The night is theirs
Backs pressed to grass
Wet and uncaring
In their isolated spot
Of darkness and quiet
Where they can be themselves
For once
Be together
Without the pressures of
The ever-present
Them
They laugh
And their voices carry
In the summer wind
But no one
Is around to hear
They reach up
As if they can
Touch the stars
If only their arms
Were long enough
The sky is
Just as much theirs
As the night is
They talk in whispers
Telling each other
Secrets
Meant for no one else
Not even the wind
That likes to carry voices
The stars become them
Bathed, as they are,
In moonlight
In starlight
They glow
Just as much
From the inside
As from any illumination
The sky could bestow
They point to the heavens
Tracing out constellations
And the legends behind them
They map out new patterns
And name them for
Each
Other
They remember how
Their first date
Was in a spot like this
Grass for days
And set apart
How awkward it was
And how sweet
How their first kiss
Was the same
Awkward and sweet
But they’ve gotten
The hang of it by now
And they practice still
Kissing long into the night
Under summer stars
As if the world
Was theirs
