Work Text:
Three people were sitting on the roof of the Skephalo mansion. The sun was starting to set behind them and the breeze made its way through their hair. One was sitting on the right side of them all, it was Bad, he was happily humming along to another one of the random tunes he made up, his trident was lying peacefully beside him and his head was bobbing side to side as he took in this happy moment, no one was talking, but the silence wasn’t an awkward one either.
Right beside Bad sat Skeppy, who was also humming along to the beat Bad had made up, but unlike Bad, skeppy was also swinging his feet with a bright smile on his face, he was holding some diamonds in his hand and fiddling with them, which is something he had started doing subconsciously lately.
Last but not least was Puffy, who was sitting on the other side of Skeppy, she often hung out with her friends like this, the wind was blowing on her fluffy white hair and messing it up, it kept going in her face but she didn’t care, because she felt there was nothing that could ruin this moment. She had her pirate hat sitting on her lap as she had decided to take it off so that she could properly feel the wind passing through her hair.
They only managed to sit here in silence so long before Skeppy started feeling uneasy, he was not one that loved silence all that much, and he felt the need to break this silence. He didn’t know what to say, but all of a sudden the vines covering most of the server caught his attention and he blurted out the first thing that came to his head.
“Is it me or the egg?” he asked randomly, causing both Bad and Puffy to flinch, Puffy immediately knew what he was talking about and winced a little as she knew this situation might go horribly wrong, Bad on the other hand had no idea what Skeppy was implying and had to do a little double-take.
“What?” Bad asked in confusion as he cocked his head to the side, the only thing in his vision he was focusing on at the time was Skeppy who was trying to find a way to reword his sentence but eventually gave up.
“I said, is it me or the egg?” Skeppy repeated himself as he slightly dragged out the words as if to make sure Bad understood what he was asking.
“No, I heard you the first time, I just don’t understand what you’re asking,” Bad explained to Skeppy that he didn’t even know what the other was saying, Puffy then decided to try and clear up their situation.
“Bad, I think what Skeppy is asking is, if Skeppy and the egg were falling into a volcano, and you could only save one, who would you save?” Puffy tried to clear up the situation, adding in random motions to explain.
“I don’t think that would happen, therefore I do not have to answer,” Bad started getting defensive about the situation causing Skeppy to get hurt.
“No, but if it were to happen for whatever reason, who would you save?” Puffy once again asked, Skeppy was being way too silent in this all of a sudden.
“Well, that’s easy, I’d save both of them,” Bad tried to answer but Puffy sighed as she saw that Skeppy was refusing to look up now.
“But what if you could only save one?” Puffy pushed the question further and Bad seemed to start getting nervous.
“But I want to save both!” Bad started yelling defensively.
“But you can’t save both of them Bad, you can only save one!” Puffy also started raising her voice in order to be heard over Bad’s yelling.
“Ok fine, you want an answer? I’d save the egg! Happy now?” Bad yelled as an “in the moment” kind of thing, when he realized what he had said he covered his mouth quickly. Skeppy then looked up.
“Oh really?!” Skeppy questioned as his voice started rising. Bad tried to apologize for what he said.
“No Skeppy, that’s not what I meant,” Bad grabbed Skeppy’s shoulders while trying to apologize. Skeppy didn’t say anything to Bad, instead he spoke to Puffy.
“Puffy leave,” he muttered under his breath, Puffy barely heard and was clearly confused about what was happening.
“What-” she asked in a somewhat surprised tone of voice. Skeppy repeated himself one more time.
“Puffy, leave us alone,” he raised his voice higher than last time. Puffy started getting defensive.
“Why must I-” She tried to question but Skeppy cut her off.
“I said leave!” He yelled in a loud voice that made both Puffy and Bad flinch, Puffy didn’t get offended as she seemed to now understand that they needed to talk about this alone, she knew they both weren’t in the right headspace so she simply nodded her head softly and then used her trident to fly away. Once she was out of sight, Bad started trying to apologize again.
“Skeppy I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that,” Bad apologized in soft tone as to not make Skeppy even angrier than he already was, Skeppy didn’t speak for a few seconds, he seemed to be thinking if he should say what he was thinking, and eventually went with ‘yes’.
“You chose an egg over your own best friend?” he asked, there was clearly hurt in his voice and Bad seemed to know he had done wrong.
“Skep-” Bad tried to start but Skeppy immediately cut him off with words of his own.
“You chose a stupid egg that you’ve known for only one month, over your own best friend of years?!” Skeppy started raising his voice again, this caused Bad to start getting defensive again, this being a natural reaction of humans, when someone starts yelling, everyone starts yelling.
“Well if you wanted to ask such a stupid question you should’ve been ready for any answer!” Bad yelled as he got up off his feet.
