So Amazing Here

Saxa leaves Jutulheim and hides out in Magne’s room after her attack at the hands of Fjor and Ran.

It was nine-thirty on a Saturday night, Magne was listening to music at his desk as he watched Saxa sleep. She had been at his home for over a week, she had left home the night that she was attacked by her so-called brother and mother. No one knew that she was in hiding at his house. Despite being a formattable warrior, the attack had shaken Saxa’s self-confidence. She was no longer the arrogant young woman that she was weeks ago, now she was a frightened teen girl who needed to be protected. Magne never figured that he would ever see himself protecting Saxa, days before she and her family had wanted him dead. She had tried to attack him and take his hammer Mjollnir from him at Jutulheim, she had almost succeeded if passion had not overcome the both of them. They were sworn enemies from the old world one minute and the next they were both naked and making love in the hallway at her house. Magne shook his head, he couldn’t figure that one out either.

Magne was glad that Saxa had finally been able to sleep, the first couple of nights she had been afraid to go to sleep, he held her in his arms as she cried and told him that she thought Fjor and Ran would find her and kill her. He remembered the night that she had packed a few of her belongings and came home with him. She had been beaten pretty badly, he was afraid that she had some broken bones, some of her front teeth were loose, she had bruises everywhere and she had two bad cuts on her forehead. Magne patched her up as best as he could. Saxa had thanked him with tears in her eyes. Magne told her that he would protect her and he would not allow anything to happen to her. The two of them slept in his tiny bed. He didn’t ask her to have sex with him again, that wasn’t a requirement for her to stay with him, he genuinely wanted her to know that she was safe, he didn’t put stipulations on her staying with him. After she had started feeling better, she decided to have sex with Magne. He liked being with Saxa in that way, they usually made love several times a day, most days the couple were exhausted, they were glad that school had ended. Magne laughed as he thought about his trips to the pharmacy in the past to pick up condoms, he usually picked them up for his friends never in his wildest dreams did he ever figure that he would need them. He was glad that Turid was either at work or at Eric’s house most of the time now.

The couple were both worried that Laurits would find out that she was staying there. Laurits came home last Sunday morning and told Magne and Turid that he was moving out, he was renting a room in town. He moved the last of his belongings on Thursday afternoon after his last exam, no one had seen him since. Saxa said that Laurits had probably blackmailed some money out of Ran and Fjor who were to eager to keep Laurits at arm’s distance. Magne could only hope that Ran and Fjor did not kill Laurits for his betrayal. If Saxa’s beating was any indication of their violence, Lauritis could be in deep trouble.

Saxa lay on her side facing the wall, she was in Magne’s small room at his house. She couldn’t believe that she had walked away from the only life that she had ever known for over one thousand years. She had nothing now except what she had walked away from Jutulheim with. Magne helped her pack her bags and she walked away from Jutulheim holding Magne’s hand. She walked to his house, she couldn’t believe anyone could live in a place like this, the neighborhood looked like it was twenty-five years behind times. She walked into the house behind him. The house was very small and in dire need of repair. It was apparent Turid was doing what she could to make the house livable. Laurits often complained about Turid, Magne and the condition of the house. Saxa had thought that Laurits had been exaggerating, he wasn’t. Saxa reasoned that it wasn’t the mansion that she was accustomed to, but she was safe. The little house was always kept clean and neat. Most nights they couldn’t afford to eat an expensive meal, but they always had enough, she remembered how Magne had to sneak food to her after Turid had went to bed. Magne did odd jobs for many of their neighbors and he made pretty good money which he gave to Turid to make her help ends meet.

Saxa realized that the little house unlike Jutulheim was a home and not just a residence. Magne and his mother didn’t have much as far as material wealth, but they had each other, they were a true family who loved each other unconditionally. There was love to be found in the walls of this little house, Saxa realized what she had been missing for so many years and Magne had helped her find it. Saxa had enjoyed this past week at his house and living with him in his room. She rolled over onto her back with a small smile on her face, it was so amazing here! What she felt right now she knew that she never wanted to lose. She was willing to fight with everything she had to feel this way forever. Saxa didn’t know how Magne felt about her, but then again she did. He would never have helped her if didn’t feel something for her. She knew how she felt about Magne, she was falling in love with him, she could she herself standing by his side in the future, he would need help making things right here in Edda again. Ran and Fjor would no longer have her as an ally. Saxa hoped that Laurits would realize that family was more important that wealth, that the unconditional love of a family was true wealth.

