Danganronpa Despair Deluxe: The Starved Stuntwoman

Summary:

A look at one of the Remnants of Despair. Features an interview with Akane Owari and a couple short fics. Come take a look at the starving acrobat in the field, and see how the bond of Class 77-B still stands strong when one of their own makes a poor decision. Though their view of support has been a bit... twisted.

Notes:

This is my one of my works for the Danganronpa Despair Deluxe fanzine - a lot darker than the last one I worked with, but still a lot of fun! I always headcanon'd that Akane's love of food was twisted into borderline starvation as a Remnant - and that things like pain and fatigue only drove them all on rather than made them weaker. I put that all together here to take a look at what Akane's role was amongst her group, as well as show what might happen when a hatred for food reaches its logical conclusion.

Chapter 1: Interview

Chapter Text

<Mahiru here. It was impossible to track Akane down, given she’s always out and about seeking targets. I did manage to catch her between expeditions, thankfully, and directed her into a dimly lit side room to have a few words. Not that I expect many from her. My interviewee hadn’t eaten for over a week prior to our meeting. While this would subdue most people, it seemed to make Akane stronger, faster… deadlier. Who knows, perhaps the hunger pains and despair drive her on? She isn’t very talkative when she’s hungry, though. Yet, I’d still say it was a (mostly) successful interview.)>

Let’s start with the big one. What does despair mean to you?

Despair…?

<She was quiet a couple moments.>

Despair… is strength. Strength to ignore limits. To never lose a fight… to crush anything. Despair keeps me from ever being weak again…

Again?

Did all kinds of things to get food… to survive. In the end, still couldn’t protect anyone. Only now I see… never needed it… ha…

Interesting. So what exactly is the deal with the fasting? You always used to say you have no power without food.

I was stupid. Food makes you weak… sleepy, satisfied. Hunger keeps you focused. And that ache in the stomach hurts so nice…

What’s your role in things?

Point me at someone. They’re dead. A place. No one will feel safe. Crush the weak…

So you’re basically an attack dog.

An assassin.

An acrobatic assassin, huh? You sure, Akanine? Aren’t assassins supposed to be discrete? You leave craters every job you do.

Shut up.

Moving on. Where did you get that chain you always keep around your arm from?

Nekomaru. A gift. It’s useful… feels like coach is helping…

And where are your siblings?

Don’t know. Don’t care. I wonder if the runts better learned how to survive… without big sis doing all the work…

Harsh. I like it. Alright, last question. What would you do if I placed this nice, juicy burger here on the table…?

<The interview ended here. I had to clean up the remains of a smashed table and a destroyed burger splattered all over the walls. Psh. She could’ve just said ‘no thanks’. But it was worth it to snap a shot of her reaction… her eyes full of hunger, but her face sharp with rage and disgust.>