“Well sorry! It’s my bad. I didn’t expect my best friend to choose an inanimate object over me!” Skeppy yelled as he too got up, maybe they shouldn’t have been getting so heated when they were both on top of a roof…
“At least this ‘inanimate object’ is doing more for me in one month than you have done in the years you’ve known me!”
“Oh right, cause what have I done for you?! Yeah according to you, nothing! You’re just going to forget all the times I’ve helped you?” Skeppy started lowering his voice as his anger started subsiding into hurt once again.
“You hurt me so many times with all of your stupid trolls!” Bad refused to lower his voice, this was all starting to agitate Skeppy.
“You know what, Bad? I’ve had enough, I’m not going to argue with you over this,” Skeppy tried to be the ‘bigger person’ and instead turned away while crossing his arms, Bad did something he would later come to regret.
“If you don’t want to argue then why don’t you just get out of here?!” Bad asked as he pushed Skeppy, it was meant to be only a warning, but Skeppy’s foot got caught on the floor, and he ended up tumbling over the roof as Bad watched with widened eyes, it all seemed to happen in slow motion, minutes of suspense seemed to pass before Skeppy finally hit the ground.
Skeppy has fallen from a high place
And with this Skeppy was left with only one remaining life…
***
It has been months since the previous incident happened, Skeppy has not tried to talk to Bad, and has even gone as far as to ignore the other’s attempts at talking to him. Whenever Bad would ask him questions he would only reply with a nod or a shake of the head, other than this he would never acknowledge the other’s existence, although Bad was upset at how the situation played out he knew he was the only one at fault. It was mostly fine for the first month too, although they did not talk Skeppy at least let him be near him, but at some point Skeppy started feeling fearful in Bad’s presence, the other reminding him of the night in which he lost another one of his lives, leaving him with only one remaining.
This intense fear of the past events eventually became too much for him, in the end he kicked Bad out of the house, he couldn’t even bear to look the other in the face when he was kicked, so instead he left a note for the other, while he did this he crashed at Tommy’s hotel for a few nights, he didn’t want to see if the other would get mad at him. On the fourth night of staying at the hotel, he decided he had been missing home for far too long, and Bad had already had enough time to move out, so he grabbed the few things he had brought with him and walked out.
On the way out he was met with Bad, the other just pushed past him, holding his head down low, he was trying to hide his face from Skeppy, but Skeppy could easily see the tears that were glistening on his face as the moonlight would hit them, Skeppy felt heartbroken at the sight, but the fear stopped him from even talking to the other, instead he gave one quick look, before he dropped his stuff and ran out of the hotel, going back home, without the thought of going back for his stuff ever crossing his mind.
The months past slower than before, and before he knew it Skeppy was seeing many posters around the place, they were advertising a supposed “red banquet” that would happen in the egg room, Skeppy would’ve went, but knowing that Bad would be there was enough to stop him, although it had been months since the incident had happened, he still didn’t think he was brave enough to face the other again.
Some of the nights that had passed since he kicked Bad out, Skeppy would spend them crying alone in his room, the choking sobs would break out through the night, and eventually he would have to try to force himself to stop, he would start running out of air, and that would cause him to panic, which would lead to worse things. Throughout this whole thing, no one ever checked on Skeppy, all his friends seemed to be busy with their own things. Puffy was busy protecting the children of the server, Bad was… well even if Bad wanted to check on him it would probably make things worse, but these are all more reasons that Skeppy would find himself crying himself to sleep at night, knowing he no longer had anyone to turn to. Some of the friends he had previously spent the most time with before, were now at constant battle with each other because of a stupid egg, a stupid egg that caused his own best freind of years to kill him.
Often nights, Skeppy would find himself taking walks outside, the moonlight would shine down on him as he looked around the server, every place he saw reminded him of his friends, his friends who he dearly missed but no longer saw. If anyone saw Skeppy now, it would be hard for them to believe this was once that person who would always laugh so sarcastically, because it had been so long since Skeppy had even cracked a smile on his face. But it was fine, he didn’t even have anyone he needed to crack a smile for. The only thing that would ever accompany him was the sound of the crickets chirping at night, and the view of the stars littering the sky in bunches, the night sky was beautiful, and it often managed to calm him. He would walk for hours on end, until he finally managed to get tired enough to know once he got home, he would actually be able to fall asleep for once.
It was on one of these nights, that Skeppy returned back home, he opened his door, in the routine way that he had come to accept as his daily life. His footsteps resonated through the empty house as he made his way over to the bed, his eyelids were drooping close even before he had gotten there, this causing him to knock out the moment he hit the bed. His eyelids closed heavily on themselves, as he entered dream world, dancing sheep filled his head as he laughed happily in his dream, he was dancing with them, this was one of the first happy dreams he had had in a while, usually they would consist of him reliving bitter sweet memories of the past.
