“Low-key, no pressure! Just hang with me and my weather!”
Jay sighed dreamily as he looked at the stage. He had decided to swing by Nya and both his own and her friend’s concert. He wasn’t sure if you could really call a small group of teens preforming in a garage a concert but he didn’t really care.
Despite the fact that his crush was singing, he actually really liked the song. Very upbeat and energetic.
That’s when he began listening to the lyrics. He knew it was unlikely but a tiny part of him was thinking she was singing about him.
As soon as the concert ended, he walked up to Nya smiling.
“Hey!” He smiled, butterflies going absolutely nuts in his stomach.
“Oh hey, Jay!” Nya grinned as she began packing the equipment up.
“So Uhm, I really liked one of your songs, Rose Colored Boy?”
“Oh, you have to thank Cole for that. He was the one who wrote it.” Nya chuckled as he gestured to Cole, who was the drummer, as he was moving the kit into Kai’s car.
Jay blinked, he froze but only for a second.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, that man’s real good, isn’t he?”
“Y-Yeah.”
“Well, it was lovely seeing ya but my brother wants some help packing stuff up. I’ll see ya around!” Nya smiled as she carried the speakers over to Kai’s car.
Jay was so confused. He probably couldn’t be more confused even I feel he tried. Kai could see the gears turning in the boy’s head, he chuckled as he walked over.
“For once you’re quiet, what gives?” Kai asked, curiously.
“Nya said that Cole wrote one of the songs, I just-“
“Oh, Rose Colored Boy? You disappointed it wasn’t Nya singing about you?” Kai teased.
“I mean- I wasn’t expecting it but like, it was a nice thou-“
“While it wasn’t Nya singing about you, it definitely was about you.”
That just confused Jay even more.
“What??”
“Cole wrote the song about me???” Jay blinked.
“If his constant blabbering about how amazing you are is anything to go by, it’s totally about you.” Kai chuckled.
Jay paused.
“... Probably shouldn’t of said that.” Kai whispered before he walked off, quickly as he left Jay with his thoughts.
Jay stared at the floor, deep in thought. He had no idea how to feel about this. He found his feet slowly wandering off, back to his small house.
He greeted his parents but his head was somewhere else.
He slowly laid down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He was so confused...
He spent the rest of the day re-thinking everything. What should he even do? He was just completely lost. His best friend has a crush on him. How are you even supposed to feel about that? Jay knows he’s not angry or upset. That would just be stupid.
There’s only two people who understand what’s going on.
He opened his phone and scrolled through his contacts before he tapped on Kai and began phoning his friend.
“What’s up, Sparky?” Kai’s voice rang out from his phone.
“Hey, Kai... Uh, can I ask you something?” Jay asked, uncertainly.
“Of course!”
“Yeah uh... How did you feel when you found out Zane had a crush on you?”
“Oh well, uh... I don’t really know, to be honest? I’m not good at processing my emotions, you know this! Why are you asking anyways??”
“Well, I just... I don’t know how to feel about Cole liking me so I wanted to ask someone with experience. Zane would just tell me... I don’t know. I just... I have no idea what to feel. I was so deadset on Nya that I never even thought of someone else liking me.”
“Well, your chances with Nya was always 0 and I know that for a fact.”
“Gee, thanks for that.”
“... Because she has 2 girlfriends.”
Jay blinked. He felt like even more of an idiot...
“Oh.”
“You really are oblivious.” Kai rolled his eyes.
Jay was about to answer but then Kai cut him off.
“Oh boy, speak of the devil, Cole is calling me now. Please hold.” Kai Said before he answered Cole.
“Holy shit, I’m so gay.” Cole’s voice rang out.
“Yeah, no shit Sherlock. What’s up?”
“Jay has no business being that adorable. Did you see his face when we were preforming?? He looked so excited and- aghhh! I just feel like I’m gonna explode.”
Jay went bright red, blinking. Well he now knew for a fact that Cole liked him.
“Well funny you should say that-“ Kai chuckled.
“Please don’t tell me Jay is with you-“
“Nah, even better, he’s on the other line. Say hello Ja-“
Kai was cut off by screaming coming from Jay.
Kai blinked.
“You good there, buddy?”
“I CAME HERE FOR ADVICE, NOT FOR ME TO BECOME EVEN MORE FLUSTERED AND CONFUSED!” Jay yelled into the phone.
“... Shit.” Cole muttered.
Kai laughed.
“Oh boy, this is absolutely hilarious. I’m just gonna go leave you two then... Have fun.” Kai then promptly hung up.
The two boys left in the call stayed silent.
“Sooooo-“
Oh boy. This was utterly awkward and it was in the worst way possible.
“I uh, I like you if that wasn’t obvious already-“ Cole said.
Why did Jay have butterflies in his stomach?
“I just... I think you’re really cool. Yeah you can be annoying as fuck sometimes but it’s endearing. Like a... puppy? Wait no, that’s weird-“
Jay couldn’t help but chuckle a little.
“I uh, I’m sorry. You probably think I’m a weirdo or something... I just really, really like you, Jay. You’re my best friend and I wouldn’t give that up for anything in the world but my god, the amount of times I have to restrain myself from holding your hand is absolutely insane.”
This time, Jay laughed.
“Holding my hand? Oh my Lord, you’re more sappier than I thought!”
“Heyyy! It’s not my fault you’re like, unfairly adorable. I haven’t even said what I like about you as in personality yet-“
“You don’t have to, I can sorta get the idea.” Jay smiled to himself.
“Sooo... Do you feel the same way? It’s fine if ya don’t, I just wanted to ask anyways.”
Jay thought for a moment. Did he? This entire interaction just brought an entire new level to their friendship. He didn’t know if it was love yet but... He couldn’t deny his curiousness about how it could go. All he knew was he felt something towards Cole. He didn’t know what it was but it definitely wasn’t platonic, not anymore anyways.
“Yeah.” Jay said after a few moments.
He could hear Cole cough and splutter from the other line.
“Wait, really??”
“I don’t know what it is but.. I feel something towards you. It’s not platonic, that’s all I know. I want to figure out what it is.”
Cole beamed.
———————————
Jay did figure out what he felt for Cole. It was love. Complete and undying love. He wasn’t so sure at first but as time passed, he finally figured it out. He loved Cole. He loved Cole.
