Work Text:
Game night had finished winding down, the last of their friends had just left, and Lena found herself hovering in Kara's living room, not yet ready to leave. Kara's music had been playing softly in the background for the majority of the night as the Superfriends laughed and talked over well loved game board. It had all but blended into the ambience of the apartment and Lena barely noticed it anymore but in the silence left by everyone's absence the new song came through clear as day.
"if I was a flower growing wild and free all I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee and if I was a tree growing tall and green all I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves"
The line was sweet, but innocuous enough for Lena to simply ignore, yet at the introduction Kara's head shot up from where she had been reaching to grab the stack of games and she smiled. She stood straight and reached a hand out to Lena, pulling her to a clear patch of floor just in time for peppy harmonica notes to sound off.
Kara's big toothy smile fit the sound perfectly, it was sunny and sweet and filled her chest with something she couldn't quite put words to.
"Dance with me?"
"You know I'm not a dancer, Kara"
"You dont have to be, you can just follow me"
Lena nodded along, smiling wide as Kara's linked their hands and began bouncing back and forth on the balls of her feet, pulling Lena's arms along with her, gently tugging right then left, right then left.
The previous line repeated over the strumming of an acoustic guitar and Kara bounced them in little circles around the room, rosey cheeked and unabashed.
They laughed along to the song, dancing little circles for a moment before Kara decided to sing along.
She began rocking them back and forth, sweeping their arms in grand arcs and calling out "all i want is you would you stay with me? hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea"
Once more the harmonica picked up and Kara danced them around some more, silly and carefree, swept up in the cheesy song that played, but Lena couldn't help but answer to herself. Yes, of course, I'll stay with you, as long as you want.
The song continued on making cute metaphors as Kara happily took them around the kitchen island, and in the low light cast from the living room a halo seemed to glow in her fly away hairs. She was gorgeous like this, the weight her eyes always seemed to hold was gone, there was no dead planet, no secret identity, no moral struggle, no multiverse, they brimmed with happiness and love with no restraint.
Lena had long ago identified that shine in Kara's eyes, she saw it here and there, with Alex and the others but when she saw it head on, when she looked straight in Kara's eyes at it, it looked different. It was a different shine she couldn't explain and she dared not examine, for fear of what it may mean.
But that thought was washed away as Kara wrapped her arms around her waist, spinning her quickly, singing again, "If you were the wood, I'd be the fire. If you were the love, I'd be the desire. If you were a castle, I'd be your moat. And if you were an ocean, I'd learn to float"
Her feet met the ground again as the verse ended and Kara danced on her own through the final play of the chorus, and Lena's heart swelled, protesting against the sweetness of the sight. Kara rounded on her, holding her hands out and singing the closing lines directly to Lena, who just stood smiling softly at her as the harmonica faded out.
They were both breathing a little too hard from the bout of dancing and stood watching each other until Kara grew visibly nervous, she pulled her feet close together, opening her mouth, probably to ask Lena what was wrong, but never got the chance as Lena stepped well into Kara's space.
What she was about to do was reckless, it was dangerous, maybe even downright idiotic, but she was still riding the emotional high Kara left buzzing in her veins and it felt right.
"Can i kiss you?" Lena barely breathed the question out and she tried to quell the panic that rose at the sight of Kara's eyes going wide.
It only dispelled when Kara leaned in whispering a hushed, "please" over Lena's lips before they crashed together.
When they broke apart Kara sighed and rested her chin on Lena's shoulder, arms draped over her hips, Lena felt her smile against her neck before she giggled and rocked them gently, mumbling softly into her hair, "hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea"
Lena smiled and clung tighter, practically drafting vows around the lyric where they stood.
