Work Text:

Thrown against the floor are four different things that Midorima has given to Takao in the past.

The first one is a pocket calendar. This particular calendar is nothing special. There’s nothing written in it, actually, the dates are blank and the corners are tidy and the lines are so clean that it breaks his heart a little. The calendar reflects nothing and reveals nothing and acts as a barrier rather than a means to approach the limit at which he will begin to think desperate thoughts, which is okay by Takao’s standards but probably unqualified in some way for Midorima. Midorima is weird like that. Takao understands it better than anyone else.

The second one is a shirt. The shirt is blue and button-down, most likely brand name and definitely expensive because Midorima likes to do this dumb thing where he spends too much money on Takao and Takao tries to pretend that it means more to him that he could ever let on. It isn’t as big of a deal as Takao tries to make it out to be–Midorima is neither frugal nor lavish about his spendings, despite having reason to be as lavish as he wants to. It’s his money. He can spend it however he wants. Takao tells him so.

The third one is a letter that Midorima has written by hand. There are some words in it that do not make sense and some that make too much sense in the world, famous words and cold words and pink words and grey words. There aren’t enough words in the Japanese language to express Midorima’s thoughts because he’s the only one who insists that he is twisted beyond belief. No amount of love stories on Takao’s part will convince him of it otherwise, which leaves Takao with–

–the fourth object on the ground, Midorima’s heart.

“You can have all of these things back,” says Takao. “I don’t want them.”

His intent is cold, the conceit is proper. Despite this, Midorima levels with him. “Keep it. I won’t need these things anymore, anyway.”

He kneels down on the floor and takes a small box out from the cavity in his chest where he’d held his heart and places that on top of the pocket calendar, as well, and leaves the door open on his way out.
