Work Text:

A light knock on her classroom door made Fuyumi jump, the sound surprising.

"Akari-chan?" She blinked, clutching the book to her chest. Fuyumi was planning on heading over to her friend's classroom in just a moment, but Akari was here early... Something had to be wrong.

Fuyumi swallowed, pressing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. Her hand fell to her slightly swollen stomach reflexively. "Is everything alright?"

"Uhm... well... It's Miu-chan. She's been crying nonstop. I tried to walk her over here to you, but... she wouldn't budge," Akari explained. "She kept begging for you or her father, and normally I know I shouldn't cave, but she seems to be in a lot of pain?"

Fuyumi's eyes widened behind her glasses as Akari spoke. "Pain?" Fuyumi asked, dumping her books into her large tote bag.

"Yes... she kept mentioning her back?" Akari said, gesturing to her upper back. "Did something happen?"

"Her... back?" Fuyumi stared for another moment before letting out a loud gasp. "Oh no..." She dropped her tote onto her chair and ran past Akari.

"What? Yumi-chan!" Akari called after her while Fuyumi dashed to the other classroom.

She slid the door open, immediately looking at her wailing daughter on the ground. Her long blonde hair was messy, the white tips flipping about in various directions. Her turquoise eyes were puffy and red; she’d obviously been crying for a bit. "M-Mommy!" she sniffled, wiping off her nose with the back of her hand.

"Oh, sweetheart," Fuyumi said, rushing to her side, her face full of sympathy. "What happened?"

"It hurts!" she said, wailing loudly. She flopped against Fuyumi, clinging to her hard.

She cupped her daughter’s cheeks, brushing aside the tears rolling down her face. "I know, Miu. Can you tell Mommy where it hurts?" She spoke softly, running her fingers through the little girl's hair.

Miu gestured to her back with her finger, still sniffing, her shoulders bouncing with her tiny sobs.

"Your back?" Fuyumi asked, gently ghosting her hand over her daughter's dress. "I think I know what's going on and it's going to be okay, but how about we go home and call Daddy, okay?"

The little girl nodded, wrapping her arms around Fuyumi's neck, clinging to her. She scooped her up, carrying her back to her classroom as she grabbed her bag. "I'm taking her home," Fuyumi said, nodding at Akari. "Can you combine our students for the rest of the afternoon? Their parents should be here soon." She gestured her head to the two little boys sitting in the middle of the carpet, playing with some toys.

"Of course, Yumi-chan." Akari smiled, stepping forward towards Miu. "We'll see you soon, okay Miu-chan?"

Miu buried her face against Fuyumi's neck, nodding up and down. She was still crying, but thankfully her wailing had died down.

Fuyumi bowed to her friend, moving herself out of the classroom. She knew Akari could handle the small amount of students left.

"Let's get home, Miu," she whispered, not wanting to waste any time.

~~

It took Fuyumi a bit to get her daughter in the car, the girl fighting against her as she tried to put her in her car seat. Being pregnant didn't help matters either, as she was already feeling exhausted for the day. "Miu, please," she said. "The faster we get home, the faster we can call Daddy, okay?"

As difficult as it was, Fuyumi loved being a mother. Miu was the light of her life, and even when she fought with her or cried, Fuyumi knew she could handle it. She handled a classroom of students Miu's age, so handling her own daughter was plenty doable. Well, most of the time. It didn't help that Keigo's energy was a vital part of her personality.

"It hurts!" she said, kicking her legs up and down, rolling her back against the car seat.

"I know, sweetheart," she whispered. "I know it does, but you need to calm down, okay?"

Fuyumi tried her best not to panic. She had a feeling this back pain had to do with her quirk, but this was way out of the realm of her expertise. She needed to call Keigo immediately, and she prayed he wasn’t busy.

In the backseat, Miu wiggled against the car seat, whining, tears streaming down her face. The last thing Fuyumi wanted was to see her little girl in pain. Still, it would do her no good to try and help when her husband was the one with the similar quirk.

