campaigning for tomorrow night this past week. I think Ems and Princess took it a bit too seriously."

"Well, that’s how it is son. Go up to your room and rest, okay?"

Mingyu nodded, going up to his room. He took a shower and changed his clothes before dropping down on his bed. Just as he was about to fall asleep, he heard his phone beep. Pulling it out, he read the text he received.

From: Unknown (+xxxxxxxxxx)

Hey! Good luck for tomorrow! I voted for you. You're the king for me

Mingyu grinned, feeling extremely grateful for the good luck message, not even questioning who sent the message. Quickly replying, he returned his phone and laid back down, letting white noise lull him to sleep.

================================

"Well don't you look dashing?"

"Thank you. You two look very pretty. And you look taller! How high are your heels?"

"We're not short! You're just too tall!"

Mingyu snickered at his best friend's reply. Looking at them, they did truly look beautiful. Their dresses complimenting their beautiful features.

"Really though, you guys look beautiful."

The girls smiled at him brightly.

"Thank you. Well, let's get this show on the road!"

"Let's get inside!"

"Shall we?"

Arms linked together, the trio went inside the venue. The place itself was beautifully decorated. Strings of fairy lights and beautiful lanterns gave the room the subtle glow. Flowers adorned the tables, as well as the stage.

"Woah...it’s so beautiful."

"It really is. They did such a great job."

Before Mingyu can comment on the place, a voice filled the room.

"Hello students! Good evening!"

Cheers filled the room as they all went nearer to the stage.

"Wow, everyone is looking absolutely stunning tonight!"

More cheers filled the venue, the trio of friends joining in.

"Alright! Now you may all be wondering why I'm here, talking your ears off instead of letting everybody dance. However! I have a very good reason."

The emcee smiled at the crowd, making everyone more curious.

"Well, the senior class actually planned and suggested this. So basically, we want to make a new tradition."

From the side of the stage, one of the senior girls came up holding a crown. Chatters filled the room as soon as they realized what was going on.

"Yes, everyone! We will be crowning the prom king and queen for tonight. And then, our royalties will start off the party with a first dance. Does that sound good?"

Cheers of agreement and whoops of 'yes'es was the overwhelming response.

"Alright, let's get started! Can all of the prom king nominees proceed in front?"

With a push from his friends, Mingyu went up the stage. He felt more than saw Soonyoung stand beside him, the shorter having such an overwhelming aura that you can't really help but notice.

"Okay! Winning with only a point difference, the prom king is..."

Mingyu can see his friends from the stage, both cheering him on. Looking to their left, he saw Irene cheering on Soonyoung. Smiling back at them, he stood there with his chin up, not letting his failu--

"Mingyu!"

Wait what?

Mingyu looked at the emcee that was going closer to him, putting the plastic crown on his head. He looked down at his friends, both jumping from happiness. He spared a glance at Irene, who was looking at the person beside him with concern.

Soonyoung

"Hey, congrats."

"Soonyoung hyung..."

The older smiled at him, making him smile back.

"Thank you hyung"

Soonyoung nodded before turning to leave the stage.

"Our prom king! Please take a bow before proceeding to your place at the center of the dance floor."

Mingyu obeyed the emcee's instructions, going down towards the small dance floor. Watching from his place, he saw the emcee furrow his brow in confusion.

"Wow, okay it seems that something new also happened this year!"

The people around them murmured in confusion.

"Well, it seems that no one voted for a prom queen! We were all so absorbed in voting for a prom king that the prom queen nominees forgot to campaign! Oops!"

The students giggled, some of them finding it amusing.

"So! We actually have two prom kings! Our prom king is...Soonyoung!"

The room erupted into cheers once again, when Soonyoung went up the stage, receiving a flower crown. Mingyu himself felt his cheeks strain from how wide he was laughing.

"You can join our prom king on the dance floor."

Soonyoung went down, going to meet Mingyu at the center of the dance floor.

Mingyu grinned even wider, spreading his arms open. At this motion, Soonyoung ran up to him, jumping into his arms. Mingyu held the older around his thighs, with Soonyoung's arms supporting himself with Mingyu's shoulders. Staring into each other's eyes, Mingyu spun him around a few times before gently setting him down, wrapping his arms around his waist. From the corner of his eye, Mingyu can see his best friends and Soonyoung's best friend watching them with surprised expressions. Before any of them can come over, the muusic started to play. With his hands on Soonyoung's waist and Soonyoung's arms around his neck, they swayed side to side.

"Hey, congratulations."

"Congratulations to you, too."

Mingyu turned to focus all his attention on Soonyoung.

"So there goes our plan of ditching prom and going to stargazing."

"I wouldn't say that. I still have the brightest star in front of me."

Soonyoung giggled, face darkening with a deep blush.

"After three years, and still such a sap."

"You've been in love with me for three years, so I must be doing this right."

"Of course. You said it yourself, I deserve the best."

"And do you think you have the best?"

Soonyoung smiled brightly at him, eyes crinkled to the crescent moon shapes Mingyu loved so much.

"I mean, you are crowned the king for a reason you know."

"Ahhh. You're right."

"Of course I am."

"You know, I probably wouldn't have won if you didn't vote for me."

"I'm your boyfriend, why wouldn't I vote for you?"

"Fair. For the record, Princess wrote one my voting slip. If it was up to me, I'd vote for you too."

"Don't worry about it. It all worked out in the end."

Mingyu smiled softly, brushing a stray hair away from his face.

"As it always does."

Feeling people's eyes on them, Mingyu suddenly felt a surge of confidence.

"Hyung?"

"Hmm?"

"I love you."

Before the older can reply, he swooped down to kiss Soonyoung's lips. He can hear gasps and outraged cries, but he paid them no mind, focusing instead on the feeling of Soonyoung's lips against his.

They kissed for a few more minutes before Soonyoung pulled away. Panting, Soonyoung hid his face on Mingyu's muscular chest. Chuckling, Mingyu only pulled him closer.

"Happy anniversary, Soonyoung hyung."

"Happy Anniversary, Mingyu."

Both of them smiled, not even noticing the crowd of people around them.

They'll deal with that later.
