Unsure of what to expect when he was Sorted, Rubeus Hagrid was surprised to join the Hufflepuffs. Still, his da was proud of him getting into the school and making friends. Two other first years, Mary and Edward, seemed willing to help him with the strange and dangerous animals that would attract and be attracted to young Hagrid.
Of course, he wasn’t about to leave them alone no matter how dangerous his friends (and the Ministry) claimed the creatures were. To him, they were just misunderstood, like him with his giantess mother who abandoned her family. His friends were determined to get him help. They spoke with the prefects who then spoke with their Head of House who managed to get Hagrid in contact with both the gamekeeper and Care of Magical Creatures professor. It seemed the more dangerous the Ministry proclaimed a creature; the more likely Hagrid was to either attract or be attracted to it.
When his da passed away, Hagrid was never happier to have been Sorted to Hufflepuff. He didn’t think he’d have avoided the orphanage otherwise. With how often he managed to stumble over “dangerous creatures,” Hagrid was also positive he would have been expelled in his third year, but instead he was introduced to Newt Scamander because of the acromantula egg he’d found. Newt was willing to help him get the acromantula settled somewhere safe and get Hagrid set on course for a job as a mythozoologist.