Laurits didn’t know which side that he was on. He only played both sides to his advantage, oh well whatever worked for him. Saxa didn’t care anymore, she had made her mind up and she had decided not to go back home again. Magne told her earlier in the day that Laurits had told him that Ran and Fjor were still looking for her, they think that she might have left the country and had went to Iceland like she had back in the early 1900s when she gotten mad with the family. She had gone back to the family weeks later because she knew that she could not survive without them, they had told her as much. Now she knew differently. Saxa knew now with the right people supporting her that she could make it in this new world.

Saxa rolled over on her side, she looked at Magne he was listening to Frou Frou’s Let Go on his telephone. She was still sleepy, she stretched and got up to sit on the edge of the bed. He smiled at her, she reached out for his hand.
“Did you sleep okay?” she nodded yes.
“Mom brought me something from the Edda Grille, I told her bring me two regular burgers, I didn’t order two fries and two sodas because…”
“Yeah, I know, we can share, I don’t mind.” Magne pulled out two cups from a plastic bag his dresser drawer. He poured the giant cup of soda into two different cups. Saxa took the burgers and fries out of the bag.
“Is your mom still here?”

“No she went back to Eric’s house, I guess she is his “grief counselor”. The couple laughed.
“Did you think about what I told you earlier, you can stay here for as long as you like, I don’t think mom suspects anything. She hardly ever comes into my room now since she knows that I keep my room clean.”
“Yes, with my help.” Laughed Saxa.
“I will be working some odd jobs this summer, they will keep me out of the house until late in the evening, Mom’s day off from SPAR is Thursday, you will have to stay hidden just in case Mom comes up here or Laurits stops by.”
“Magne, I can’t stay here forever, I will be putting you and your mom in danger and I don’t want to do that. I appreciate what you have done, I probably wouldn’t be alive right now if you were not there that night. I don’t what I can do next, but I will eventually have to move on Magne.”
“I don’t think that Fjor and Ran will try to do anything to you even if they knew that you were over here, they really don’t want that type of attention right now. Oskar texted earlier, he said that no one has seen you, Fjor or Ran. He said that people are speculating that you guys left town.” Saxa nodded as she continued to eat. A flash of lightening passed the window, there was a storm coming in more ways than one. Saxa found herself in the middle of it all. She knew that she would have to fight, not only for herself and Magne, but the people in Edda too. Saxa hoped Magne knew that she had meant what she said she wanted to be apart of Edda’s future. She looked over at Magne.

“Magne, I plan to go to Jutul Monday and meet with Fjor and Ran, I want to tell them that I want my rightful place in the company or I want out of Jutul entirely.”
“Saxa they would never let you just walk away from the company, you already know that.”
“I also know that being pushed to the side is getting me nowhere either. If I stay quiet and complacent, that Vidarclone Fjor will keep doing the same messed up things that Vidar did and I don’t want to see that, especially with everything you and so many more have done. All of this could be a turning point for this town and Jutul. Magne we finally have a chance to make things right. I am going up there first thing Monday morning. I didn’t know what I was going to do before, but I know now.” Said Saxa in a resolute manner as she finished her fries. Magne gave her a stern look.
“I will go with you on Monday morning. I don’t want you going up there alone.”
“Are you going to bring Mjollnir with us?” They both laughed.
“Maybe so. Take it up there and crack a few giant heads!” Magne laughed. The couple finished their meal and Magne took the bags downstairs, he rushed upstairs again back to his room.

“Your telephone notification went off while you were downstairs.” Magne picked the phone up.
“Mom was just checking in with me, she said that she would be home at one o’clock tonight. We can go downstairs and watch television if you want to or we can just stay up here and listen to music, read or play cards.” Saxa shook her head.
“Can we just sit and talk, I can relax when I am talking to you.” Magne smiled. He pushed his chair back to his desk and sat down beside Saxa on his bed. The couple sat with their backs against the wall and discussed the upcoming plans that they had planned for Monday morning. They hoped that Fjor and Ran were ready for the two of them. Magne looked over at Saxa.
“No matter what happens on Monday, I want us to continue to be a couple, I can definitely see you being my girl.” Saxa grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
“What about that girl Signy, I thought that she was your girl, I have heard things about the two of you.” Inquired Saxa.
“I think that she is into Rasmus more than me, every time I go to the park or to the Edda Grille, she is sitting beside him. Besides, the two of us have more in common.” Said Magne as he looked at Saxa. He reached over to turn on the radio, the volume was turned down low. The couple sat side by side on the bed holding hands and talking about the battle that lay before them.