Yes, it was very obvious to Fuyumi that Miu was going to take after her father. It had been since the day she could walk and began to dash around their penthouse. The pain in her back was most likely due to wings that hadn't sprouted. She only hoped Keigo had gone through something similar.

~~

Keigo hated meetings. They were boring and useless, and he'd been dealing with them for over ten years. Even running his own agency, he somehow still had to listen regardless of whether or not missions involved him.

"What do you think, Hawks?" Tokoyami looked at him intently. After all these years, he thought Tokoyami would maybe loosen up, but the younger bird had done anything but. On the contrary, being a pro had only made him more intense.

"Mmm," Keigo yawned, bouncing his feet against the table. "I dunno... You seem to have a better handle on this villain than I do."

Honestly, he didn't like to be in charge; he preferred to take out villains, get work done, and then relax. But after everything with the PLF and the revamping of hero society, Keigo was in charge of too much.

"But I-"

As Tokoyami began to speak, Keigo's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, frowning when he saw Fuyumi's name. She didn't call him when he was at work normally, nor when she was busy.

"Hello?" He picked up the phone, despite the frustrated look on Tokoyami's face. Flipping his feet down off of the desk, he turned in his chair. "What? 'Yumi, slow down." He glanced toward Tokoyami, standing up from his chair. "Yeah. Of course. I'll be home in a second."

Pushing himself up out of his chair, Keigo shoved his phone into his pocket. "Duty calls, Tsukuyomi!" he said, saluting the other bird.

"Wait, Hawks-"

He hopped over to the balcony, jumping over the edge, flapping his wings as he hovered by the window. "Family emergency!"

And with that, he left a rather disgruntled Tokoyami behind.

~~

Keigo prided himself on being one of the fastest heroes there was, and though his rank wasn't as high as it used to be, his speed was unmatched. He could cut through the sky faster than any of the younger heroes, and there was a part of him that was truly proud of it. It was quite a useful skill, especially when his wife needed him home pronto.

He landed on the upper deck that jut out from their penthouse apartment, immediately tucking his wings against his back.

Keigo could see Fuyumi inside, her arms wrapped around their small daughter. She was bouncing her up and down, stroking at her back. His eyes fell to her pregnant stomach, wondering what their second child would be like. Would they also go through this? Or maybe they would have an ice quirk like their mother...

With the amount of warmth Keigo felt in his chest looking at the scene, he could've melted right there on the deck. Keigo never expected to be a family man, but with Fuyumi, he would've given her anything she wanted, and he’d found this was what he wanted too. He knew this wasn't the time to be gushing over his family, but he simply couldn't help it.

He rushed up to the slider, pulling it open. "Fuyumi."

"Daddy!" Miu wailed, throwing her head back in what appeared to be agony. Though Keigo knew his daughter could be somewhat dramatic, he did recall how painful it was, sprouting his own wings.

"Keigo," Fuyumi breathed, her eyes trembling. Fuyumi had a bit of an overprotective streak when it came to their daughter. She was overly cautious, despite Keigo reminding her they couldn't protect Miu from every little thing.

"C'mere," he said, moving his fingers as he walked toward her. "I'll help her."

"Please," Fuyumi whimpered.

Keigo chuckled softly, gently rubbing his daughter's back as he lowered her down to the floor. She sniffled, fat tears streaming down her cheeks. He knew it wasn't right to think she looked cute when she was in so much pain, but he knew exactly what was going on and had to stifle a small laugh.

"Miu," he said, kneeling down. He brushed a hand across her cheek, wiping away a stream of her tears. "Look at me, look at Daddy."

"No!" she replied, folding her arms across her chest. Her lips curled into a pout and she pulled her arms up a bit, wincing at the pain in her back.

He reached forward and cupped her cheeks, turning her face towards him. "You can't fight it, Angel," he smirked. "Didn't you say you wanted to be like me?" He opened up his wings, flapping them back and forth.

"I'm not fighting it!" she snapped, though the conviction in her anger was mostly gone. Her upper lip trembled, a second dam of water held back by her quivering jaw.

