Work Text:

Technoblade leaned against the wall, his head resting against the hard, obsidian wall. Dream sat across from him on the floor. Techno’s cape was discarded on the floor, too hot for either of them to wear it.

Dream sighed, his quill scratching against the paper quietly. He looked up at Techno, taking in the way that he seemed so relaxed when Dream’s mind was anything but.

His mind was flying, trying to process what had happened in the last hour. They summoned a god, then Techno - the absolute idiot according to Dream at this moment in time - used their one wish to get a fucking bell. They had given up trying to get out a while ago. They’d start trying to escape again later. For now Techno was just laying against the wall, staring at the bell off to the side. While Dream was- well Dream was just sitting, writing like always.

“I’m done.” Dream whispered. Standing up and pressing the book he was writing onto the lectern. He turned around, finding Techno’s eyes on him now.

“Write some good fanfiction?” Techno said, a small smile gracing his face.

Dream allowed a small laugh to escape, “You wish.” He took a deep breath, his shoulders shaking with the effort. His body hurt, trying to heal from all of the torture Quackity put him through. The lapse in torture allowed his body to finally start aching, the numbness slowly leaving as each day passed by. Sometimes the pain was unbearable, where he would just have to sit on the floor and wait until the pain stopped.

Today it was bearable. He was able to stand and move around, but his mind was screaming at him. He was done, not just with the book sitting on the lectern, but with the prison, with people, with Quackity. But with Techno? No, not Techno. Techno was actually slightly bearable, whenever he wasn’t ringing the stupid, annoying bell.

Dream could remember when they were younger, when they’d dance beneath the stars. Techno’s arm around his waist, Dream’s around his neck, and Dream’s hand laying in Techno’s extended to the side. Techno would hum for them as they swung around and around the battlefield they’d fought on.

“Dance with me?” Dream found himself saying. Techno looked at him, his brows furrowing slightly.

“Of course.” Techno said, stepping forward. Dream stepped forward as well, meeting him halfway. Techno’s arm wound itself around Dream’s waist, and Dream’s arm wrapped around Techno’s neck. Their arms extended, Dream’s hand laying in Techno’s.

Techno started humming, and in the middle of the hottest prison cell in the entire universe - they danced.

They swayed slowly, around and around the prison cell. Dream’s body ached, heavily leaning against Techno. His mind finally focused on one thought.

“Spin me.” Dream muttered, looking up at Techno.

“Are you sure?” Techno whispered back, “the cell’s pretty small Dream.” The words he didn’t say echoed in Dream’s head, You could run into the lava.

“Spin me.” Dream repeated, desperately wishing Techno could understand. Don’t catch me.

“If you’re sure.” Why not?

Techno let go of his waist, and Dream released his neck. Techno raised his hand, and Dream’s went with it. Dream stepped out, away from Techno, his face almost touching the lava. Dream spun, then extended his hand, leaning back. The only thing holding him back from falling into the lava behind was Technoblade’s warm hand clasped in his.

“Techno.” Let me go.

“Dream.” No.

“Techno.” Please.

“One more spin for the road?” I don’t want you to go just yet.

“Just one more.” Just let me go.

Techno spun him back towards him, so that Dream’s back was to his chest. They stayed there for a moment. Dream’s hand in Techno’s, the other lying to his side.

“Goodbye Dream.” Don’t leave me by myself.

“Goodbye Technoblade.” I’m so sorry.

And Dream spun, his feet carrying him away from Techno. He felt himself fall back, the lava wrapping itself around him. It felt warm, much different than he originally thought. He thought it would burn him, roast him alive, cause the most agonizing pain. Although he assumed that’s what was happening anyway, he’d just experienced much worse than this.

No to him, the lava felt like a warm embrace. Much like the one he was in a few moments ago. It eased his pain, his wounds starting to feel nonexistent. He felt at peace.

The last thing he felt was a warm hand leaving his.

Techno watched Dream fall, closing his eyes after Dream’s face disappeared into the lava, letting go of his hand. Techno sighed, waited a moment, then opened his eyes. He looked around the now empty cell, his eyes landing on the book, wide open on the lectern.

I would never leave you alone. Plus I liked your first plan better anyway. -Dream