Oh, but skeppy wasn’t a heavy sleeper, at least not since he started having to live alone, because now he needed to protect himself, he would often awake at night to hear the footsteps of mobs that had managed to sneak their way into his house, because of this he now slept with a sword next to his bed at all times. This was a good thing, because on this particular night, Skeppy heard those footsteps once more, his eyelids flew open as he grabbed his sword and steadily walked out into the mansion, he looked around and couldn’t find anything. He didn’t know what mob had made that noise, but he knew he had to find it, before it killed him in his sleep. He decided to look through all the floors of the house.
Each of these floors held different memories, memories Skeppy almost got distracted by, but as he realized this was happening he would shake his head and the thought would go on no longer. When he made it to the roof, he saw a figure sleeping right next to the Rat statue that lay looking out into the yard as if it was a bodyguard. Skeppy approached the figure carefully and used his foot to nudge it over, when he did the moon lit up the figure and he saw a face he hadn’t seen in months, it was Bad.
“Bad?” Skeppy asked the sleeping figure, as if it could actually answer him. Immediately once he said that Bad sprung up and pushed his sword to Skeppy’s neck, Skeppy’s breath hitched at his throat as he tried to calm himself from panicking. “What are you doing?” Skeppy tried to keep his voice at a low tone of voice, he didn’t think it’d be a good idea to upset someone who had a sword to his throat, he knew he also had a sword, but he couldn’t bring himself to hurt his former best friend, doing this would hurt him too much.
“You are with them!” Bad spoke out in a raspy voice… no, this wasn’t Bad, at least, it wasn’t the ‘Bad’ Skeppy had formerly called his ‘best friend’.
“Bad, come on, lower the sword, we can talk about this,” Skeppy chuckled nervously as he said the first full sentence he had said to Bad in months.
“You just want to leave me defenseless,” Bad once again accused in the same raspy voice as before. Skeppy thought Bad needed cough drops, but he wouldn't say this as the other would probably get offended.
“Is this the stupid egg thing again? C’mon Bad, just let me go, this isn’t your house anymore,” Skeppy glared at Bad who just glared right back, something that was so intimidating to Skeppy, that he felt multiple shivers run down his back, this caused Bad to chuckle mockingly.
“You are scared,” Bad mocked Skeppy for the involuntary reaction the other had shown.
“I’m not scared, just leave me alone!” Skeppy yelled a bit too loudly, this caused Bad to push the sword further, a trickle of blood flowed down Skeppy’s shirt, and he felt a little sting of pain coming from his neck as the sword slightly pierced through a layer of his skin.
“You will not be kicking me out,” Bad spoke through his teeth.
“You’re hurting me,” Skeppy yelled out. Bad chuckled.
“You think that’s true pain?” Bad questioned Skeppy, who was on the verge of tears from the pain he felt.
“It hurts!” Skeppy whined, hurt was laced all throughout his voice and Bad just rolled his eyes.
“It seems you want to feel pain so badly, I can help,” Bad grinned and started raising his sword, Skeppy’s eyes widened as he knew what was coming.
“No wait I’m sor-!” Skeppy was cut off as Bad brought the sword into Skeppy’s stomach, the sword stabbed through, immediately Skeppy felt blood gushing out and he fell down to the floor while clutching his stomach in pain. He started groaning as he kept his hands on the wound, trying to keep enough pressure to slow down the blood flow. “B-bad.” Skeppy spoke out, so many emotions were laced in that one word, this caused Bad to snap out of whatever phase he was in. Skeppy could see this as the other blinked furiously, he looked around trying to figure where he was at, when he saw that it was the mansion he tried to move forward only to feel his foot nudge into something, when he looked down, the scene in front of him was too horrific, it caused tears to pool in his eyes.
“Skeppy!” Bad yelled as he kneeled down and grabbed Skeppy who no longer cared about what had happened before, he needed comfort in his last moments of life. “Skeppy hold on!”
Bad removed Skeppy’s hands from the wound and replaced them with his own, Skeppy let his hands rest on top of Bad’s who was looking very guilty, he had a feeling he was the one who had done this.
“Bad, i-it hurts,” Skeppy felt a few more tears slip down from his face as his hands were shaking. His eyelids were feeling heavy and he wanted so badly to just close them once and for all.
“Skeppy don’t close your eyes, please hold on,” Bad begged Skeppy to keep himself in consciousness, but Skeppy was far too gone to do this.
“Bad, I’m sorry,” Skeppy muttered out these last few words as his eyes closed in on themselves, Bad grabbed Skeppy’s shoulders in a panic and tried to force him awake.
“Skeppy! Open your eyes!” Bad yelled out but nothing he tried worked, he no longer heard any breaths coming from his friend, and Skeppy’s skin was getting very cold under his touch. Bad didn’t know what else he could do, so he just stood there with Skeppy’s lifeless body in his arms as tears streaked down his face.
“Skeppy, Skeppy I’m sorry!”
