Chapter Text
The dim light the candles offered Kenma loomed across his oversized desk. Instruments rolled from side to side, in time with the rocking of the waves that crashed up against the ship. It didn’t take the distant booms for him to tell there was a storm coming. He could smell it in the air, an ominous scent that promised destruction. The Captain scanned the curving map laid out in front of him, its yellowing and torn surface littered with chess pieces of varying colors. Kenma had to grip the sides of his chair to keep from fidgeting with his carefully arranged sets. After all this time, after all of his efforts, the ever-moving parts of a plot more complex than any other he had attempted were finally starting to fall. His cropped locks swayed gently around his face as the door to his cabin swung open.
“What is it.” He didn’t look up as the sound of boots on the old hardwood came closer.
“Didn’t mean to interrupt, captain. Yaku said to come and get you as soon as possible.” Kai glanced down at Kenma, “He saw land up ahead.” He hovered in the doorway, waiting for his friend to stand. Kenma rose to his feet. He stood still for a moment, trying to regain his composure. It was happening. It was actually happening .
He looked up, steely eyes boring into Kai. “Show me.”
Kai grinned at the smaller man, “Will do, Cap.”
The inky night sky opened up to Kenma as he followed Kai to the upper deck where Yaku stood, gripping the wheel with an iron fist. He sucked in a breath of salty air, tilting his chin up slightly. The dull stars scattered across the black canvas seemed to stare at him. Like they could see through him, and study the heinous plot growing inside his mind. It was the perfect night to break the law.
“Ready the ship for a quick run. We won’t be staying long.” The crew quickly departed across the deck, eager to do their tasks. The land ahead crept closer with every passing second.
Kenma made his way to the front of the ship and pulled out a polished piece of wood from the depths of his pocket. The black rook swirled between his slim fingers. “I found you,” He smiled, the same cunning turn of his lips that never failed to send a rush of excitement through his crew. The same grin that could only be described as wicked. “And you’re not getting away this time”