"I know you are, Angel," he said, gently stroking through her hair. "I did the same thing when I was your age."

Her round turquoise eyes blinked, staring at him. "I-I'm not, Daddy! I swear," she whimpered. "I-It just hurts." A few more hiccups made her chest bounce and she sank down to her knees. "I can't do it!"

"Keigo!" Fuyumi gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. She began to kneel down, but Keigo held up his hand, stopping her.

"It's okay," he said, "I know, it's really painful. But I'm going to talk you through it. I had the same thing happen to me."

"I-I don't know why it hurts," she whined. She began to rock back and forth, and Hawks could tell her little body wasn't going to be able to handle it for much longer.

"Because, Angel, I think you're getting your quirk and you're going to have wings." He placed his palm flat against the surface of her back. Gently, he tugged on the zipper of her dress. He stroked over her skin, the tiny muscles twitching. "But you have to allow them to come out."

"I can't, Daddy," she whimpered, shaking her head. Her tiny palms clutched over her ears. "I can't!"

"You can, Angel," he whispered, gently stroking her back. He would never forget how painful it was when his own wings tore through his skin, the bones in his back rearranging. No one had been there to help him through it, so he was grateful he could at least help his daughter.

Beneath his palm, he could feel the bones rolling under her skin. It was almost time. Gently, he cupped her cheeks and tilted her face up to look at him. "Gimme your hands, Miu."

"O-Okay..." She whimpered, raising her tiny palms up to place them in Keigo's.

"I need you to take a deep breath in, and then let it go. When you do, I'll do it too and both of us can spread our wings, okay?" he said.

"I-I'll try..." She hiccuped, clinging to Keigo's hands.

"Alright," he smiled. "You can do this!" He loved cheering her on, and as painful as it was going to be, he couldn't wait to teach her how to use her wings. "In," he said, pulling a lot of air in and then, "out," he sighed, exhaling, letting his wings flow out behind him.

Miu did the same, her little body trembling when she exhaled, though no wings yet.

"One more time," he whispered. She repeated the motion with him, pulling in another deep breath. This time, when they released, she screamed. Her little fingernails dug into the palms of Keigo's hand and he watched her back arch. There was a tear in her dress, despite his attempt at saving it, as tiny red and white wings tore through the fabric. The feathers spread out behind her, spanning a bit longer than her shoulders.

"Oh!" Fuyumi gasped. "Miu, you did it!"

"I did it?!" Miu trembled, blinking as she stared up at Keigo.

"You did," he smiled. "Beautiful red and white wings. How lucky!"

"I-I did it!" She cheered loudly, attempting to glance behind at her back. She turned in a circle, trying to get a good look at her wings. "Daddy, Daddy! I have wings like you!" She jumped up and down, waving them around and flapping them, but stopped, wincing a little.

"I see that, Angel! We'll have to start your flying lessons soon, but calm down for now. They're still going to hurt for a little bit," Keigo explained.

Instead of listening, she immediately rushed to her mother. "Mommy, do you see?!"

"I do! You look beautiful, sweetheart." Fuyumi bent down, scooping Miu up in her arms. "My beautiful daughter, with wings as pretty as her father's."

"And some white ones in there to represent her mother," Keigo smirked, gesturing to the multi-colored feathers on their daughter's back.

Fuyumi smiled, shaking her head. "Let's take it easy now, okay?"

"Okay, Mommy," Miu sighed, her lips curling into a pout. Keigo had a feeling her back was still aching as she stopped fluttering them. She would have to take it easy for the next few days, but soon she'd be flying around the house just like he had. He could only imagine what disasters that would lead to.

"Thank you," Fuyumi whispered.

Keigo couldn't help but chuckle as he walked toward both of his girls. He wrapped his arms around them, pressing his nose against Miu's cheeks. "Tomorrow we can talk about starting some flying lessons. Whaddya say, Miu?" He chuckled, gently tickling at her stomach.

A loud giggle slipped through her lips and Miu grabbed at Keigo's cheeks. "Okay, Daddy."

He couldn't wait to see how perfect his daughter would look in the sky.
